Just watched The Shadow (1994) and that superhero film is a classic. Alec Baldwin is mesmerizing as Lamont Cranston/Ying Ko/The Shadow and honestly it has made me wonder how come The Shadow has never ever gotten a 2nd chance to be on the big screen? The character of The Shadow has a pretty impressive backstory and he has also inspired such characters like Batman. Hell he is like a Batman meets Dr Strange type of character if you want my assessment. The Shadow is not even a DC or Marvel character he is Dark Horse I think right? Either way I know I would love to see a reboot of the character wouldn't you?

The problem with the Shadow is he is stuck in his time period. Batman, Supes and so on are timeless, but the Shadow with his fedora and pistols is rooted in the 30's gangster genre. Which is great for a period piece, and being retro hasn't done Indiana Jones any harm, but it's hard to see The Shadow appealing to today's audiences (apart from me ;)).

I watched The Shadow again just the other night on TV. Great CB adventure. It was supposed to be the start of a franchise but it performed so badly at the box office that the idea was canned. Real shame :csad:

I always loved that first movie, wish it stayed at least as long as Ghostbusters.

I finally meet a lover of that film. WOW. Most other boards i've been on over the past 10+ years, all i hear is hate for that film..
But i agree. The shadow is a surprising film not to have gotten even a spin off, or redo..

Why? It flopped. The Shadow is a relic of early 20th century pop culture. Movie studios are interested in what's successful today, not the best part of 100 years ago.

I love the movie. I feel it is the best thing Baldwin ever did. I was always disappointed that they only released it in fullscreen on DVD.....but the other day I found it on my cable service's ON DEMAND system in widescreen. I was able to burn that to DVD.

To bad, would have loved to have gotten a sequel.
I'm all for a relaunch of the character in film.
honestly I'd rather see a new Shadow (and other Pulp era characters) films, before yet another, Batman, Superman, Spider-Man, F4, etc.. relaunch.

I wonder if some clever entrepreneur could come up with a "Street and Smith Universe" to take advantage of the company's best known pulp icons, mainly Shadow and Doc Savage.

Still, not sure such a universe could compete on the big screen-- but maybe the small, streaming screen.

The Shadow is a character that would benefit from serial/TV series format.
