Surely, geeks like us read the newspaper comicstrips all the time. And surely, there are those of them that make us either groan, or shake our heads or whatnot because they are so utterly without humor.

So what in your opinion is the worst of them all?

To thee, I present, Dinette Set. www.thedinetteset.com

Completely lacking in jokes, punchlines, and whatever else you may find funny, The Dinette Set makes Family Circus and Marmaduke look like comedic gold.

Yeah, that's pretty ****ty. I've never read worse.

Cathy. Worst hands down.

Yeah we get it, you are sheltered, unmarried, focused on your weight, "independent" woman. :cmad: Here's a vibrator, that should solve some of your problems.

:wow:
That tripe is what Dilbert would be if he married, lost his job, and put his pet (probably the only funny thing about his strip) up for adoption.

Hmmm, bad comic strips in the funny papers. One that comes to mind is Andy Capp. It's not terrible, but it's way too repetitive. In every scenario, Andy's the desperate/down on his luck husband who just seeks peace, and his old ball and chain is working to make every one of his last moments a living nightmare. (cliche' old married people)

See? It's amusing at first, but not every weekend.

Another one that made me wonder how difficult it is to write this stuff was Hagar the Horrible.
 I'm sure it's funny in a 'you had to be there to get it' sort of way, but if you tell or recite it, it's flat.

I'm not too familiar w/ newer ones, since I don't really read the Weekenders anymore, but I always disliked 'For Better or Worse', 'Doonesbury', and 'Cathy'. Imho, they were written as if they were trying to hard.

Non Sequiturs (always had some witty stuff), Calvin & Hobbes, and Mark Trail were more in the vein of what I liked.

*sigh* good mems. I haven't read any of the latter in a while.

Here's an ex of what Erz's is talking about, and he definitely has a point:

Ugh. Who finds this funny?

If there was a fictional character that needed some, she'd be tops on the list.

I used to look for it in the Saturday paper every week to see if I would ever find one that was funny. I never did. It's not even drawn well. Who did that artist sleep with to get that strip in papers??

Most comic strips are dull and unfunny, I dunno if I could pick a worst.

It's undoubtedly geared towards people who like:

1) Roseanne
2) The View
3) Ben & Jerrys or Haagen-Dazs (eating it straight from the pint carton)
4) Alone time to confront issues and complain about how it's some one else's (usually an unthoughtful male) fault.

all at the same time, or seperately in daily/weekly doses.

Everytime I read Family Circus I get filled with rage. Particularly murderous rage towards Bill Keene. I mean what kind of family names their f**king dog BARFY!!

I think I'd enjoy punching myself in the nuts at least seventeen times, then brand myself with a hot sodering iron, then go watch CINO at least twice and read Bruce Jones's Nightwing within a six hour period than reading the Family Circus

IMO the only actual funny comic strip out there is "Get Fuzzy"

Cathy is married now :o

And Jon is dating Liz too.

I've only loved one comic strip to ever buy a book and that's Calvin and Hobbes.

Ugh, why do you know that? :shame:

Wow. I was going to say Family Circus or The Born Loser (which isn't as bad as FC but still unfunny) but damn, Dinette Set is horrible.

Pearls Before Swine can be pretty good.

Calvin & Hobbes is the greatest comic strip ever created. I used to love Garfield but I think I've grown out of it. But I still love Calvin & Hobbes.

Yeah, I agree. It kind of reminds me of a less-vulgar Neurotically Yours (the home of Foamy the Squirrel).

Because I read the funnies. And let me tell you, Cathy has gotten EVEN LAMER now that she is married. All they do is play up on male sterotypes with him.
