Will Smith, Joel Edgerton to Star in David Ayer’s Cop Thriller ‘Bright’

When you're spending 30m on Stranger Things episodes, this is what happens.
That particular money seems ok to spend? There's too much dross on Netflix. I think they'd be better served combining budgets for some shows to get a few more shows like ST that continuously attract new subs almost on their own and add much more value to a back catalogue. Netflix have fixed the quantity issue (maybe too aggressively) and should focus on quality now IMO. When you have over a certain number of hours of stuff on your platform, many more additional hours don't add as much to the attractiveness of the overall package compared to specific notable series (IMO).

On the plus side, it means Max Landis gets no more money for this project, so I'm delighted.
Good.

I do think they are going to phase out high budget movies. I imagine they will see shows with higher budgets as better investments

Not surprised they aren't moving forward with this. It's been 4 years since the first one and not many are clamoring for a sequel. Plus there has been very little public movement on the project in those 4 years.
If it was a true success it would've gotten a sequel. Look at Extraction.

I also am wondering if Netflix regretting that $200 mill investment for The Gray Man. That's the most expensive movie ever for Netflix

Yeah, I’d definitely agree with that. High budget shows that make a mark are the most efficient investment for them IMO. Films just aren’t long enough. You can binge the whole MCU for eg in the time it takes to watch one top quality show that has been around a good while. A lot better to have 20 shows on the level of ST eventually rather than 50 big films that can be seen in the first month. Films like Red Notice feel pretty worthless for the amount spent.

To be more directly on topic though, I will say I enjoyed Bright to some extent, even though I wouldn’t be rewatching it (and to get back off topic lol, something like ST I will probably rewatch some of it every few years).

Netflix just needs to make more better movies and shows. They are creating a lack of incentive to keep the service, even if there's a few shows that are popular/acclaimed like Stranger Things or Orange is the New Black, The Crown; it's just so few, hence maybe why people subscribe and cancel around these shows. Most of their originals and bought stuff is disposable. As for their library of other movies, you can watch anywhere else with better libraries like HBO Max. I'd rather watch HBO Max with an older but better backlog than Netflix where I could just buy The Irishman on criterion. Netflix needed to build a good backlog of original movies/shows like WB had for decades and for the most part they've failed. It wasn't like Netflix had to overcome the stigma of luring filmmakers to streaming, as House of Cards was a hit out of the gate and it went forward there.

Not to get reactionary, but the loss of subscribers could mean their decisions are catching up. It could be a portent to something worse in streaming if these streamers like Amazon and Apple if they don't get their acts together. Streaming is here to stay, but if they want to stick around and compete, you can't just burn through billions for "content" sake.

Forgot about Red Notice...they're filming those 2 sequels back to back. And if the first one was 200 mill, the sequels probably will cost more too

Yeah I've been sayng for years if any service is gonna have issues in the streaming wars, it's Netflix. Netflix if they get rid of all the licensed content (which a lot of it is gone now) has a terrible library. They have some great shows (Stranger Things, You, Narcos/Narcos Mexico) but that's not enough.

They know how to go viral but lasting impression for most of their stuff is so little.

And they just throw things at the wall. They need to focus on releasing like 12 good or at least memorable movies a year. Instead of like 100 and maybe 2 of those are remembered.

I already cancelled Netflix but will have to resign up for ST4. And in the 2 months I think since I unsubscribed I haven't missed it a bit honestly.

I can appreciate the investment of money in original things, but they've been spending pretty recklessly on the wrong things mostly. I didn't see Red Notice, but it looked like crap and it seems pretty forgettable. Their track record on shows is ok in the grander scheme of things, but I agree, invest more in making quality movies with sensible budgets that leave larger impressions as well as shows. They can already attract filmmakers with creative freedom and money, just be more particular.

We're getting at the point in time where these decisions matter as opposed to seven years ago we weren't thinking about it. At the very least, those numbers shows these giant streamers aren't invulnerable. In the next few years, the Wild West of streaming could be coming to an end. Things will become more competitive, and I truly believe what wins out in the end is quality.

Oh wow, didn't realise they had greenlit a sequel, never mind 2 lol. I don't think they will be around too long if they continue like that. When you spend that kind of money on a film that will have no box office, it needs to be something that will stand out and stay significant into the next decade plus like a Goodfellas or a Gladiator, marquee titles in other words that can help sell a service on their own merits. Red Notice... ain't that.
