The Orphanage

How would you rate it next to Del Toro's directorial works Tza ?
 
I don't see why they keep calling it this year's Pan's Labyrinth. :huh:
But Bayona certainly knows how to build up tension.
[blackout]Heartstrings were pulled a lot on this, at least for me. I never felt that with Del Toro, sympathy sure.[/blackout]
I don't know how to answer this without possibly spoiling it. :( I think it needs to be seen fresh. Maybe Bayona is a little lighter than Del Toro.

Interesting. Cronos, Devil's Backbone and Pan's all get me emotionally engaged with the characters and the problems they encounter. I really feel for all of them. I always saw that as one of Del Toro's trademarks for his films, sans the ones he does here. And yes, it's odd to compare the Orphanage to Pan's. Pan's wasn't a horror movie in any way. It reminded more of old world fairytales, before Disney gets a hold of them and lightens them up.
 
It's only being compared because of Guillermo's involvement. Which isn't a bad thing at all.

I can't wait to see this as I've been hearing really good things about it.
 
I saw The Orphanage...and color me unimpressed. I liked it, but I didn't love it. It got too 'smooshy' in the end; as if this is the ideal horror movie for old women.
 
I loved it. The suspense killed me sometimes.

And Tomas is ****ing scary.

my guess its b/c del toro produced it. i don't get any other connection other than that.

Like I said, the suspense.

Even when nothing's going on, you're still sitting on the edge of your seat.

Best horror film I've seen in a while.
 
I'll give it a shot. I want a horror film where the atmosphere works with the plot.
 
I've yet to see this film, it does look quite suspenseful. Is it worth viewing?

Was it around the level of "Fragile" or "Darkness"? They didn't have very scary scenes, but great atmosphere and suspense.
 
Good, I was hoping there'd be a thread for this!!! Saw the film yesterday and loved it :heart: Creepy, and (BIG PLOT SPOILER, ONLY READ IF YOU'VE SEEN THE FILM!!)
all I could think when I found out how her son died was "um, wow." Definitely didn't expect the noises at the beginning of the movie to be related to the end. Craziness.
 
El Orfanato is brilliant. One of my favorites from 2007. It reminded me so much of the ghost stories of old... The performances were just stellar, and they felt real. You feel uneasy the whole time, and you don't know why. I think there is also some greatness because you can view the film from a paranormal level or a realistic one... The ending made my entire being sink, and made me rethink the picture in a whole new light. One of the few R rated movies I've ever thought was given it's rating not because of it's violence, or language necessarily but just because of the results of the picture... Nice, dark, and morbid. I loved it....
 
So is this film good or is it a meh?

Seeing the trailer gave me a "Darkness" kind of vibe and that movie pissed me off.

Tech specs include: 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer and a Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1 EX track with English subtitles.
 
So I finally sat down and watched this. Since the same guy who did PL was involved I decided to give this shot. I enjoyed the movie but I hated the ending just like I hated PL's ending. It was pretty suspenseful, and it kept me guessing the whole time. This was the first scary movie that I was actually creeped out from in a long time.

OMG I know. My mouth was open when Laura found out the truth about Simon.

8/10 cause I hated the ending.:o
