The Wachowskis' Ninja Assassin

Or maybe I'm just an honest citizen who gets a little miffed at people who scoff and knowingly break the law.

LOL filmmaker.

so every song you've ever listened to online was purchased by you?

give me a break.

:whatever:

How much CG blood is too much CG blood? I like the movie, I did, but the story was a cluster****. Rain did suprisingly well, for being a somewhat stoic character he had a lot of charisma. 7.5/10

Just saw it.

Thank God James McTeague isn't getting to do Superman.

LOL.

But I would've pefered NO CGI blood....but I can see why it worked here. It was very stylized.

it really makes me think about this: How would Jame McTeague fair without the Wachowskis?

I dont know really. I wouldnt blame him. He didnt write it. The story is what made it so god awful. I liked the look of it, James did fine there. The acting was as good as it could've been with such an awful script.

V-For Vendetta was great. Only thing the Bro's did was write.

was it THAT bad?

I've heard it was a missed opportunity of a lifetime.

I saw them fine. Maybe because they're Ninjas, and they kill in the dark. :o

I thought it worked.

just got back from it and i'm pretty disappointed even knowing not to expect much from the acting and story. all i wanted were kick ass fight sequences and even though it definitely had memorable moments, it just wasn't as kick ass as i was hoping it would be. part of that is because it was simply TOO dark in certain shots, part of it was because they used too much shaky cam, and most was because of too many close shots or quick cuts (like many movies fall victim to). i probably enjoyed a total of 10 minutes of this movie, which is pretty bad.

it's sad because i was really looking forward to this movie and i wanted it to open doors for martial arts flicks as well as Asian actors in lead roles. unfortunately, it's not that great of a martial arts flick and the main character wasn't even 2D. i think i'm gonna go watch a Tony Jaa movie just so i can feel better about the state that martial arts movies are in.

if they are gonna use dark cinematography, then use stable shots. If they do shaky, then use more lighting. There must be a compromise because cinema, after all, is a visual medium.

yeah...the shaky cam with the darkness was too much to handle a lot of the time. combine that with quickly cut shots and it makes a mess.

A few of the fight scenes were crap simply because it was harder than hell to see what was going on. I'd heard fight noise then a splash of CG blood would appear

I enjoyed this movie, but I was disappointed that it wasn't as cool as I was hoping a movie about Ninjas would be. It was basically a big-budget exploitasian flick that had some fun, but ultimately wasn't as cool as I was expecting it would be. Some of the fights in it were good, but a lot of them were horribly shot, using closeup shake-o-vision at its worst and then covering the screen with CG gore to hide the bad choreography. Even GI Joe managed to have decent Ninja fight scenes that were well shot with no ambiguity, so for a movie called "Ninja Assassin" to fail to live up to the fights in a movie that's not even primarily about Ninjas is a little saddening. You could re-create some fights in this movie just by going into a dark room, flapping some black cloth in front of a camera, and squirting a ketchup bottle everywhere while violently shaking the camera.

The pacing in the movie was a bit of a mess, too. I was expecting the movie to be about the main Ninja hunting down his former comrades and having awesome fights with them, but it was mostly just flashbacks of his training while the token Westerners provide exposition for things that usually either aren't important or we can figure out on our own. The middle of the movie was a slow mess, and for a movie that's only 1 hour and 38 minutes long that's surprising. For some reason, the story almost reminded me of Beverly Hills Ninja if it were played straight-- and with less character development.

Don't get me wrong, I liked the movie, and I'll probably buy it on Blu-Ray. However, I think that a lot more could have been done with the concept in the right hands, and sadly, even though this is one of the better Ninja movies I've seen, I can't call it the best. It all around wasn't good enough to overcome my nostalgia for the first Ninja Turtles, the fights were too sloppy to beat out GI Joe, and Azumi is just plain all around better-- and what was very disappointing was that Ninja Assassin was not as fun as any of them. :(

Like I said, I liked it, but if you want a definitive Ninja movie, you're probably still going to find yourself longing (until I make mine, at least ;)).

What threw me off was this rivalry he had going on with "Big Brother" it just seemed kind of forced. And I could never tell when he was fighting him and I could've sworn he was the one that got nailed by the car, which should've killed him I would think.

Anyways, It was an okay movie. I don't feel cheated cause I got in for free, so yeah, not bad. Could've been so much better though.

My mini review...

What an awful film on every level. Obviously, in a film like this, the only redeeming value would be the action sequences, but it seems that Michael J Fox was the big cheese in the editing room and the lighting during nearly every scene is non-existent. Not to mention the CGI blood should be a cardinal sin for this type of film -- at least when it's executed this poorly -- and even when you can see what's going on, the film looks completely bland, like something you'd probably see go direct-to-dvd. How this cost over $40 million is beyond me.....what a huge disappointment.

2/10

Thats the bit that kind of confused me. All of a sudden Rick Yune is hating and hunting the main character. They should have done something with that relationship.

Wow, talk about being disappointed with others opinions. I loved this flick, it was incredibly entertaining to me, and found it one of the best Ninja themed films I ever seen. It doesn't have an Oscar winning plot, but it doesn't need one.

I swear, most 80's action films like Predator, Terminator, First Blood, and even Alienes wouldn't survive the current fan viewing barometer. Kind of sad.

Um...no!

Aliens and Predator have GREAT plots. While simplistic, they still work, and people DO still love them. (new fans) Aliens has great action, great acting, great characters, and a great story. Predator has a good story, good acting, and great action. Its not ******ed like Ninja Assassin. The plot is beyond stupid. The acting is dreadful. The action is kickass. And I loved the gore, so I did in the end enjoy it. But it still sucked.
