WB's 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' original script by J.K. Rowling - Part 2

The irony being that UK critics are known for being more harsh about ****.

Well then what the frell is going on? :woot:

My IPhone has learned the word frelling. Lol

That isn't true. Most RT scores drop when they get to the US critics. We have seen this time and again with the tentpoles. This one being British might mean even more so.

His face is like 150% its size. This is what happens when you drink to the point 4 dudes need to help you walk

Hollywood sees Depp having these problems and is like "lets ignore it and give him a role in our new Harry Potter franchise". Enabling alcoholism is fine as long as JK Rowling continues to make money off her IP! I am sure she sleeps well at night on her bed of money.

Depp is not a dirty word just yet. POTC is still coming out with no issue, even though he wasn't in the teaser. I can still recall the era when casting Depp in your film elicited squeals of delight from fanboys, lol.

A lot of stars who are now irrelevant in the states seem to still have draw overseas. The rest of the world is always behind. :funny:

They should have gone with Farrell instead of Depp. He was fantastic in the movie, I don't need a more eccentric Grindewald. And I think he would have played the former lovers chemistry with Dumbledore far better IMO.

Depp isn't really a draw though. Otherwise Mortdecai should have been exploded, although I guess making five time as much overseas then in the U.S. means it was huge.

Studios give a bigger **** about overseas box office now than they did back in the day. If it does good here, it's a plus, but if the whole of China pays to see your thing.....make it rain yuans.

Same thing happened with Spectre, even Doctor Strange dropped a few points when it got released in the U.S. It's one of the reasons why studios often release their big budget tentpoles almost everywhere else first, before N.A.

They do that because of higher rates of pirating overseas.

I don't think it's a bad movie at all, but I think the early reviews were definitely a little skewed. I can see why others might not like it as much.

I loved it! That's all I will say!

I'm going to watch it tomorrow.

I got the screenplay today and have glanced through it. The magical world in America really is a darker place. I saw that Graves [BLACKOUT]sentences Newt to immediate execution for letting the beasts out and risking the American wizarding world being revealed to the public and then he sentences Tina to execution for just being connected to the event. No trial. No oversight. No defense.[/blackout] That's insane.

About Depp, while I like him as an actor, I do think its a shame that Farrell wasn't cast as Grindewald. Colin Farrell doesn't get enough love in Hollywood. He's likeable, he's a damn good actor, and people know who he is. If he's just playing a one film villain and doesn't return I'm gonna be very disappointed. Give him a good franchise, Hollywood. :argh:

Except that it happens because Graves is the bad guy and he's trying to get them out of the way.

No disrespect to Farrell, but he's gotten plenty of love. The problem is he tends to tank whenever he's given a huge role. It looked like he was regaining ground after In Bruges, but then he flopped again with Total Recall. I think for a while Hollywood wanted him to be a huge star, but it didn't pan out. Like with Sam Worthington.

IDK, I find Worthington a charisma sinkhole. Farrell has it, but he just isn't consistent enough - when a character lands for him he is great, but when it doesn't, it's yikes. Here he was exceptional.

So I've seen the first 4 Harry Potter films in theaters, and watched/paid half attention to the 5th film. Haven't seen 6-8.

Can I still go in and watch this movie, or should I finish all 8 HP films first?

Honestly, I thought he was far more exceptional in Saving Mr. Banks.

I totally forgot. He was Emma Thomson's dad in it.
You are right, he was heartbreaking in that movie as well. A completely different performance - raw and emotional.

I think you can watch without them. Do you know who Grindewald is in Harry Potter cannon, because he is the only really important takeaway from it.

Loved this little flick. I think the only thing I didn't really love was that in the HP series, you knew more or less that the next chapter would include Harry's next year at school, a new Dark Arts teacher, and a rising threat from Voldemort and his supporters. With this, I have NO idea what the sequel will be about. Does Newt lose more magical creatures and have to find them? Or is it just the rising threat of Grindelwald in the magical community and possibly the introduction to Tom Riddle?

I mean that's cool, but then why not have this be Newt Scamander's adventures and not call it Fantastic Beasts? I just got a little confused by that.

But otherwise, top notch. I loved how freaking creative all the creatures were, I had a ton of fun with Dan Fogler's character, it was sweet, funny, charming, and magical. I kinda wish that the Obscurus was designed differently because it kinda seemed like the least creative beast, but those are minor gripes.

Also, Depp really looked terrible. Beyond the hair and makeup, he just isn't aging well.

i saw Fantastic Beasts! twice! :gngl:

(ok it wasnt part of the plan to see it twice in a row but yesterday was crazy af outside and i couldnt get home so i thought its better to just hide it out in the IMAX on a franchise i love :ilv: )

as a long time Potterhead i couldnt be happier with this movie. there was a lot of easter eggs for the fans (specially if you read them / listened to them) but lots of new interesting stuff too. lots of lessons for real life as well. its a beautifully filmed story and executed fantastically, pun intended :woot:

also for those who hated David Yates' work in the last Potter films, they be eating some humble pie now :mnm:

so much AWESOME in this movie i dont even know where to start..... oh yeah EZRA MILLER. if and when the The Flash franchise can get their head on straight, Ezra will do justice to the role, i know he can

I might catch this on the weekend. It seems decent. And I like the contrast of setting it in NY instead of London/UK.

I really enjoyed the hell out of this, and seeing it at Lincoln Square in IMAX's return there made it even better. There's a hint of the darkness of the later Harry Potter stories mixed in with the joy and wonder aspect of the first ones. I can't wait to see more honestly. It reminded me of how much I missed the franchise and getting a new one almost every year.
