Well, we can be sure that this movie will bomb, even if it's really a great one (I can't wait for it). There are two reasons: A) There will be way bigger sharks like I Am Legend or Golden Compass, which will get the money, and B) it's not a box office type of movie.
So lets hope Academy won't lets us down with their political views and will give this film at least one nomination.
Can Tim Burton direct real drama? Weve seen him deftly handle comedic roles and all manner of oddness very well over the years. But this isnt THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS (which he co-directed with an animation legend) or EDWARD SCISSORHANDS (the closest anyone has come to crying for a Burton directed character at the end). SWEENEY TODD is serious work. Can he make us FEEL the tragedy and pathos of Sweeney? If that doesnt come through, the ending of the movie wont move people the way the stage musical has for almost three decades.

I take it he's never seen Big Fish.![]()
Or BATMAN RETURNS, for that matter...
johnny depp and tim burton together will 99% guarantee box office hit, even if it is a musical.
its a tired thing to say but its true
actually im sure the fact that Depp is singing will actually help it.
Did Ed Wood make money?
Were Sleepy Hollow's box offfice numbers higher than it's budget?
Even Corpse Bride didn't make so much.
No, but it was one of `94s most critically acclaimed movies and won many awards including an Oscar for Martin Landau's performance as Bela.
It made over 200 million worldwide.
True, but it earned Tim Burton his first Oscar nomination.
I was talking about domestic numbers. And did I say anything about awards? No, I meant box office only.

sometimes these movies make their money back through DVD sales![]()
Again, I am talking about domestic Box Office numbers.
I don't see Todd making more in the BO than Sleepy Hollow did.
Are you considering the following it has from Broadway?
sourceIt's finally here! After months of anticipation, Warner Bros. Pictures--which is handling overseas distribution for SWEENEY TODD--has announced a release date for trailers for the movie. According to their press release, "[E]xciting new footage from the highly anticipated first quarter 2008 worldwide release of SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET" will be released via satellite feed in Europe on October 4th between 2300-2315 GMT, and at the same time in Latin America. The Australian release is October 5th, 0900-0915 EST. Paramount is handling the U.S. theatrical release of SWEENEY TODD, and they have not yet announced when the trailer will be available in the U.S., but we're hoping it will be up on the official website soon after its European release.
