The Phantom

I won't lie, I thought that was actually a decent trailer for a decent looking show! Color me intrigued and I will definitely tune in. I like the whole "sequel to the original" angle that the story is taking on. It sounds like a good story. The one thing that looked a little weird was some elements of the suit, particularly the mask. I can't give a definite opinion as we really didn't see a full view of it, but I dug the concept art.

It was kind of hilarious when they showed him the original costume, and says "I'm not wearing THAT" only to put on a more ridiculous looking costume later.

Maybe the pilot will clear it up, but I don't see why this kid has to be the Phantom. Is it really only because he's the former Phantom's son? Instead of finding someone whose already a well-trained good guy, they just pick the son who has no experience at all?

Yeah, seems counter productive to find some green, totally untrained guy to give such an important role. It's not as if the Phantom has to be a "Walker," nobody but Guran knows who's under there.

Whatever, looks silly.

I do not mind the costume at all. I would have liked the original one, but remember this is SYFY, they do not want costumes or shows to get all outragously fantastical.

How outrageous is the Phantom's comic costume that they couldn't even stay remotely true to it visually? It's a simple, classic, iconic look that's endured for over 70 years. Outside of the US, the Phantom is an immensely popular comic character, just as popular as Batman and Superman in some countries. Whatever this is that SyFy has come up with is overly complicated.
And the way the action scenes are shot and lit, you can't make out a single detail that would clue you to the fact that this is supposed to be the Phantom.

it kind of does...."my sons and their sons shall follow"

Phantom 2040 did the same thing....took an untrained guy who didn't know who he was and ta da....the Phantom

KenK, Just remember, how horrible Sci Fi's attempt at a Flash Gordon's tv series. Remeber how it was so different from all the previous serials, film and classic Filmmation series, and you will see what they do not like about pulp heroes and superheroes. At least...The Phantom is a hero, in a costume, fighting EEEEEEEEvil. I feel that the people at the SYFY channel believe that The Phantom's purple costume is silly. They do not like things they think are silly. It is just like the Space Clothes in Battlestar Galactica. It made more sense to them that Colonists from an ancient civilization, would have their version of The Gap, and the clothes are just like on Earth. Also, this is not the first superhero/pulp story where the son of the original hero takes up his fathers job. He is the 22nd Phantom after all.

Lorne Greenes bathrobe being a prime example....you know he was probably naked under that thing

The trailer kind of made me lose hope for the show. It just looks tacky to me. Very melodramatic and silly.

TheCorpulent1, Did you not approve of the bad guy, Showcasing, how EEEEEEEEEEvil he was, by decapitating one of his minions? I always approve of there being a Hero, fighting an EEEEEvil villain! I do not love the change in The Phantom's costume, but Filmmakers did change the X-Men's costumes (a property I am a much bigger fan of) and that didn't ruin The X-Men Trilogy for me. I recommend all give this new miniseries a chance.

I don't really care about the costume. The villain's acting was just awful. The lead seems to be a decent actor, but the rest of it looks really cheesy to me. I'll probably give the first episode a try still, but I'm not expecting much.

But X-Men costumes change like the weather in the comics. None of the characters save maybe Wolverine have ever had a single enduring costume. There are details that never really change, but as a whole nothing's ever been constant. The Phantom's had the same costume since its creation over 70 years ago. Even with the movie costumes for Batman, they've never really mucked around with it so much that you can't look at him and immediately say, "Hey, that's Batman!". If you took out the scene from the trailer where they action show the real Phantom costume, I wouldn't know what the hell the show was about.

I really like the Phantom's new look....let's face it, his old costume was just plain ugly. It needed a lot of work.

I think this actually may be a really interesting mini-series.

His old costume was plain. His new costume for the show is ugly.

But to each his own.

well the world has been ok with it for the past 70 years...I wouldn't mind a change, but the new one is ****ing ugly

The world hasn't really seen The Phantom on screen...except for one movie...which looked horrible.

it was ok....its something that does look better on paper Ill agree with you there

Yeah, I know all that. But the fact is, regular people don't know who's under the mask so till Kit (is that his name in this?) is ready they could have had some ex-Navy seal or some other flavor of bad-ass filling the role and nobody would have been the wiser till the actual Walker stepped into the role.

That could be kind of cool if they did a Knightfall sort of thing where the SEAL objects to being ousted by some yuppie heir to the legacy and becomes a villain.

Looking forward to seeing this. Even if its just purely a two night movie.

Yeah, have some middle aged bad-a** who's been The Phantom for the past 21 years or so and he mightily objects to the real heir to the title coming in to take it over ... but he still has to train him. It could set up a weird hero-sidekick-very-soon-to-be-replacement situation. Now that would be a great movie.

Heck, the sequel pretty much writes itself.

KryptonSite also says that...

The Syfy Channel will be airing a two-part miniseries featuring the classic comic character The Phantom in 2010. The first in-costume promotional image is now available as well as news that The Phantom will be airing December 22 in Canada

Looks like he bought his costume at ***** sporting goods during black friday.

If this gets picked for series they need to make his costume at least closer to his namesake.
