I think the future is that there will be those that PS5 will be their first system and they're completely fine with an all-digital console, regardless of its drawbacks and not physically owning the media.I'm sure it will too, but I only own three digital games on PS4 compared to over 20 games on disc for the system.
If the older generations wants to continue to play their PS4 games with the new console, that's probably going to be the new "optional" way of continuing that tradition. Otherwise, they can say, "just don't throw your ps4 away..." and buy the strictly digital version, if the cost is too much for consumers.
It's sort of this hybrid Nintendo and Xbox approach. The risk though is that more people will buy the All-Digital version and Sony will be sitting on some expensive ultra blu-ray players and will take a loss because of it... or they'll leave money on the table because all the disc versions are out and all that's left are the AD versions... and at that point--will you end up buying the PS5 all digital?
