Which Marvel movie released in 2014 do you think is the underdog?

you mean like in, the movie I have the least interest in or the movie that might be a surprise hit?

The one that is at a disadvantage and people expect to lose.

In that case: TAS2
awful first movie, totally uncharismatic lead actor with ridiculous There's-something-about-Mary hairdo and the reboot stigma. won't make much at the cinemas

Captain America: Winter Soldier. Based on the fact that I've noticed less chatter about this movie than the other three.

GoTG will have the most amount of work to do outside of America, its just not that big a name compared to the other three at the moment.

1) Awful compared to SM3? lol.

2) Andrew uncharismatic compared to Tobey Maguire? lol.

3) and the reboot stigma will be less a factor the second movie. Most of that stigma was due to re-visiting the origin story.

ASM2 has a way better costume, more interesting villains, no origin story, better release date, more star power, better experienced director, no Avenger/TDKR competition, etc.

800 m WW should be easy enough and the other movies will be lucky to come close to 700 m.

GotG is the biggest wildcard.

We have no idea if it will be received like Star Wars or Howard the Duck.

The others should fly past 200 m domestic.

Agreed 100%. Plus, it has no recognition with the general public.

of course not. but compared to a decent movie, yes, it was awful. I don't get your point though. do I have to compare the quality of a movie to the worst possible movie available. Is Green Lantern a good movie just because compared to Dungeon Siege it is still better? was Matrix 3 a good movie just because Batman & Robin was even worse?

2) Andrew uncharismatic compared to Tobey Maguire? lol.
yes. Andrew is a uncharismatic brat even compared to Maguire.

Guardians of the Galaxy without a doubt

lol

GOTG, no one I know even know if it or what it is.

Spidey will sell itself, it's freaking Spider-Man for christs sakes, people are aware of X-Men and Cap mostly due to Avengers so its GOTG that has the biggest job to do.

2011: First Class
2012: Avengers (no one was going "lol dis gon bomb" but nobody expected it to be as good or as successful as it was
2013: The Wolverine
2014: I really don't know. My bets are on either DOFP or TASM2. GOTG has a very big chance of being good, same with Cap 2. Fox is slowly gaining back good will but people still think DOFP will suck, likewise with TASM2. So either of them probably

Neither did Star Wars.

And I think you're seriously overestimating the "recognition" which the general public had with Iron Man. They didn't make that first movie a success because of the vague knowledge that most of them had that Iron Man was a pre-existing comic character.

Big Hero Six - It didn't even make the list.

yes. Andrew is a uncharismatic brat even compared to Maguire.

I compared ASM to anther Spider-man movie.

Is Matrix Reloaded decent when compared to Revolutions. I'd say so.

Maguire was a block of wood. Garfield reading the phone book would've been more fun than any monotone wisecrack from him.

Guardians of the Galaxy.

Regardless of anyone's quality expectations for the other 3, they WILL make a tidy profit unless something goes unexpectedly wrong for one of them. But GotG could end up being a great movie and still fail at the box office, as it's the first Marvel flick to not be riding on a name brand hero, also the first one set in space, no hugely recognizable A-listers, etc., making it Marvel's biggest gamble to date. It could also be a runaway hit, who knows. It's a total wildcard. Which, right now, kinda automatically makes it the underdog of this group, imo.

I'd rank it like this (number 1 being the underdog 2014):

1. GotG
2. Cap 2
3. X-Men: DoFP

4. TASM2

Star Wars never opened against 50 shades has it? :o

Yeah, I'd say TASM2 is in no way "the" or even "an" underdog. Considering it's predecessor made $750mil. GotG is the clear outlier.

Yeah, I don't see how any of the other movies can be considered "underdogs."

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is a sequel to a movie that pulled in $752 million and is about Spider-Man, one of the most popular superheroes ever.

X-Men: Days of Future Past is the 7th entry in the X-Men franchise produced by Fox, which has so far pulled in nearly $2 billion.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a sequel to a movie which made $368 million and which stars a member of the Avengers. Just as a Post Avengers wave lifted Iron Man 3 to a $1.2 billion take, nearly doubling what Iron Man 2 made, Captain America: The Winter Soldier will likely also benefit from interest generated from seeing him in action in Avengers.

Guardians of the Galaxy is definitely the underdog in this scenario. Hopefully things will come together and it'll turn into a major hit.

TASM2 and DoFP will easily battle it out for the top spot (750-850 m range) while the two Marvel Studio properties will battle it out for the bottom (500-650 m range). My expectations for Guardians have skyrocketed this past week.

Let's just hope they are all high quality.
