I suppose the fact that MTV actually plays MUSIC at those odd hours of the night and early morning helps, huh? :D Left to my own devices without a work schedule to adhere to, I tend to gravitate towards getting up around 10-11am and staying up until 2-3am. When I have time away from work like that, it also seems to be my most productive time in terms of my electronica compositions and my writing. Not a coincidence, I believe.

some of the songs I've written that I like the most have come to me late at night

Most creative folks that I know are like this, PLAS. I have friends that work in all kinds of mediums: sculpture, painting, spoken word, music, poetry and novels, experimental video, avante garde performance art. All of them seem to feel like the wee hours of the morning are their most creative times.

chin up chin up's album "we should never have lived like we were skyscrapers" is really good. if you like bands like modest mouse, creeper lagoon, seam and american football you'll like them. they're poppy art-rock with wispered male vocals. check them out.

my wife just gave me three cd's for my birthday.

built to spill - "you in reverse"
minus the bear - "they make beer commercials like this"
the flaming lips - "at war with the mystics"

also, i've been listening to art brut's "bang bang rock & roll" lately and it's really good. they're kind of garage band-ish and the singer sort of speak/shouts the lyrics in a very strong cockney accent. plus, the lyrics are hillarious. give 'em a listen.

Two bands I've been listening to quite a bit, lately:

Danko Jones - These guys remind me of Thin Lizzy A LOT.

Wolfmother - Freaky-ass retro-rock. The lyrics and vocal style the singer uses on "Apple Tree" are just bizarre, but I can't stop listening to it!

Highly recommend both these bands.

Yeah, I just started listening to it a day or so ago, it's great.

"Got myself a brand new girlfriend. So we went to the cinema, we came home from the cinema, we went through the front door, up the stairs, through the bedroom door, onto the bedroom floor. I've seen her naked...twice!"

"There's not much glamour about the English weather, there's not much left keeping us together. Sunshine on a rainy day makes me want to move away. I think I've got it sorted, I'm gonna get myself deported. I'm considering a move to L.A. [...] When I get off that plane the first thing I'm gonna do is strip naked to the waist, and ride my Harley Davidson up and down Sunset Strip. Hm. I might even get a tatoo. My problems are never gonna find me. I'm not sending one letter, or even a postcard back. I'm drinking Hennessy with Morrissey on a beach out of reach somewhere very far away."

[On the subject of old girlfriend, Emily Kane:] "I don't even know where she lives. I've not seen her in ten years. Nine months, three weeks, four days, six hours, thirteen minutes, five seconds. Other girls went and other girls came I can't get over my old flame. All my friends think I'm insane, I'm still in love with Emily Kane. There's a beast in my soul that can't be tamed, I'm still in love with Emily Kane. [...] I hope this song Finds you fame, I want school kids on buses singing your name."

They're playing locally next Friday, pretty sure I'm gonna check em out.
Definitely worth a listen.

Yeah, I'm liking 'em. I just picked up their stuff recently and really got a chance to listen to it in earnest the last couple of days. They are right out of the 70's. They remind me of Zep, Styx, REO Speedwagon and a lot of other bands from that era. It's great to see a return to real rock and roll, lately. I've heard good things about Whitestarr as well, but haven't had a chance to look for any of their stuff. Check out that Danko Jones stuff I mentioned. I think you'll dig it.

Yeah, I think Wolfmother can pull off the retro-rock wave that The Darkness couldn't get started.

I'll be sure to check out Danko Jones as well.

I hear ya. I've never cared that much for The Darkness's music. Just seems to be missing something when I listen to it, but I'm not sure what that thing is. Whatever it is, they don't have it.

My personal favourite lyrics of theirs:

''We want to be the band that write the song, that make Israel and Palestine get along''

Plas, you're pretty good at reviewing music. Have you ever written any for magazines? if not i'm sure you could..

not yet professionaly, I've done some write ups for friend's blogs, fanzines and websites, but that's pretty much it

I love music, and talking, so this thread is pretty much what I love to do

oh yeah, and Wolfmother kinda reminds me of The Darkness

check out the figurines' "skeleton" if you like built to spill-style indie rock. they're a fun band.

anyone else pick up the RACONTEURS debut album "broken boy soldiers"? its a good solid album...not as amazing as i expected it to be, but its defenitely worthwhile. having heard live bootlegs of their shows and radio sessions, they sound a lot better live...but the album is a defenite goodie. i'd give it a 3/4

new Snow Patrol album is definitly sweet!!!! good choice

so is the new Tragey Album (nerve damage)

i recommend both bands..but beware they are nothing like each other...in the least....

also... check out the Cancer Bats...amazing..

So, has ANYONE besides thedeadite listened to the new Snow Patrol?

Cuz I was listening to it again today, and it's really quite fantastic.

It would be a good idea for you all to go buy/listen to it.
