A new interpretation of the classic Rainbow Six, the tough-as-nails tactical shooter that asked gamers to carefully plan out the nuance of a breach like a choreographed dance, is in the works, a source familiar with the unannounced Ubisoft shooter tell Kotaku.

We've also heard that the game will in many ways be a departure from the sameness found in Rainbow Six: Vegas and its sequel, and a return to what helped separate the shooter from others of its ilk.

It's unclear if the in-development game will be shown at E3.

The original Rainbow Six is more tactical and focused on stealth than on weapons. Before each mission, in those early games, players were asked to view a briefing and then build a team, pick their weapons and equipment and finally create waypoints that the secondary members of the team would follow. Once the mission started, players had only control of one team member at a time.

Rainbow Six will be a far more story-driven game than previous iterations of the Tom Clancy branded title. The game is meant to take a step in a different direction, telling a bigger, much more gritty cinematic story than previous versions of the game.

In this still-to-be-titled Rainbow Six, players will be tasked with stopping a homegrown terrorist group operating in America. The group, fed up with the greed of Wall Street and the government that acts to protect them, decides to target New York City.

While the gameplay is based on some classic Rainbow Six mechanics, there is a brand new cover system that takes you out of the first-person perspective and into the third.

A new icon-rich graphics style helps to highlight members of your team during a mission and other pertinent information.

Contacted Thursday, Ubisoft declined to comment.

This is going to be sweet.

No thread here would be complete without Spock kicking it off with a troll post.

First off, you didn't antagonize me. I've learned not to take your more troll-ish posts very seriously.

Second, I think it's great that you've found a game you genuinely enjoy since you seem to dislike so many others.

Third, this is a thread about a potential new Rainbow Six game. Your first post:
Arma II is the only proper tactical shooter left.

...had absolutely nothing to do with the topic, and served no purpose that I can see other than to incite people who might want to discuss the topic at hand.

So forgive me if I somehow mistook that pearl of wisdom for trolling.

Fourth, I wish there were more hardcore tactical shooters as well, though Arma is a little too extreme for me.

This.

Stoked. Iv loved every version of Rainbow Six, so i cant wait to see more on this current title.

Altho, i dont know why these devs cant try and give us a true first person over system. I dont like being taken out of the first person in a FPS.

I don't mind it. I like being able to see around corners.

Well im sure theres a way to do that in the first person view. Killzone does it, altho id want something a little better than what Killzone offers.

The problem with going into cover in these games is it becomes an instant win because you can see far more in that perspective. That doesnt make much sense.

They do, it's called "lean".
Lots of games used it before they became simplified. Now the player can have a full 360 degree line of sight by gluing himself to a chest heigh wall.

The problem with the lean option, and staying in first-person in general, is that you never have a good sense of where your "body" is. You think you're being sneaky, barely peaking around a corner, when really, your arm and leg are sticking out or something.

Arma II is about the only tactical shooter similar in nature to Rainbow 6 on the market at the moment as opposed to a "action game" dressed up as one. Rainbow 6 was basically what started tactical shooters. Now it's an action game in the form of Vegas. This will probably be mainly an action game with very light tactical elements.

Predictions...

1. The games European feel will go out the window, everyone will be American, it will feel American.

2. The vague briefing realistic story-telling will go out the window. It will feel like an attempt to emulate a Hollywood movie. Probably use cut-scenes and throw-away attractive female leads who give you intel (or something along those lines). Some "inside man" will betray the team.

3. Game will be more linear, scripted events. Use checkpoint system.

4. One shot kill will go out the window or only be used for some "hardcore mod" health regen will be default,

5. No lean, prone, prone roll.

6. Game will basically devolve into peeking out of cover and shooting enemy's for the most parts. Controlling multiple characters and pre-planning will be simplified or go right out the window altogether.

7. Faster paced. More enemy's thrown the player, in general, more spectacle. Scripted explosions.

8. Multiplayer will have perks/unlocks. Lots of DLC.

When the game is released, I think these pearls will be pretty right for the most part.

Besides that, what other recent (as in not 5 years ago) "tactical shooters" are actually close to what Rainbow 6 was? you could list Operation Flashpoint 2 I suppose but that in itself is a simplified version of Bohemia Interactive's Operation Flashpoint.

No one wants those games tho, Ubisoft has said it themselves. There is no market for those games. With the rising cost of development, you just cant make a large profit selling to a small consumer base. You just need to learn to deal with that.

I don't like PC Tactical shooters. Rainbow Six is my bread and butter when it comes to that. PC ones are too...budget. The command voices and slow animations make it feel like a cheap game although (in the case of the animations) I guess it's to make it more real. Still, I tried both Arma games and didn't like either. Flashpoint was...well...it was not good. Rainbow Six has kept me fully enthralled though.

Apparently this game is going to be subtitled "Patriots" and will be announced soon-ish.

Looking forward to some info. Enjoyed the co op in both Vegas games.

I was hoping a new Rainbow game was coming. Back in 09 I was excited when Vanguard was going to take place in NYC, I hope this has the charm of the first two. I still play them, you can always find a game.

I'll wait to get excited until I've seen some gameplay, or least have some solid information. The new Ghost Recon looks terrible.

Aahhaha, wow, sucks for that guy.

The animations are really good, it has a big budget American movie feel and it doesn't look cheap. That's all that matters. We can save america by pressing X during a QTE. Game-play doesn't really matter much these days. Cutting most of it out is a great move on Ubisofts part.

Sarcasm aside, I partially agree. I mean, this is a target gameplay video. It's not to base the actual game off but it didnt really get me excited...at all. Still, that doesn't bother me yet. If the actual gameplay gives me the same feeling...we have a problem.

Yeah, the gameplay didn't look all that thrilling. I would take Vegas style action over this. By the way, I never got around to playing part 2, how was that?
