Playstation The Official Playstation 5 Thread

My two cents on the FPP vs TPP debate:

Eh, I guess it depends if your FPP experience comes from consoles. AFAIK, there's no FOV option in many games and that includes for TPP. That's the reason I haven't touched HZD on my PS4 for more than an hour or two because the camera is too close to the character thus giving me limited vision. I could also give literally the same reason that anti-FPP folks give... I'm looking forward to the PC version because at least it comes with an FOV slider.

I saw there's a similar option in TLoU2, but I've seen some comparisons and even with the FOV slider, the camera is still too close to the characters.

Here are two screenshots I took when I played A Plague Tale: Innocence on PC. One has the default FOV (60-80 degrees), the other with a field of around 115-120 degrees. Difference is night and day and I had a much better experience with the latter.

Maybe if developers gave more accessibility options on consoles, including FOV, then your FPP experience would be quite different. Or maybe not, if we take TLoU2 and how the FOV didn't change much...

But I grew up with PC and FPS, so I guess my experience has been more positive and ingrained in me especially since mouse aiming feels more natural compared to joystick (less prone to motion sickness). :oldrazz:

I'm not sure why Xbox has to do these livestreams every 1 to 2 months. I understand they are promoting things and there's an upcoming console. But these "hyped" livestreams are more like a letdown (unless you are a big Xbox fan and really into first person games). I also doubt its helping the sales/interest for the indie or smaller games as the bigger games tend to overshadow them.1/3 of the livestream was for Halo which didn't even look graphically great. While the big games, could just host their own livestream. The only improvement I noticed from the Xbox's July livestream was the guest speakers weren't directly talking infront of their webcam unlike in the previous Livestream.

As for Sony, they don't also need to do bi-monthly live streams unless they have something big to reveal and they did reveal Horizon 2, Village, Miles Morales, Hitman 3, Bluepoint's next remake game, Rachet & Clank, Ragdoll, Gran Turismo, a couple of new ips and the look of their new console. And most of those games didn't merely play a 30 second teaser.

Not only Sony has the momentum from the ps4, but they are also really playing their cards better than Xbox for their upcoming console. I eXpect the next livestreamfrom Sony to reveal its launch date/price. I don't eXpect Sony to further reveal new games, but can you imagine if God of War vs God of Thunder and GTA VIce City are announced for their next livestream. The internet would eXplode in eXcitement.
The Xbox July event was definitely more "professionally" done than the May event.

I still expect both Sony and MS to reveal new games. Both companies have pretty much said they've got more to show. Whether or not they reveal anything in August remains to be seen, but I do expect future shows/events from both. The next shows, however, don't have to be as grand or long as the July Xbox and June Sony events. I'd expect more in line with the State of Play and Inside Xbox type events.

For August, I think the focus for both companies will be on hardware, price, reveal date, and launch titles. It's time to start locking that info down to get ready for the preorders. These consoles are coming out in 3-4 months, so it's time to start discussing specifics like prices and dates.

For Sony especially, they need to talk more about the console, since they have revealed less than MS has. One area in particular that Sony needs to expand upon and clarify is the issue of PS4 BC (and if other gens will be BC as a surprise announcement). The extent of the PS4 BC, especially at launch, is a KEY piece of info to me. I want to know how much of my PS4 library and backlog will carry over to the PS5.

yeah, it would be nice if devs gave us more control over the camera angle. even with some 3rd person games, I get disoriented because of the camera movement.

and yeah, everyone has different tastes and experiences with what they're used to playing. I was never much of a PC player, so I didn't grow up playing FPS games or mouse/keyboard games or MMOs like World of Warcraft. So stuff like that doesn't really appeal to me.

My first memory of playing a FPS game was probably Doom on the Sega 32X. The N64 had some FPS games like Doom, Turok, and even a FPS Star Wars game (Shadow something?). But even on the consoles, I never got into FPS games much. So, that's why I'm not that into Call of Duty or things like Overwatch or Destiny.

I never owned the OG Xbox, so I don't have memories of playing Halo or going online for multiplayer matches with Xbox Live fans. That's why I'm not really a big Halo fan or into multiplayer in general.

I've always been about the single player experience. Which is why Sony's focus on single player experiences through their games appeals to me more.

I feel like more studios should feature an option to switch between 1st person and 3rd person, especially the big games. Like I look at GTA V and RDR2, big open world games, and I was wowed they were able to do that.

