Given the tragic event of at least 30 dead in Virginia, shot dead at a University, is it time for stricter gun legislation, possibly an all out ban on certain fire arms?

I'm watching a feed from BBC news, and this mayor woman was talking about how everytime her and other people try to push through was she considers to be light legislation, the NRA screams and rants that she's trying to take away their guns.

But I think gun legislation is the key. At the very least, a person should be shown to be mentally sound before they buy a gun. And NO ONE needs automatic weapons.

What do you think?

I don't get why any rational person needs to own an assault rifle.

An elimination or stricter regulations at those gun shows.

I know I shouldn't own one that's for sure. :cmad:

No civilian needs an uzi or a 50 cal rifle, that being said I don't think that banning all guns is the answer either.

*sigh*

A guy who's prepared and willing to blow 30 odd innocent people, and then himself, away, is not going to be deterred if he finds out there's a stiff fine and jail time if you're caught owning a gun.
Mmmkay?
:whatever:

Right here in a Washingston state, last year, a guy went on a spree at a mall and it was a private citizen who had a permit that brought down the guy before he shot more innocent people.

:o

It hasn't changed anything whatsoever here. People still get shot, and when they do, they can't defend themselves.

Nearly twenty-five years ago, so guy tried to attack my mother on union street, not far from where I live now. She whacked him across the face with the gun she carried in her jacket, and then put it to his crotch and told him that she couldn't remember whether or not she'd loaded it. The guy pissed himself and passed out.

I don't have that luxury, but stats show that I'm ten times as likely to be attacked at gunpoint today than when my mother was my age. Somehow, making guns illegal has resulted in there being more guns in the country than ever before.

It won't work. My parents lost their wedding presents to each other. I never even got to hold the gun that my grandfather bought for me when I was born, because I was six years old when the legislation passed. The only thing any kind of ban will do is raise the value of guns on the black market.

Your parents bought each other guns as wedding presents and your grandfather bought you a gun when you were born? Does anyone in your family resemble this guy?

:cwink: I kid, I kid.

I agree that an outright ban is not the answer...but I also think there needs to be some kind of regulation. Again I ask, why does any civilian need an assault rifle?

Guns are illegal in DC and we all know the crime rate here.

What's the old addage? I think it's something like, "Guns don't kill people, dangerous minorities do."

Some of you are kinda talking out of your bums.

There is a bit of a gun problem in London, yes? There is NO gun problem in Belfast, right? The gun problem would be ALOT worse if it were easier to get guns legally. As it is, crooks have to resort to buying replicas and getting them converted. Imagine what it would be like if they could just get their guns from a guy who got loads of them LEGALLY. Imagine how much gun crime would ****ing spread throughout the UK.

Use your brains. Gun legislation is a BIG factor into why this **** keeps happening in the US. Time for stricter gun leglisation. What does it take to get through to you people? 50 dead? 100? Nothing shocks you people.

The problem with banning guns is that the law abiding citizens have no way to protect themselves while the criminals that don’t give a **** about the law have them. That being said I don't think anyone outside of the police or military should have a machine gun or anything like that.

Do you know how hard it would be to get rid of every single gun in the US?

Looking at the amount of kids that shoot themselves after finding Daddy's gun, and other such accidents which are actually very high last time I looked at the statistics, might change your mind about "law abiding citizens" being allowed to hold guns. I think you are far more likely to have an accident with a gun in the house than it is likely that you would ever get to use the gun on an invader into the house.

Both sides are faulty for assuming what applies in London or Belfast applies in the United States. See, people have this problem of being...and I know its crazy...but individuals who are unique. Not everyone will react the same way.

I'm not suggesting an outright ban. But I definately think there needs to be more effort into controlling what guns are available and who they're available to, and how easily.

There was a programme here, and in other parts of the UK, where there were bins for knives for people to dump. And it worked, thousands upon thousands of knives were dumped. Knife crime dropped.

Thank God we don't have a gun problem.

Use your brain.
I just told you about a public citizen here in Washington that saved untold lives because he was a man with a gun.

Yeah, legislation is a BIG factor in why people smoke so much marijuana, do so much heroin, sexually assault so many people and kill so many people.
If only we had some strict laws against those activities.

:o

They don't let the crooks buy guns, dumbass. They never did. My parents had guns because they were both law abiding, police-checked civil servants. Gun crime was not all that high in Britan before they banned guns. Look at it now.

Besides, no gun problem in Belfast? How long have you been living there? When I was living in that heap someone got shot twice a week.
