The Surge is an upcoming Action-RPG that takes heavy inspiration from the Souls series and plunges it into a Sci-Fi universe. The game is currently slated to launch on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, but DualShockers thought to ask developer Deck13 about the possibility of a Nintendo Switch version. In short, don't hold your breath.

Looks good. But so did Lords of the Fallen and I ended up not really enjoying it. Both games have cool art direction but I'm not a fan of the games that hard just to be hard.

'Target, Loot and Equip'

Deck13 continues to roll out the looks on its upcoming Sci-Fi Action-RPG, The Surge and this time the focus is on the game's limb cutting system. Taking pages from the book of Dead Space, The Surge puts its own spin on limb cutting game mechanics by varying up the kind of loot that will drop from a defeated enemy, depending on which limb you target.
Control over what kind of loot you get is entirely in the hands of the player, as before entering combat, deciding which limb to target is something of a strategic element. You can fight with both vertical and horizontal attacks for better accuracy while aiming, and depending on which limb you cut off, you could end up with a schematic for the sliced armor part, salvaged materials for crafting whichever piece of armor you attacked, or even the weapon previously held by the enemy.

The Surge - Target, Loot and Equip Trailer

Part of the strategic approach to facing enemies in combat is not only deciding which piece of armor to target, but whether to target an armored section at all. Some areas of enemies are weaker than others, which can be exploited for an easier fight. But an easier fight also equals lesser rewards. Tougher enemies drop the best rewards, so it'll be up to the player to balance the risk versus reward. The Surge releases on PC, PS4, and Xbox One on May 16th, 2017.

Focus Home Interactive also announced more details about the game's PS4 Pro support, with the first update being ready at launch. The support is very Nioh-like in the sense that it will give players the option to play the game at Dynamic 4K at 30fps or in 1080p at 60fps. There will be another update coming later that will add HDR Support. The Surge's release is just over a month away, but if you want to go ahead and take the plunge, you can do so by heading over here.

The Surge ‘Combat’ trailer

A look at the action RPG's combat system.

The-Surge-Trailer_04-20-17.jpg

Focus Home Interactive and Deck13 have released a new trailer for The Surge, introducing the action RPG’s combat system.
Here’s a brief overview of the trailer, via Focus Home:
As showcased in the Target, Loot & Equip Trailer, make use of vertical and horizontal attacks, as well as strike power, to target and dismember specific limbs, so you can loot what you cut. Looting upgrades for your exo-suit is key to progression, and surviving challenging physically based combat situations is a matter of skill.

Positioning and speed are vital, so make use of your exo-enhanced dodges, blocks, ducks and jumps to avoid attacks while managing stamina, ensuring you’re always in the right place to strike the limb you want, or to avoid a potentially damning blow. The rules of combat apply to both you, and your enemy : get hit in an unarmored limb, and you’ll go down faster. Take advantage of the enemy’s weaknesses while balancing your own, and you’ll walk away with his strengths.

But you’re not alone. Throughout your journey you’ll be assisted by your industrial drone, with abilities once used for CREO’s industrial needs now manipulated into a fighting machine. Shield yourself, or Burn, knock down, pull, and blast enemies at your will as you continue to fight in melee.

The Surge will launch for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on May 16.

The-Surge-DLC_11-16-17.jpg

The October-announced The Surge expansion “A Walk in the Park” will launch for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on December 5, publisher Focus Home Interactive and developer Deck13 Interactive announced.

The expansion will launch alongside The Surge: Complete Edition, which will include the full game and every downloadable content. Pre-orders begin today on Steam and November 21 on the PlayStation Store.

Here’s an overview of the expansion, via Focus Home Interactive:

The Surge brought players deep into the high-tech CREO industrial complex, overrun by deadly machines, rogue AI and deranged exoskeleton workers. A Walk in the Park gives players a breath of fresh air by taking them to an environment that’s more open and colorful, though no less deadly. CREO World is an amusement park built by CREO for its employees and their families. Forget your cravings for cotton candy – CREO World was not spared from the Surge. The entire park is a deadly trap, where roaming rescue teams have gone insane and robotic mascots patrol freely, patiently waiting for new visitors to offer a deadly welcome.

CREO World presents a wealth of fresh challenges for players. Originally created to celebrate CREO and its mission, the park is a radically different setting from the rest of the complex, full of branching paths and secrets to discover. Survive the raging mascots and explore the park’s attractions, before taking on a fearsome boss in the devastated park. Through technical and spectacular fights, you will face this new threat, cutting and equipping 16 all-new weapons, sets of armor, and new implants to upgrade and further customize the way you want to play.
The Surge is available now for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
