The Avengers What if? [Spoilers]

What if Joss Whedon decided to end the Avengers movie on a cliffhanger with Iron Man getting stuck in the other dimension because Black Widow had sealed the portal before he fell through the gap? That would then have definitely meant that in Iron Man 3 he wouldn't be able to call upon the Avengers for help but would be trapped, trying to find a way back to earth.

That is the kind of thing that Whedon could easily have done, since he's often ended certain seasons of Buffy in that way. It would've had an extremely dramatic ending (but of course not the more lighthearted, feelgood ending we did have) and would've heightened anticipation for Iron Man 3 to discover the fate of Marvel Studio's biggest hero.

I prefer the ending we did get, but who else thinks it could've been cool to have a cliffhanger?

His suit was already dead before coming back through the portal. He would have just died in space.

Well Whedon would've had to have changed it slightly so that he had some power in his suit. Also Stark could've been struck by some power source. The thing is that the way cliffhangers work is that they precisely hinge on the fact that it seems that all is lost and the hero has no way of escaping.
