A week ago I was talking to someone on my friends list about setting up media servers to stream videos from your computer to your PS3, and he didn't realize you could. Then just now in another thread we were talking about setting up Linux, so I thought I'd start a list of things you can do on your PS3.

Feel free to add to the list since I'm sure I don't even know half of what you can do with it lol. This could be a good thread for those new to the PS3 tho and wanting to find out what it can do.

1.) Set up Linux. This will allow you to set up emulators, watch videos and java the PS3 OS wouldn't allow you to watch. There are many benefits to installing an OS like Unbuntu on your PS3.

2.) Set up a Media Server (with a program like Winamp) on your computer. This will allow you to grab pics, music, or movies from your computer and copy them to your PS3.

3.) Copy music disks. Self explanitory, highlight your music CD in your tray, triangle, copy.

4.) Use the Sixaxis on your computer. There are drivers out to do this. Also when using Linux on your PS3 this is very helpful as you can play emulators as they can treat the sixaxis as a USB controller (or if you dig around you can use it's Bluetooth wireless capabilities, but I haven't figured that out yet).

5.) Install bigger hard drives easily. You can easily hook up an external hard drive to your PS3 for increased storage, but Sony also added a very easy to get to area at the bottom of your PS3 for very easy access to the hard drive so you can switch it.

6.) Backup save data onto your PSP memory stick, or even your ipod (not fully sure, but I've heard you can).

7.) Turn on, access, and turn off your PS3 with your PSP from anywhere in the world that has an internet connection.

8.) Stream your PS3 XMB to your PSP via remote play. I'm sure most of you know this, but just in case someone new joins and wonders. By doing this you can play PS1 games in your BR drive on your PSP. You can either do this pretty much anywhere in the house (FFVII while on the toilet?), or anywhere the PSP can connect to the net. You can also stream certain PS3 games such as Pixeljunk Monsters, and also Bionic Commando I believe.

9.) PS store PS1 classics. Since I'm talking about PSP, (again something most of you know), you can download PS1 classics to your PS3 of course. However the classics also are downloadable to your PSP. Meaning that $9.99 Castlevania can be on your PS3 hard drive, and be played while on the road with your PSP.

Seriously, the PSP and PS3 are a great combo.

.
An iPod is nothing more than a portable hard drive. You treat it just like an external or any other portable flash drive. Works in the same way on the PS3

More things to add to your list:

10. The PS3 comes with a web browser, so you can browse the internet from within your system. Can be very helpful if you don't have access to a PC and/or your PC is in another room and you want to check out something real quick.

11. The PS3 is bluetooth enabled so you can connect most bluetooth devices to it. That means your cell phone headsets will work and you can also use BT keyboards and mouses

i just the other day started using ubuntu, and i'm still lost as all hell... what can you do with linux on your ps3?

pretty much anything other than play new games. there are issues like since adobe are *****es the flash player is **** so most streaming videos won't work. programs generally aren't optimized or compiled for cell so they just use the ppc part. so your not even using a 6th of the power of the system.

another feature of some ps3s is SACD playback, which i've never used.

First off check your repository deal. Go to Add/Remove programs, then check thru that list. Unbuntu comes preloaded with many, many programs given out by the community. My SNES, DS, and NES emulators were all found in that and installed in seconds.

One of the bright points about Unbuntu (linux in general) is everything is straight forward. Use a terminal, type something like (assuming you have the files) "sudo apt-get install mupen64" or something to that effect and you install a file. It can do a lot, but instead of clicking a zip file you have to tell it to in a terminal sometimes.

Under "Places", then "Home" is your main folder, it's like my documents for windows where you can create new folders to do things. Also where the PS3 OS can't grab zips, read gifs, upgrade video codecs, etc, Linux can as long as someone has written it.

I just found out that you can play videos saved on a DVD on the PS3. I have several DVDs with tv shows and movies, I've downloaded/and or that I have backed up on DVDs in avi format and didnt know I could just pop them in the system and play them like that. Beats putting them on my PC and having to stream them through my wireless router

You can also copy them from the DVD to the PS3 Hard Drive as well.
