so i just got word from my mom on the phone that my dad is in critical condition. he got into an accident on his motorcycle this morning. a man on his bike was cycling in the middle of the road instead of the side of the road and what happens when he failed to see who was behind him? yeah...an effing accident happens because he did not see who was behind him and failed to move out of his way. My dad was about to go into the left lane and what does the other guy do? he moves into the left lane as well... idiot. im so pissed off right now. You know, I'm more pissed off than I am sad for what happened but I do feel sorry for my dad because he is my dad. What ticks me off more is that the guy actually blames my dad for what happened. What an a-hole. and also, the guy walks freely...because he wasn't hurt that badly.

Um, sorry about your dad, but here, cyclists are permitted to ride in the road along with cars. It may have not been classy for the guy to blame your father, but from the sounds of it, if it were here, your dad would be at fault. I'm not sure what state you live in - or if you live in the states at all - but I'm pretty sure it's legal most places. And driving on the side of the road is more dangerous than in the middle of the lane. There's less likely of a chance for a driver to see them if they're off on the side.

Anyway, 'hopefully he makes a speedy recovery. Blame isn't what's important now. Life is.

Yeah...but still... what happened shouldn't have happened. If I was the cyclist, I wouldn't be biking in the middle of the road. Do I wanna die? Not that way. The guy was lucky enough that he was hardly injured where as my dad broke some ribs, his left lung got bruised and he fractured his collar bone from what I gather...so he's a bit of a mess as it is. thanks for the wishes for a speedy recovery. I am seeing him soon in about 12 hours from now...

In the US bicycles are allowed to be in the road along with cars. If therre's no room in the side, it is safer to just be in the middle and take up the whole lane so drivers can see you Still, it's shocking that the cyclist would not be able to hear a MOTORCYCLE coming up behind him! Making any sudden moves when you can hear an oncoming vehicle/rider is just idiotic.

I hope your dad makes a complete and swift recovery. And at least you live in Canada - in the US he'd probably have to sue the cyclist to get medical funds and at least in CA, the driver/rider in the back is always at fault so he'd be SOL.

Sorry to hear about your dad, hopefully he will make a good recovery very soon.

and I am amazed that there are places where bicycles are allowed to ride down the middle of the road, I've never seen that here in the UK. I always thought there was a minimum speed limit cars had to go at, that would of course exclude bicycles from being in the same lane as cars.
