Playstation The Official Playstation 5 Thread

Still, a baffling mindset.
Like, do they have different numbers than we have? What numbers do they have that make them want to continue in a market where especially Sony experienced one if not THE most humiliating defeat of all time?
300+ Million dollar and years of development for a Live Service game that didnt even survive a month...how do you not abandon that market?

As far as why a continued effort towards live service games, Hulst pointed to Helldivers 2’s success as a reason. The co-op title from Arrowhead Game Studios showed how a live service game can succeed in the modern era, and it’s something that Sony and PlayStation are paying attention to.

“We are learning a lot as we establish the ability to develop high-quality live service titles within SIE,” he said. “Helldivers 2 attracted many players through continuous content provision, and achieved results that support the potential of live service titles.”

Of course the Playstation CEO glosses over the fact that they nearly killed that game as well by trying to retroactively require PC players to have PSN account to play it.

And forgetting the dozens of other live service games that keep failing to gain any traction.

When the Horizon Multiplayer game flops.... they are in for another rude awakening.

They bought Bungie, just leave them to their Destiny nonsense and let other studios cook. Speaking of, can someone poke Insomniac and ask if they're alive and well.

I wonder how long they could keep up this console eras, and upping the number "PS_" everytime there's a new hardware/model. I just hope PS6 and beyond, have backwards compatibility from all eras of PlayStation games, starting from 1994 even if the PS1/2 games are only accessible through PSN or rereleased in blu-ray discs. As I really don't want to start from scratch.

Also the longevity of physical discs, is a concern as I'm not confident if Sony would continue releasing game discs 15 years from now (2040). 15 years ago, (2010), there were a lot of record stores for music/movies from where I live. They vanished one by one by 2016 to 2019. Though I can still buy those online, the experience of buying them is quite different, as I prefer picking them up in the physical store and see posters/displays, and don't think about shipping fee, parcel delivery time, if there are only few stocks available and if the disc/case aren't broken. 70% of the music cds I bought online this year, are all from abroad, which is kinda crazy as I never would have thought that would happen 10 years ago.

They're frustratingly quiet. SM2 came and went. It would be good to hear some positive news from them.
oh I see. my guess they are working on a new IP, or hard at work for the sequel to Spider-Man 3. I'm sure they are doing fine, either way!

That huge leak revealed everything they were up to: A shelved Spider-Man multiplayer game, abandoned SM2 dlc, apparently a Venom game, and of course Wolverine. I'm genuinely worried there is some chaos going on behind the scenes.

I honestly completely forgot about Wolverine 🤦🏽 of course that is their next product. Don't worry, I think we'll hear something about that this year.

IMO I think the chaos already happened. Crunch and burnout caused them to cut out stuff from the 3rd act of the game. As bad as the hack was (since it also leaked employee's information) unfortunately it's probably the one thing that finally convinced Sony to let Insomniac refocus and cut down on their workload. So if anything, the reasoning we don't hear much from them is probably because they aren't being forced to push out announcements. And that's a good thing.

Like I mentioned before, they need to work on backwards compatibility. New consoles are gonna happen because technology will continue to get better, but I hope the older games won't be lost and can be played in PS7/8/9.

Consoles aren't going to die, even though they keep trying to get rid of physical, I think (hope) there is enough push back to prevent that from happening because then you no longer own a game, you merely rent it for full price until they decide you can no longer play it or require you to repurchase it on their next generation.

I think game streaming (no downloading) not fully taking off yet is helping the physical format for now. But who knows when 6G and 7G arrives. The main reason why I still own physical discs, aside from the artwork is I don't want to download a 50GB to 150GB game for 8 hours. And I don't think the pause button works well because when I do that, it restarts the download from 0kb. Having a disc, cuts a lot of the downloading period.

Data caps are another problem with download only games. Now that net neutrality is dead for the foreseeable future, ISP's are going to gouge the hell out of people with anything they can nickel and dime with and several ISP's already do it.

I think data caps might not be an issue 10 years from now. It depends how fast the internet connection is when 6G and in about 2 decades, 7G arrive.

One of my concerns with physical discs is Sony could make them obsolete for future consoles, that you would need an older console just for those game discs to work. PS1 to 3 discs aren't playable in Ps4 and 5, and thats probably the case with Ps6 too. It didn't matter to them that newer Xbox models implemented bc from the first era of Xbox games. Who knows what gonna happen with backwards compatibility when PS7 to PS9 get made, and that terrifies me.

I recently watched a documentary on Netflix called Buy Now which has really widened my eyes on the harm of physical media, but I also hope it never goes away. I still buy most of my games physically.

Jim Ryan’s tenure really overdid it with the dozen or more GaaS games they greenlit. Here there’s more fallout perhaps after the Concord failure. I don’t begrudge Sony for wanting to make some GaaS games - it’s selfish and potentially leaving money on the table to think every game has to appeal to you or me personally - but they really went about this unintelligently.

It’s good they cancelled gaas games but I don’t hey why they are still moving forward with a horizon multiplayer game Sony needs to wake up…. I just don’t understand why Sony is shoving that franchise down peoples throats
