What do I need to make icons and avatars?

I wanna know how to make my own avatars and buddy icons (for AIM) What would I need to do this and how would I do this?

Imageready is soooo complicated. I could never find out how to make fughin' frames play one after the other.

But for animated avatars, you're gonna wanna go with Ulead Gif Animator 5.

It's not really that complicated, and it can be worth using because it makes it easy to touch stuff up in photoshop then go straight to imageready.
