The Tourist
It sounds great on paper. Two acclaimed, likeable movie stars(Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp) the stunning visuals of of Paris and Venice, the writers Christopher McQuarrie of acclaimed films (Usual Suspects) and Julian Fellowes(Gosford Park) great ingredients for a great film, but what made it to the screen is a lukewarm concoction.
a schoolteacher from Wisconsin, named Frank (Johnny Depp) meets woman of mystery
Elise (Angelina Jolie) on a Paris to Venice train. She plans to meet her lover who has stolen hundreds of millions from an english gangster Reginald Shaw(Steven Berkoff )
who with his goons are on her trail, she is also being pursued by by two Scotland Yard inspectors (Paul Bettany, Timothy Dalton) Frank is instantly taken with her and he will serve her purpose as the fall guy under the ruse that he is her lover.
The Tourist definitely has its charming moments, and its moments of cute humor. Its a great looking film, thanks to Cinematographer John Seale and Angelina Jolie.
Even in super thin mode Jolie is a joy to watch with bright red full lips i actually leaned
forward to see if her lipstick was on her teeth or left an imprint on her glass.
The banter between the two is nice, but even the few action scenes are just far to sluggish and lead to more corny stiff scenes as he film moves along.
Depp is ok in the beginning of the film, but is mostly in hapless and meek mode.Steven Berkoff is great as the gangster Shaw and Bettany adds enough intensity as Inspector Acheson.
Two plot twists arrive that i saw coming halfway through the film, the film longs to be a Hitchcock thriller but only captures some of the feeling of the great Directors work like,To Catch a Thief.
The Tourist is best reserved for a Sunday afternoon when it arrives on DVD in a few months then pop in To Catch a Thief and compare the two, then you will see what the makers of The Tourists were striving for.
