Playstation The Official Playstation 5 Thread

Hard to say.
Considering the Disc Drive is missing, i would say at the very least 75 bucks less since that is how much the disc drive costs.
The question is how expensive the additional technology in it is.
Maybe 600? How much is the regular ps5 digital?
It shouldnt cost that much more than a regular one who has stuff like a drive and stand.

The Race was always going to become obsolete, the writing was on the wall for long.
With the last console generation we already pretty much reached where we could with Graphics.
The steps we now take are minimal at best.
You have 8-9 year old games that can stand eye to eye with games from 2024 because the gap is not that big.

Everyone was so focused on Graphics, so much was sacrificed to be able to say a game has good graphics...and now we pretty much reached the point where that isnt truly a selling point anymore because most games have good graphics.
Good looking games that in terms of the art style, often are super bland and lack character.
The industry needs to realize that and go back to where art style etc is top priority...not 4k textures or so.
Batman Arkham Knight comes to mind. I have issues with that game but it was gorgeous and is visually superior to Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad. From a personal perspective, my pc can do 8k on games that support it by my target resolution is still 1080p, 120 fps. Anything above that to me is overkill.

Anyone here planning to get the Pro at launch? I hope this doesn't carry over to PS6 pricing but it might be the new norm.
Nope. Seems like I'll be skipping the PS5 entirely. For the time being, PC and Switch are good enough for my gaming needs. I might even get a Steam Deck down the road.

Also, RE: on phones vs consoles. People are willing to buy/upgrade every year because smartphones are now essential tools for many people. For either personal or professional needs, you can do more than just making calls and sending messages. Amateur photographs basically have a DSLR camera that fits in their pocket.

The asked price for this "Pro" version of a single-purpose plastic box is too much especially for casual gamers. Heck, even enthusiasts don't like it.

I really think Xbox should seize this opportunity and up their game in the console space, like, right now. it's because of this exact thing that the Xbox 360 was able to dominate over the Ps3 for so many years back in the seventh generation. if Xbox did it before, then they can do it again.

The Xbox 360 also sold really well because of piracy. Some people basically had an entire business based on modding Xbox 360 consoles. You couldn't do that with a PS3.

But besides that, yeah it was the better console. It just was a better deal; cheaper, better games... (I'm not talking about quality, can't forget about the RROD 😅) If Xbox starts coming out with great games, people will want an Xbox console. We really do need that competition, you don't want Sony thinking they can do whatever they want.

Yeahhhhh the RROD had a failure rate of over 50% at its peak. Which means 1 in 2 360s bricked. If that's not the worst hardware failure of all time, I don't know what is.

But yeah, maybe Xbox could just stop making their games release on PlayStation and go back to their console selling strategy. It's not too late.

Ahh the days when PS1/PS2 had pirated games, then it stopped with the PS3.

They should have focused on single player games for the umpteenth time.

We'll see in 3 years, if there are real changes if they are still chasing for that big live service game.

1) SPAM GaaS (mostly all multiplayer shooters)
2) SPAM remasters of PS4/PS5 games
3) ???

Hopefully the next step will be more exciting if they want to sell PS6s.

It doesn't even have to be just single player. I'd kill for another traditional shooter with multi-player like Resistance or Killzone.

What if they releases The Last of Us Part 3, Horizon 3, Ghost of Tsushima 2, Spider-Man 3, the next God of War and a remake of Bloodborne in the first two years of the PS6?

Yep, didn't take long from the giving up of Xbox as competitor to seeing material consequences for consumers with a price surprise on the very next console. This pricing strategy is better for a console manufacturer with monopoly power to take full advantage of selling up to those early purchasers when demand is usually high enough for units to sell, while those put off still stay in the ecosystem making purchases on older hardware and then upgrade later in the cycle at more sensible prices.

Good for the console manufacturer, bad for the consumer. Eventually if it stays like this Sony won't even need those hugely expensive genre-leading single player games to differentiate their console when there is no equivalent competition in the same sub-sector. Can go all in on GAAS at that point.

If the Ps5 pro flops hard enough, then Sony is gonna lose money on all of the R&D they spent on it. Microsoft should market the hell out of CoD on gamepass to ramp up subscriptions as well as Series X sales

Yeah, stick with the area where they are amongst the very best in the market rather than the area they know F all about, an area full of dross where the likes of Concord are even more behind the curve than the average. I guess they took a lot of encouragement from the legit success of Helldivers 2. I knew that would be a double edged sword of success. :csad:

Maybe Helldivers 2 should just remain as the multiplayer pp PlayStation game, and Sony should focus on story driven games for everything else.

Without competition the need for future consoles to be competitive isn't so strong (unless Nintendo one day pivot back to compete in the high performance arena - seems unlikely with how successful the Switch strategy has been). You can price them higher so they don't lose so much money at launch, and the specs also don't need to be competitive so the costs can also be lower. Without strong competition, eventually you don't even need regular launches as you can make a ton of money on people still spending on the ecosystem from the prior generation without any additional risk, as only a minority will move to pc.

That's what most of us would like but Sony execs are very likely thinking the opposite and how they can divert a few hundred million by cancelling a high profile single player game and taking another 8 throws of the dice to get another Helldivers 2.
