Compulsion "went back to the drawing board" for intro to Arthur's story.

We-Happy-Few_01-19-18.jpg

We Happy Few has been delayed from its previously planned April 13 release to this summer, developer Compulsion Games announced. It will be available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

“There are these moments that are memorable, very funny, and super weird and we’re really excited to show you all,” said We Happy Few producer Sam Abbott in a news post. “But we felt that the first two hours of Arthur’s story just didn’t live up to those moments, meaning that the game didn’t start as well as it should. So we went back to the drawing board and made a couple of big decisions: we brought forward a number of story moments, to get into the action faster, and also rebuilt the whole first island for Arthur.”

The delay comes alongside the announcement that there will be a second playable character named Sally in addition to Arthur, who is teased in the latest developer video update.

We Hpapy Few will launch for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on August 10, publisher Gearbox Publishing and developer Compulsion Games announced during Microsoft’s E3 2018 press conference.

Here is an overview of the game, via Compulsion Games:
Featuring an additional 20+ hours of narrative-driven gameplay, players will play as three uniquely flawed characters coming to terms with their past and uncovering the secrets of Wellington Wells, an island off the coast of England that seems to have been cut off from the rest of the world after World War II.
Set in retro-futuristic 1960s England, players will find a city ravaged by war and rebuilt by delusionally happy people. Everything appears joyful in Wellington Wells, including its roads, its people, and its omnipresent television personality: Uncle Jack! But, it’s actually a world on the brink of collapse. Unveil its dark history, and discover how and why its residents came to be so beguilingly happy.

A We Happy Few side story.

Compulsion Games has announced We Happy Few: Uncle Jack Live VR, a free PlayStation VR-exclusive side story to the upcoming We Happy Few available today via the PlayStation Store.

Here is an overview of the game, via the PlayStation Blog:

The original goal for Uncle Jack Live VR was to provide players with a chance to meet and work with Wellington Wells’ most prominent celebrity figure. Initially, the experience simply involved ways to manipulate a broadcast camera within a standard Uncle Jack episode, but the project evolved from watching Uncle Jack in-studio to actually building a full broadcast with him, featuring dynamic content and multiple outcomes.

We owe the enhancement of the concept to the multi-medium expertise and masterful execution of our partners at Signal Space Lab. By their design, each phase of the broadcast tasks the player with selecting the perfect news article for Uncle Jack to read aloud on-air, ensuring Wellies everywhere stay entertained and remember to “take their Joy.” If you happen to get it wrong, UJ will expertly roll with the punches, spinning the bad news in hilariously positive ways—but you can count on his opinion of you changing as a result. Anger him enough and he’ll outright cancel the broadcast. Make good decisions, and you’ll be his favorite guest producer ever!

But impressing Uncle Jack isn’t your singular concern. There happens to be a Downer Outbreak developing throughout the broadcast center, and it’s up to you to find a way to turn all those frowns upside down (hint: it involves dosing them with a whole lot of Joy!).

Over the course of development on We Happy Few, the team amassed a huge amount of content that we wanted to collect and share with our biggest fans, so we included an “Archive Mode” in Uncle Jack Live VR to do just that. When you’re done playing producer, you can spend some downtime in the media archives where you can explore over 40 Uncle Jack episodes, listen to official We Happy Few soundtrack selections, and watch bonus materials like trailers and animation reels.

That’s hours upon hours of content to absorb in a nice cozy virtual space!

Dedicated fans will be happy to know we’ve included plenty of fun We Happy Few Easter eggs within the PS VR experience. You’ll find a number of our favorite assets decorating the spaces, including the “salty dog,” authentic happy masks, a very British phone booth, and a worn-out poster given to us by our good friends at Gearbox Publishing.
We Happy Few is due out for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on August 10.

Compulsion Games has released the launch trailer for We Happy Few, and several outlets have posted new gameplay videos alongside their final reviews (roundup available at OpenCritic).

Here is an overview of the game, via PlayStation.com:

Take Your Joy… or Don’t. The Choice is Yours.
We Happy Few is the tale of a plucky bunch of moderately terrible people trying to escape from a lifetime of cheerful denial in the city of Wellington Wells. In this alternative 1960s England, conformity is key. You’ll have to fight or blend in with the drug-addled inhabitants, most of whom don’t take kindly to people who won’t abide by their not-so-normal rules.

Discover the retrofuturistic city’s dark history as you play through the intertwined narratives of three quietly rebellious citizens of Wellington Wells, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, as they face their pasts, prepare for the future, and engage in activities that aren’t exactly status quo in the artificially enthused society.

Everything appears to be joyful in Wellington Wells, including the roads, the people, and its omnipresent television personality, Uncle Jack! However, it’s a big, idyllic world on the brink of collapse. You will discover the history of this world, and how it came to be just so beguilingly happy.

A Dystopia of Your Very Own
In We Happy Few, no two playthroughs are alike. While the citizens of Wellington Wells will always want to ensure that you’ve taken your Joy, the procedurally generated world will ensure that your experience with We Happy Few is different and unique.
We Happy Few is due out for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on August 10.
