Variety reports that Tom Cruise and Spyglass Entertainment are circling each other on The Tourist, the Bharat Nalluri-directed remake of the 2005 French thriller Anthony Zimmer.

The film has emerged as the strongest contender for Cruise's next film, and his first star vehicle since the Bryan Singer-directed Valkyrie at United Artists.

Written by Gosford Park scribe Julian Fellowes, the thriller concerns an American tourist who finds his life in danger when a female Interpol agent uses him as a dupe to flush out an elusive criminal with whom she once had an affair.

Spyglass principals Gary Barber, Roger Birnbaum and Jonathan Glickman will produce with Canal Plus.

Cruise has been careful in weighing his next film, and the trade adds that his participation in The Tourist hasn't solidified.

Never heard of the director but this sounds more promising than the chef thing he was linked to the other day.

This definitely sounds much better. I like to see him in these types of roles....should be another good one....hopefully it gets going soon.

I wonder which role he is interested in, the Tourist or the guy the Interpol agent is trying to flush out.

If I were him I would probably go after the role of the the tourist...but both could be good roles for him IMO.

I agree, the Tourist role would allow him to play the everyman, where as the other role of the slick criminal could play close to the default Cruise.

"You know in England, their word for 'tourist' is 'poofter!'"

Sorry, I couldn't resist. I watch too much Arrested Development. :D

 I am English and we don't use that word for tourist.

I can definitely see Cruise playing either role, but being the villain would be very interesting. And a nice spin.

Of course you don't. But the man below doesn't know that. ;)

In Arrested Development, Tobias Funke (above) is believed by many of the other characters to be a closeted, though extremely naive homosexual. Given that there's some controversy surrounding Tom Cruise's sexual orientation, I couldn't help but remember the Tobias quote about "the English word for tourist." :oldrazz:

Charlize Theron plans ‘Tourist’ trip

Charlize Theron is negotiating to star with Tom Cruise in “The Tourist,” the Bharat Nalluri-directed remake of the 2005 French thriller “Anthony Zimmer.”

In the Julian Fellowes-scripted drama, Theron will play a female Interpol agent who uses an American tourist in an attempt to flush out an elusive criminal with whom she once had an affair.

Production is expected to begin by March. Script is currently getting a polish by Christopher McQuarrie, who co-wrote the upcoming Cruise starrer “Valkyrie” for United Artists.

Spyglass principals Gary Barber, Roger Birnbaum and Jonathan Glickman will produce with Canal Plus. Nalluri most recently directed the HBO film “Tsunami” and “Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day.”

Theron was most recently seen alongside Will Smith in “Hancock,” and she will be seen shortly starring in the Guillermo Arriaga-directed “The Burning Plain” and alongside Viggo Mortensen in John Hillcoat’s “The Road.”

Theron is repped by One Talent Management.

Charlize steps out of 'Tourist' role, and Angelina could be making the trip instead
By Steven Zeitchik

Charlize Theron has opted out of the Spyglass-produced thriller "The Tourist," to which she has long been attached, and in talks to replace her is one Angelina Jolie, sources say.

The tomb-raiding one, fresh off an action-heavy part in "Salt," would take on the one-part seductress, one-part action role of the title.

The project is now also seeking a director, as Bharat Nalluri, the "Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day" helmer who had been attached to direct, is as of last week off the project, with producers now seeking a new helmer to pair with Jolie. Neither Spyglass nor the director or actresses' reps could immediately be reached for comment.

Production has at least until this point been tentatively set for early 2010, which could prompt producers to act quickly on a director.

A remake of the French thriller "Anthony Zimmer" from 2005, "Tourist" centers on an American tourist who, on behalf of Interpol, goes undercover to entrap a former lover who's a suspected global criminal. It follows in the long tradition of innocents caught up in shady activities abroad that dates back to Hitchcock ("The Man Who Knew Too Much"), Polanski ("Frantic") and beyond, and a theme that also has contemporary echoes with "Taken" this past year.

It's not the first time there's been movement on "Tourist." Tom Cruise had been loosely attached at an earlier point for the lead male role, but Sam Worthington will now play the part as he rides his
"Terminator: Salvation" and "Avatar" hot streak.

There are few A-list females who producers like for lead action roles, and with Jolie not attached to star in any imminent projects post-"Salt," "Tourist" is seen as a perfect itinerary for her.

Von Donnersmarck Frontrunner to Direct Tourist

Source:Variety
October 19, 2009

Variety is reporting that Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck (The Lives of Others) is the frontrunner to direct The Tourist, starring Sam Worthington and Angelina Jolie.

The trade says that Spyglass is aiming for a 2011 release for the thriller. Production is expected to start in February.

In the remake of the 2005 French thriller Anthony Zimmer, an American tourist (Worthington) finds his life in danger when a female Interpol agent (Jolie) uses him as a dupe to flush out an elusive criminal with whom she once had an affair.

Spyglass is producing in partnership with StudioCanal, with Gary Barber, Roger Birnbaum and Jonathan Glickman producing. Julian Fellowes wrote a script that was rewritten by Christopher McQuarrie.

Every tourist has some war stories.

Spyglass Entertainment's thriller remake "The Tourist" has run into another set of hiccoughs, with major players shifting around like luggage on a conveyor. Male lead Sam Worthington has fallen off, and Johnny Depp is in negotiations to replace him.

Additionally, director Florian von Donnersmarck has exited the project over creative differences, and Alfonso Cuaron is in detailed talks to step in. Bharat Nalluri was once attached to direct with Tom Cruise in the lead role.

Angelina Jolie -- herself a recent replacement for Charlize Theron, who was long attached to the project -- remains in the lead female role.

The revamp of the 2005 French spy thriller "Anthony Zimmer" involves a female Interpol agent who ropes an everyman American tourist visiting France into being bait in the hunt for a wanted criminal who's also her former lover.

Graham King's GK Films is financing and distributing through its new output deal with Sony.

The UTA-repped Depp has several films in the can -- "Alice in Wonderland," "The Rum Diary" -- but has been waiting to get his next project moving. The fourth "Pirates of the Caribbean" had been a strong possibility.

Cuaron, also repped by UTA, last directed "Children of Men" in 2006.

Production on "Tourist" is scheduled to begin early next year.

Johnny Depp? Holy crap! In a movie with the female version of himself, Jolie? It makes you wonder what is actually up with Pirates 4?
I mean, it sounds like The Tourist is ready to go at this point..is Depp gonna jump on board Pirates afterwards, and then Lone Ranger? I smell a delay..

And Who else thinks that the entire cast should wear a fanny pack and Bermuda shorts?

:wow: This just took a left turn into Awesomeville!

Just when I was about to say "**** this movie!" after hearing von Donnersmarck is off. Now Cuaron might step in now? Awesomeness, indeed.

I ****ing love Cuaron. This movie is going to be great.

Those two rotations are huge for a project like this, and the lead pairings would've been epic....5 years ago. Lord forgive me, but Jolie isn't what she was anymore. Wanted was almost a pain looking at her, Salt isn't faring much better. I'd rather Jolie stay in the drama role for now, because femme fatale she no longer is in my eyes. :(
