Warner Bros. Acquires Death Note

Neither to me. It's just there.

This is the perfect description. I can tell you right now if you're a fan, you won't enjoy it. It's just flat out bland. There's none of the tension or cat and mouse game that made Light and L's relationship so interesting. Light has no real plans, no real motivation. The Misa replacement was so weak which is a damn shame. Other than Dafoe there is zero reason to watch this movie. Sadly, even someone coming in with zero knowledge I think would get bored. It's just a boring ass uninspired movie. It definitely makes me concerned about Wingard in general.

I thought this was boring. But, it got me to watch the show, which has been pretty great so far. Another anime Hollywood has used to show they have no idea what they're doing when it comes to these properties.

The show is pretty great. Like most longer animes it can drag in places, and it can get extremely convoluted, but see it through to the end. As far as animes go, it's certainly unique. I can't say I've ever seen anything else quite like it.

Wingard left twitter cause of the harassment and death threats he got over this.

Anime fans aint folks to mess with, especially after they got their hotpockets in their hands.

Yeah, I'm past the halfway mark where things took an unexpected turn. There's this theme they use whenever they want to play up a dramatic moment, but the part that stuck out the most was when they used it while Light was eating some potato chips. It had be rolling. :lmao:

Twitter is stupid and no one should use it.

and he would be praised by same fans if he made actual death note movie. respect material and original work and adapt it. And you will be praised. F*** with it you will be harrased. It's how it works.

He wouldnt even adapt it or even know about it if there werent for those same fans and fanatics all over the world who put Death Note into mainstream audience. Which put Death Note on the map where Warner Bros. and Netflix saw potential profit and opportunity get some of that fame.

This wasn't as bad as people made it out to be. Actually I didn't find it bad at all. It wasn't as good as The Guest, but to it felt like one of those minor movies from great directors, which don't really hit the mark, but have several fascinating elements going for it. It would have benefited from a rewrite to further develop some character traits and the cat and mouse game in the middle part, and I didn't find the actor playing L. to be always convincing. In my opinion that role neede someone who knows how to chew scenery.

Which is ridiculous, and should NOT happen. You can dislike someone's work without actually herrassing them. F***ing grow up and simply state your dislike for a movie, like people used to, without busting people's balls. Internet has given too many people who are afraid to say "hi" in real life the power to threat and herrass others online, which is kind of an interesting parallel to the Death Note story itself. Just give 'em a (note)book, and then...

I felt like Death Note should have been a series on Netflix instead of just a movie.

The death threats are too much. It's a movie. Find something more important in life.

I think I know what part you're talking about. Is Light narrating what he's doing at the same time all sinister like?

I agree with this completely. There's far too much story to even attempt to cram it into a 2 hour movie. Some material simply NEEDS a series to be told properly. It's why I hope the Sandman film continues hitting road blocks. A movie can't and shouldn't be done, but a series? That I can get behind.

Hahaha yeah. It was when he was under surveillance and he had to outsmart L and the cops.

This should have been a sequel imo. Set it a number of years after Light's death and focus on new characters in a new setting (well maybe older Near can show up at some point to). A lot of the inherent adaptation problems can be alleviated just by making that one change.

"I take a chip...I write a name...I TAKE ANOTHER CHIP!" :D Yeah...there are a couple of moments that are similarly ridiculous that you simply can't help but laugh at.

Like the MOST EPIC NAME WRITING EVERRRR!!!!! No seriously there are so many times when characters are just writing down names, and it's the most hilariously over the top thing. The animators were having WAY too much fun in those scenes.

Started the movie last month, only got about 15-20 minutes in, and then finally watched it this week, finishing it Friday. I liked it, but had a lot of problems with it. The direction, acting, editing, music were all high points that really elevated a script that needed a polish from a fresh writer. The movie feels like a very lean body, lacking any real muscle or fat to make it something substantial. Great bone structure, though.

The more I've been letting it marinate through the weekend, the more I think I like it. It's just frustrating that it could have been something really great, instead of just a blip.

7/10

Yup, we're pretty much on the same page.

Have you gotten to, "DELETE!!!!!" yet?

Well, I just finished the show. It was fantastic. Damn, Hollywood really messed up with this one.

To me it was fantastic till end of [BLACKOUT]Light and L storyline[/BLACKOUT] First part. It was 10/10. After that didnt really care much anymore.

I did enjoy that storyline more than the second one. But I still found the second one to be entertaining.

If he pissed of people that would send death threats over issues of fidelity to a funnybook, than I am glad he pissed them off. Those kinds of people can go play in a vacuum.

I came to this as cold as can be and thought it was a perfectly serviceable high concept B-movie. It's stylish and odd, the story-telling is focused and to-the-point, the photography is evocative, the cutting is propulsive, and the score was so good that I might have to buy it. Wingard is a solid filmmaker. This guy hasn't quite hit a home-run yet, but he's gonna make something really special one day, you mark my words.

Death Note is one of several properties that I personally think have no business being a movie. If they want this to be halfway decent, they'd turn it into a TV series. I feel the same way about Sandman, Watchmen, etc. Pretty much anything that is a fairly lengthy set of books, I always think they come out better as TV series.