Thats why I'm still annoyed that another numbered Resident Evil Game is in first person perspective. And a Resident Evil game is much smaller than GTA/RDR and RE Engine by Capcom has one of the best looking graphics atm, they could at least give us an option with the camera perspective.

With first person I can’t get connected to the character. I always feel like the game could turn around at the end and say we got you, you were controlling some random idiot instead of the main hero character. Having both is definitely ideal for me. I like switching between the 2 a lot for variety, although 3rd person will always be my favourite.

The only FPS I've played on consoles were GoldenEye and Perfect Dark on the N64.

Multiplayer can be fun, especially if you play with friends. Sure playing by yourself in a match against players that are in a competitive mood can be brutal because of toxicity. I find it sad that developers no longer support LAN (PC) or hosting your own private servers nowadays...

Yeah thats why I have no connection with Ethan from Re7 whatsoever.

I like switching to FP to see the details more of the graphics/environment and when I'm using a sniper rifle. But when I'm using the character to explore places and run through things, I prefer if I see their body movement and I like the option in which I could do a 360 camera turn and see the character's face.

I think 1st person can enhance the immersion and connection to the character if you are controlling a custom, created character. IOW, you're "own" character. In that case, 1st person can make it feel like you are seeing the game world through the eyes of your created character. And for "role playing" purposes, you can control the camera to make the character "react" how you'd want your character to react in the situation.

For example, in Skyrim, I remember there were instances where some activity is happening in town (like the executions in the beginning of the game). If I'm role playing a character who doesn't really like the violence or bloodshed, I can use the 1st person camera to "look away" at the moment of the execution because that's how I'd imagine my character to react or behave in the situation. So, I can use the 1st person viewpoint to "impart" personality to my created character.

However, this doesn't really work, imo, when you're playing a preset protagonist with established behavior traits and personality. So, in this case, I agree that 1st person makes you feel less connected to the preset character because you don't really see much of the character as you're playing through the game.

1st person is fitting for VR. Too bad, I don't think its advisable to play using a VR headset for more than 30 minutes straight

As for customed made playable characters, I don't think I would enjoy it if I can't really see all the customizations I did for the character because the game is a FP game. The fun of the third person perspective, is you can see the customizations you've done for the character or the vehicle. Like for example, in AC/Horizon/Spider-man, I always try every costume/look, not just for their stats but for the design as well. I don't think I would care to try every costume, if the game is mostly in 1st person.

oh yeah. that's the downside to 1st person with custom characters.

you spend all that time creating the character and getting the look right (often spending more time in character creator than the actual game.....lol) but then you don't get to see the character much in the game due to 1st person. and then, like you said, all the costumes and looks you can equip, you don't really get to see that either.

A new silent Hill is rumored to come out in ps5. I'm not interested in playing that but I guess that would be another big title for the ps5.

Ha, oh well sometimes it’s just fun to customise anyway

I always find this kind of talk quite ironic, for a lack of words. I can give the real-life analogy (wearing a t-shirt with an awesome print on the back) for example... I wonder if people are also that vain in such scenario?

I don't have any issues with games forcing a single perspective, whether FPP or TPP, when I play a customizable or pre-made character. Do I like to customize my character? Hell yeah. Will I be mad if the game is in FPP only? Never. Sometimes, it's because of resources (lack of talent or time to implement animation) or because of the game design (taking advantage of verticality like in Cyberpunk 2077).

I will definitely spend a lot of time on the creation screen in that game and enjoy every minute of it, but I'm totally not bummed out that it's in FPP only. I say this as someone who spent thousand of hours in MMORPGs and enjoyed customizing his male and female characters from buying cosmetics to dyeing every armor sets that I owned.

PS5 gets its first fighting game. Guilty Gear Strive confirmed for PS5 in addition to the already announced PS4 version!

I think that makes it the first confirmed fighter on a next-gen system. And, with this game planned for early 2021, that gives me more incentive to pick up a PS5 this Holiday, as I definitely want to play the PS5 version.

So, I finally have my 1st "must-have" exclusive game for the PS5.

Guilty Gear Strive is coming to PS5 alongside PS4 in early 2021, Leo Whitefang revealed - Final Weapon.

