Ok i know most on here may not be a big fan of these movies but i was raised up on 3 forms of movie entertainment. That consisted of Harryhausen movies and the godzilla and king kong movies but my best form of movie education was westerns. John Wayne, Glenn Ford and Clint Eastwood was my enjoyment as a kid. I thought i would make a thread to see what was everyones top 20 favorite movie westerns are. May they be westerns on the big screen or made for tv western movies. I do except mini series westerns as movies.

1 Lonesome Dove.
2 Unforgiven.
3 Rio Bravo.
4 Chisum.
5 The Missing.
6 Little Big Man.
7 Last Stand At Saber River.
8 The Magnificent Seven.
9 Crossfire Trail.
10 The Outsider.
11 Silverado.
12 True Grit.
13 High Plains Drifter.
14 Open Range.
15 The Gambler.
16 Conagher.
17 Hang Em High.
18 The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.
19 Sentennial.
20 Buffalou Soldiers.

I'm kind of odd in terms of how I like Westerns, because I love the aesthetics (Wide open spaces, sandy streets, shootouts, train robberies) and find it to be an extremely cinematic genre, but the stories and the moral viewpoints of the films have never appealed to me. The morality tale aspect of the Western, despite the fact that it's often a very FUN morality tale, is something that seems inherently black and white, and therefore inherently uninteresting.

I still love the look of the pictures though.

I don't have 20 (heck, I don't even have ten) but I have a few:D

1. Kill Bill Vol. 2 (spaghetti western's count?)
2. Unforgiven
3. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
4. Shane
5. The Misfits

The only problem i ever had with some westerns is the native american story telling in some movies for i am a quarter Souix. I really like native american movie as well. The Missing was a really great movie but i was never offended by the film. I like the western movies best that did not include alot of i massive ndian killing in it. I liked westerns that kinda had the one indian that was a respected scout. And friend to the lead character like in Cahill U.S Marshal and Big Jake. Even though i am not sure if either actors were indians.

I have alot more than twenty but I"ll give my top 10 for now:

My Favorite John Wayne Western's:

1.Searchers
2.Fort Appache
3.Stage Coach
4.She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
5.The Angel and the Badman
6.Rio Lobo
7.Red River
8.The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.
9.Sons of Katie Elder
10. Rio Bravo

Once Upon a Time in the West is the greatest, why isnt it even in your top 20?

Now, spaghetti westerns I like. The visual awesomeness surpasses any morality qualms I may have.

No High Noon?? What an outrage!

The Searchers
Red River
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Rio Bravo
High Noon
Shane
For A Few Dollars More
A Fistful of Dollars
Once Upon a Time in the West
The Big Country
Unforgiven
Open Range
Tombstone
My Darling Clementine
Stagecoach
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
The Magnificent Seven

Those are my favorites. Not quite 20, but I haven't seen enough to warrant 20 of 'em, although I have seen many westerns.

I hate to admit, but I haven't seen a great deal of Westersn, but of the ones I've seen High Noon takes the cake. It's a fantastic piece of cinema. Runner-up would be Tombstone.

Wow....nobody has "The Outlaw Josey Wales" one of the best westerns made:up:

I like El Dorado, because Mitchum is in it, though.

The only Clint Eastwood western I've seen in full is that one with a fake nun. Definitely #21 on my list.

Two Mules For Sister Sarah was its name i do believe. I have never finished that western for some odd reason. Its just too bad that John Wayne and Clint Eastwood never was able to do a western together.

I watched a few of Eastwood westerns but i liked him in his Dirty Harry movies and Any Which Way But Loose. That period of Eastwood films is where i got hooked. I watched maybe four of his westerns. I was mainly a Duke fan.

Is That the movie with Charles Brosnan. Meaning Once Upon A Time In the West. If that is the westerns name then thank you. When i was making this thread i could not remember its name. I have seen maybe over 60 western movies and so its hard for me to recall all of them by name.

In no particular order:

Unforgiven
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Stagecoach
High Noon
Cheyenne Autumn
Fistfull of Dollars
Tombstone
Blazing Saddles

hmmm I do love those olsens... are they legal yet?

it is impossible, and blasphemous, to list the best western movies and NOT have good, the bad, and the ugly on that list! it's not only one of the best westerns of all time, but one of the best films of all time!
