Sci-Fi Tom Cruise to Headline Science Fiction Thriller Deeper

Described by Landis as being the sum total of Birdman + The Shining + Locke + 2001 + The Descent + Miyazaki
There's something both hilarious and infuriating about this hack describing his script as a combination of half a dozen other movies.

Landis sucks and Liman is very hit and miss but his work with Cruise has been good. So hopefully this will be something worth keeping an eye out for.

POSITIVITY!

Good to see that Cruise is getting an age-appropriate love interest. :o

More intriguing is Deeper. I’ve heard that Ana de Armas is poised to join Tom Cruise in this undersea supernatural film that Doug Liman will direct. De Armas is the new wrinkle here; they’ve been photographed together recently, and I’m told they are doing the diving training required for the project

This one is expensive, in the $200 million range most likely, and it proved too rich for Warner Bros’ blood. But Cruise crushed the Croisette this week with the final installment of Mission: Impossible The Final Reckoning, a film expected to do $70 million or more on its five-day opening weekend, hopefully on a blockbuster path. De Armas also has momentum, as her John Wick spinoff Ballerina is tracking at $40 million-plus.

While he, Liman and McQuarrie have plans to shoot a narrative film in space with cooperation from NASA and SpaceX, I’m told Cruise would like to make Deeper next and it’s not a question of if, but where he decides to make it. No comment from his camp.

Under the sea eh?

We all know what we want to see......underwater running by Tom Cruise.

So… is it an underwater film set on another planet? I’m confused as to why an astronaut would be exploring the depths of an ocean otherwise.

I mean, this has James Cameron written all over it (no offence to Doug Liman).

And Cameron will actually take Cruise down to uncharted trenches to film it for real!

In Landis' original spec script the main character is an oceanographer who was a former NASA astronaut trainee. I think it's just a matter of the original source of the info trying to be more succinct in a description, but being misleading in their choice of words.

That's all assuming McQuarrie and Cruise haven't totally revamped the general plot of the film since coming aboard.

Gotcha. That makes more sense. Anyway, could be fun.
