"The Politicking of Food"?

No, but is choosing a cheaper or more convenient way to eat truly that stupid? I don't think many people (not just Americans, but everybody) thinks THAT long-term.

In other places where fast food is becoming more prevalent, obesity is starting to become a problem too. This points to a marketing and availability issue, not necessarily a stupidity issue on the part of Americans.

Certainly American culture needs to change, but how to go about doing that is the rub. I'm not sure if taxing the "bad" stuff specifically would help.

Using taxes to control behavior never works, and it's never been anything other than a thinly veiled way to increase tax revenue under the guise of "we're monetarily punishing people for being irresponsible!"

Yep, looks to my signature....

I believe it is "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness", not "Life, Liberty and what the government thinks will make me happy".

we need to start promoting wellness, but its just easier to tax the bad stuff

I definitely think we need to teach our kiddos how to live (eat, exercise) a better lifestyle.... we could start by reforming the PE classes in our schools....many schools are taking out the Health Class, which IMO is the perfect place to do the heavy duty teaching on a healthier lifestyle....

AND, instead of recess at the elementary level, make the teacher's get up off their asses on the playground and actually begin teaching them how to exercise, making sure that they take special care with those kids that are obese and help them begin to start an exercise program that they can enjoy. AND STOP using recess as the punishment, by taking it away.....they need that exercise.

Do something like Sweden's "hiking program"...

There are 1,000s of city parks across our nation, but people are afraid to go there because of the crime, CLEAN UP THOSE PARKS AND MAKE THEM SAFE....

There are so many things we could do besides more taxes.

Okay, you had me up until that point. To quote the late, lamented T.J. Detweiler, leave recess alone! Completely unstructured play time for 10 minutes a day is important. I wish my office had recess ... :(

But yeah, PE classes are extremely important and are a vital part of promoting fitness. I'm like the worst athlete in the world, but even I took elective PE all throughout schooling. It taught me that even though I couldn't do a layup to save my life, I could at least be the strongest and fittest person out there, and it's led me to where I am today.

10 minutes a day IS FINE.......they get anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes.

Let them eat lunch and go outside for 10 minutes, or vice versa....

Works for me.

I played volleyball, basketball, softball and tennis up until my Junior year and then played only tennis....

I was in PE for about 1 week each year, and all we did was play dodge ball and knock the heads off of the other students.....it was great fun, too bad they outlawed dodge ball in school. Damn liberals.....:o:cmad:

Seriously? 30 minute recess? 45 minutes? No wonder American test scores are so low.

Or are you including the lunch break as well in that figure?

Yes that is all of their outside time combined.

No, our test scores are low because with No Child Left Behind, we did leave a group behind they are called our GT students....

Up until 6th grade our scores are up there as far as industrialized countries....15 year olds are #27 out of 35 industrialized countries in Math and Science scores....why? because we left our GT students back in 6th grade.

The reveal will surprise some of you, and I will explain later after a few more posts. This has a bit to do with politics because of how certain public school "menus" are constructed.

Anyone know about "Play 60?" It's about urging kids to spend an hour outside daily exercising. Of course those that watch sports a lot know that the NFL is behind this initiative. Good to see the nation's most popular sports league doing this:

http://www.nflrush.com/play60

I'm not sure if the other sports have a similar program though.

yea...theyve had that for a while....baseball has something similar, don't know the name of it though

Still it's good to see the NFL do this. It's why they are the number one pro sports league in America.

If you teach kids HIIT for 10 minutes a day, it would be more efficient. Burpees should be the new pushup I say.

You've got your dairy, grain, potato chips, fruits and veggies. All that's missing is a meatball, and according to the FDA you've got a food pyramid-approved meal!

Only one of two food related threads I could find and I didn't want to create a new one.

(NaturalNews) Food allergies have become a global epidemic and conventional medicine has no cure. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control, food allergies (in kids) have increased by 50% between 1997 and 2011. Could this have anything to do with genetically engineered foods?

Since the 1990s, when genetically modified (GM) foods were approved, we have seen a dramatic increase in food allergies, asthma, ADHD and many forms of cancer. As expected, most corporately-controlled, government health 'experts' would say genetically modified (GM) foods are 'safe' - but where are the safety studies to back up this unscientific claim of safety? (there are none)

GM foods cause massive damage to the digestive system. On the next NaturalNews Talk Hour, Jonathan Landsman and Robyn O'brien - a former food industry analyst, mother of four children and food activist - reveal the true dangers within our food supply causing leaky gut syndrome, compromised immunity and the dramatic increase in cancer rates - worldwide.

They criticize claims of safety as unscientific, then turn around and present a study with unsound methodology. They also blatantly conflate correlation with causation. This article is garbage.

Most of the people who rally against GMO's don't really seem to understand the biological or technological principles underlying their creation and implementation, in my experience.

There's also the fact that we're exposing ourselves to A LOT more chemicals than in the past, not just the stuff in food. What we put on our skin, what we breathe in, that affects us too. So to pinpoint GMOs as THE bad guy is being very short-sighted, IMO.

Definitely. hell, they were talking the other day about all the chemicals that that are sprayed on your COUCH to make them fire-******ent (supposedly) that you absorb through your skin over time.we're constantly bombared with chemicals on a daily basis - in what we eat, what we drink, what we breathe, what medications (if any) we take, what lotions we rub on us,what toothpaste we use,and apparently even what we sit on. there's no such thing as being able to live a completely chemical free lifestyle.