Well other people would actually see or notice the design in the back of your tshirt when you go out. Who will really see or care the customizations to the character you are using if its a first person game? Npcs? So see, its not the same.

In online games/modes I can totally understand since hundreds if not thousands of players can see and compliment your character.

In SP games, it just not as meaningful I suppose.

Playstation have a generation of great titles behind them so they have many big reveals for the PS5.

Xbox mostly ****ed about this generation, spawning nothing new and harming their established brands. What do they have ahead really? Another Crackdown? Ha. I will give them credit for really going in on great hardware and the gamepass which sounds like a pretty good deal. They completely failed on exclusive games. The One X launching with a crappy platformer is a joke.

For you though, its not meaningful.

But for me and a lot of people, wearing different outfits/customizing the look of the playable character add a lot to the gaming eXperience. Grand Theft Auto, Spider-Man 2018, Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War 2018, Hitman, a dozen of Assassin's Creed games, Watch Dogs, Red Dead Redemption and the game I have yet to play Ghost of Tsushima has lots of cool costumes/gears.

New State of Play this Thursday, August 6 at 4:00 PM Eastern.

State of Play returns this Thursday, August 6

However, temper your expectations. Looks like the focus will be on 3rd party PS4 and PSVR titles as well as updates on some 3rd party and indie PS5 titles shown in the June event. There will be NO 1st party studio stuff, hardware, pricing, etc. The show looks to be around 40+ minutes.

TBH, I'm a little disappointed by this. But at least they are setting the expectations before hand. Hopefully, they will have another event in August that's dedicated exclusively to PS5 stuff, including price, release date, pre-orders, and BC. It's time to start talking about that.

If this upcoming State of Play is focused on upcoming 3rd party PS4 games, hopefully we get updates on games like Babylon's Falls and Granblue Fantasy that were announced previously but have since dropped off the radar.

I'm also assuming that the PS4 stuff shown in this SOP will BC on the PS5, so technically, it still will be covering games that I can expect to play on my PS5 in the future.....lol.

I cant wait to see if they are gonna reveal new games again like they did with Resident Evil and Hitman.

I'm disappointed about the no price reveal/launch date, we are now in August. With plenty of games already scheduled for the 4th quarter of 2020, with an eXact date, they should have revealed a launch date for their new console by now. I'm wondering if the pandemic has something to do with it. Assassin's Creed is out in the third weekof November for the ps4 and there are like only 6 weeks left in 2020 after that. And they should really be accepting pre orders now for the ps5 and Miles Morales by now.

The possible upside to this SOP being dedicated mainly to 3rd party PS4/VR games is that means Sony can dedicate future events or press releases just on the PS5 hardware, price, and next-gen games.

So, get the last wave of PS4 games "out of the way" in this SOP, and then talk more about PS5 stuff in a dedicated event later on in the month.

I do feel like, from both companies, pricing, release date, and launch lineup need to be addressed before month's end. Both retailers and us consumers need to have at least that info in order to preorder the consoles.

It is silly that Sony doesn't want to reveal the prices. It's like they absolutely must do so after Microsoft...

Oh well, it won't matter much. Sony could reveal the prices and open the pre-orders one week before the release date and the PS5 would still sell like hotcakes.

well, Sony waiting for MS to reveal the X1 price first, then undercutting that with the $100 cheaper PS4, played a part in securing the early momentum and victory for the PS4 at the start of this gen.

So, I suspect both companies this time around are waiting for the other company to move first so that they can come in and announce their console as the cheaper one to score that price advantage. However, at this late in the game, the cat-mouse game Sony and MS are playing is getting tiresome, as is this "drip, drip, drip" of info.

Even if the PS5 is the more expensive console, their current momentum and goodwill will probably be enough to overcome that. However, given that the PS5 is technically weaker spec-wise, it still wouldn't look good if it ends up being more expensive than the Series X.

I don't think either company wants to bear the stigma of having the more expensive console, so that's why we are stuck in this waiting game.

I am tried of all of these price/ lack of news annoying to. In the past you would normal get 2 big shows to show a new console like a e3 annoucment and 1 other thing or something. With ps5 we had a wired article back in like April 2019, got a box art shown on a different day, got the June event, got the thing about the controllers and headphones and such today, we got another thing i think late last year, got the specs thing in was it march this year i dont remember? So like how many ways do they need to split up news darn it. Just give us news. I just hate the way things have been marketed.
