What do I need to make icons and avatars?

I wanna know how to make my own avatars and buddy icons (for AIM) What would I need to do this and how would I do this?

how do I actually put the pictures in order though? so they transition and whatnot?
 
Or you can use Imageready, which comes standard with Photoshop.
 
Imageready is soooo complicated. I could never find out how to make fughin' frames play one after the other. :(

But for animated avatars, you're gonna wanna go with Ulead Gif Animator 5.
 
I uses Ulead to make an animated avatar. I uploaded it, but it doesn't cycle.
Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?

It's not really that complicated, and it can be worth using because it makes it easy to touch stuff up in photoshop then go straight to imageready.

Do you recommend the same for .Mac users are is there something else I can use?

GIMP is free and has extensions available to enable the creation of animated gifs. :up:
