Four-time Academy Award nominee Bradley Cooper has signed on to headline Deeper, an upcoming science fiction thriller scripted by Max Landis. TheWrap has the news, reporting that Cooper is a lock for the leading role in the film
, which will represent Hungarian director Kornel Mundruczo’s follow-up to his acclaimed 2014 horror drama White God.

Described by Landis as being the sum total of “Birdman + The Shining + Locke + 2001 + The Descent + Miyazaki,” Deeper will follow Cooper as Eddie Breen, a former astronaut who embarks on a deep sea mission to a newly discovered oceanic trench that just might be the the single deepest point on the planet (in real life, that’s the Pacific Ocean’s Mariana Trench). As Breen heads deeper and deeper, he begins to face “mysterious forces,” described as being both “physical and psychological.”
Bradley Cooper starred last year in big-screen projects like Cameron Crowe’s Aloha, John Wells’ Burnt and David O. Russell’s Joy. On the small screen, Cooper returned for both Netflix‘s Wet Hot American Summer: The First Day of Camp and for CBS‘ Limitless, continuing the world of the 2011 feature film of the same name. This year, Cooper already made a quick cameo in Dan Trachtenberg’s 10 Cloverfield Lane and can soon be seen starring opposite Jonah Hill and Miles Teller in Todd Phillips‘ War Dogs.
Max Landis himself is attached to produce Deeper alongside Phantom Four’s David Goyer and Kevin Turen and Addictive Pictures’ Russell Ackerman and John Schoenfelder.

Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot is in talks to join Bradley Cooper in Deeper, according to Deadline. Written by Max Landis, the science fiction thriller will be directed by Hungarian director Kornel Mundruczo (White God).

I have seen elsewhere folks talking about Cooper playing an astronaut. That is false. Gal potential character is called Marion.

Idris Elba In Talks to Star in Max Landis Supernatural Thriller 'Deeper' (Exclusive)

The actor is in negotiations to star in the supernatural sci-fi thriller being made by MGM.

Baltasar Kormakur, the filmmaker behind survival dramas Everest and Adrift, is sitting behind the camera for the feature, which has a script written by Max Landis.

Deeper is supernatural thriller that centers on a disgraced astronaut, to be played by Elba, who is on a deep-sea dive exploring a newly discovered trench but soon finds himself confronted by a sinister and dangerous force. The tone has been described as being similar to recent hits Gravity and The Martian.

Elba’s casting brings the storied project one step closer to actually going in front of cameras. MGM paid seven figures to acquire the script in 20126 from the high-priced scribe Landis. The project also had Bradley Cooper and Gal Gadot attached to star and Kornel Mundruczo, the Hungarian director behind White God, attached to direct. However, one by one the players fell off and MGM was forced to decide whether to let it go or rebuild. It chose the latter.

David Goyer, Kevin Turen, Russell Ackerman, John Schoenfelder and Landis are producing the project.

Thrilled to see Cruise and Liman back together, and on a horror film no less! This may be the closest we ever get to Cruise in Mountains of Madness that we were denied.

Landis is a big red flag, though, but I have faith in Cruise's project selection at this point that it's workable or will be rewritten to a higher standard.
