he's MUCH better!!:wow:
George Hearn? He's great. But I don't really think he's all that much better than Depp in terms of performance as much as he is different. I like Depp's darker, more sinister, subtler take on the "You sir, how 'bout a shave?" lines. You don't have to shout it all to make it scary, and I've always preferred a brooding madness for Sweeney.

But as far as voice, yeah, Hearn's got the greater voice. It's a deep, rich baritone and he's constantly been in demand because of it. But for the part of Sweeney, I've always preferred voices that weren't quite so... excellent. I like my Sweeney's to have unique sounds that have a touch of weariness to them (Len Cariou, the original Sweeney, has the perfect Sweeney sound, IMO).

Here's a comparison of three of the acclaimed Sweeneys alongside Depp in their performance of the line, so you can hear a variety of approaches to the role (first Len Cariou, then George Hearn, then Michael Cerveris, then Johnny Depp):

Johnny's voice doesn't do it for me. Neither does his look. George Hearn and Len Cariou make me want to run and hide. Depp doesn't do that for me.

Yeah, I think out of the four, Depp sounds better--no offense meant to the other three, but the subtler way of saying the line gave real menance to me. It could also be that I first heard it from Depp, so that might be a slight bias, I dunno. :o

johnny is definatly not the best...

i actually like johnny depp much better then the other singers, its more realistic..the others wouldn't fit well in this type of motion picture.

I don't see anything more "realistic" about it. I think Len Cariou's approach would have fit a film version just fine.

Hearn is actually my favorite Sweeney, but still, yeah, the only way he's objectively better is the fact he's a much better singer. I prefer his Sweeney that's crazed from despair, but I'm interested in Depp's take as he comes off more that he just snapped into being psychotic. It's a lot more sardonic than you normally hear.

Well, I wouldn't judge all of Depp's approach just from that one snippet. That one segment is pretty sardonic, but as far as I can tell, he looks pretty despairing throughout the trailer.

Even towards the end of "Epiphany," it looks like he literally breaks down. I get that from the shot later in the trailer, where he's fallen down on both knees and is crying to the heavens. Given the shape of his mouth, it seems like he's just sung the "And I'm full of joy!!!" so I'm wagering he actually falls to his knees during the lines, "And my Lucy lies in ashes... and I'll never see my girl again..."

I just mean relative to Hearn, I don't mean he's just a happy go-lucky crazy serial killer.

Depps is the best there, IMO. For one, he's not screaming, yet its still menacing, as many have already said. When he says "I want you bleeders," it actually sounds kind of demonic. And his singing of "I will have vengeance. I will have salvation." is just better than the other three.
Not really a fan of musicals, but every so often I find one enjoyable. I look foreward to this.

Lol, nevermind. Misunderstanding on my part.

...
Tim Burton is looking worse and worse. He needs a weed whacker for that hair.

Is Todd bald in the latest theater version?
Well, he was when Michael Cerveris played him. But not so with all the Todds in the revival. David Hess is currently starring, and he has hair.

And his singing of "I will have vengeance. I will have salvation." is just better than the other three.
How so? I actually think that's where he shows up weaker to Cariou and Hearn. He lacks the vocal power to make the rafters shake, which is a shame. Now, I do like Depp's sound, and it brings something new for what it lacks, but I wouldn't call it superior to what the others did.

I've never heard about the play, so looking at the film, I'm not sure what to think right now.

It's definitely Burton-esque through and through.

I've seen Michael Cerveris in a few shows, but he will still always be Tommy to me. I saw him in that show 3 times. He's such a terrific actor.

I dont know, its sort of a less is more thing. The others kind of sounded off to me.

Well first of all, you have to keep in mind they're on stage that's got a lot to do with the fact they're shouting. Also keep in mind that the lines are supposed to be delivered very strangely, they're in time and are off beat. It's very strange, my roommate actually has the original score so I've looked at it. Depp isn't doing that, so if you're not used to it it would probably sound better because it's more like normal speaking.

And if you like his delivery of lines better that's fine, he's an actor as much as any of them, but you can't honestly think his singing is better.

is this going to be a musical? or is depp just singing a little in that one scene?

anyone else notice not only is the Jack Sparrow voice there, obviously, but the first half of the trailer music is the same music from the AWE trailer
