Warner Bros. Acquires Death Note

It's ironic that in the end Light Yagami is supposed to be japanese but looks and can easily be portrayed by an american actor, while L is supposed to be English, yet looks and most fans cast him as a japanese character

I'm getting the anime series from Netflix and start watching it, since you guys said it's good. I don't have confidence that WB will get it right, though, since almost all other anime adaptations have ended in failure.

The thing is the anime and manga are very verbose and there's very little action in them. It's more of a game between cat and mouse between Light and L.

It would be easy to merchandise and all that.

The thing is you will have to completely re-write the characters Americans. L could probably stay L, but all the other characters will need to become American.

You also can't get rid of the Shinigami either.

Shinigami can be easily re-written as a grim reaper.

^death note is one of the easiest to adapt anime imo
It's still a very difficult anime to adapt, the japanese movies basically adapted the anime and manga well but with that also came the chesy scenes that look good when drawn but no when shoun in live-action.

By the way, what nationality should L be? I see that most here are casting him as Japanese, but in the manga and anime he was English:

Ohba claims he left "everything" about L's character design to Obata, who asked Ohba if L could be "unattractive". Afterwards, Ohba would include his ideas about the character into his thumbnails, including L's posture when seated, and notes such as: "he's English", and "he's listless". He also added details regarding L's mannerisms, and his "sweet tooth". Apart from all that, Ohba credits Obata for the character designs.

But considering that Light is going to be recast as a non-Japanese, L may be turned into one.

Oh, you can get rid of the Shinigami. It would just make the Death Note more of an unknown supernatural force. You'd have to probably delve into if the thing were to be successful and spawn sequels, but for the initial story, you could easily adapt the basics without having them. It would be less interesting, and I'd be disappointed if they did, but you could do it.

zack efron is still a very good choice for Light Yagami

Yep, Zac Efron is perfect for Light, they look almost the same, and he's a good actor

What is this obsession with Zac Efron? I don't see him as a great acting talent, and I certainly don't see him as Light.

well he is a solid young actor imo and looks exactly like Light

not hard to see it

Light is a teenager with a God complex. Zac Efron isn't there anymore.

Well to be fair, L is actually 1/4 Japanese. Ezra is actually American though. As previously said, it would be most likely that Light would be played by an American in an American adaption.

No, he doesn't have that bite, that ambiguity. Nicholas Hoult is the right one to play Light.

To be fair Zack Efron didn't really have the oportunity to try something dark yet, i know this example was brought too many times for other things but Michael Keaton only did comedies before portraying Batman

If this adaptation goes through, I think it's a given that they'll recast and relocate the story to an American setting.

Eh, he can look like Light but he'll won't do the character justice. I've yet to see him do anything dark.

That's kind of what makes it perfect, though. The whole thing about Light is that he comes off as very 'goody toe-shoes', so to speak, and you'd never expect someone like him to be this unlikable scumbag with a God complex who murders people without remorse. It'd probably be a perfect role for Efron to show his range (assuming he has that, which I think he does). Heath Ledger wasn't exactly someone you'd connect to dark roles, but look at what he did with the Joker.

Please Warner Brother let Shane Black make his adaptation. This is one case where the Japanese setting isn't really all that important. It's also rare having a director who's this well versed in manga and actually talented!

Shane Black wants this to be his next project so please just give him the go ahead.

There's a good video of Shane Black talking about WB being pansies on YouTube but I can't post it due to Black dropping the F bomb once. It should be pretty easy to find regardless. Here's the latest article from April 26th on his interest on DN being his next project.

Do it. I know he has Doc Savage supposedly on his plate. If Iron Man becomes the massive year hit it looks like, he'll be in demand.

Iron Man 3 became the 5th highest grossing film of all time, that should be able to give him the proper control over his Death Note and Doc Savage projects, though it's a shame that we haven't heard anything of him since IM 3 was released.

I'm disspointed. With the bump I thought maybe some news had been released.

Well, the film does deserve an active thread to be honest.

It doesn't if there isn't any actual news. Bumps like that are always just the worst.

heh. still waiting for news on that supposed live action Bleach film, too.......lol
