These 2 seem to rise to the top in terms of X-centric events

Hmmm......I would have to go with the Phoenix Saga.

Well, the Dark Phoenix Saga is undoubtedly the best of X-Men storylines, but between Phoenix Saga and AOA? Hmm...

Yes, if we're talking Dark Phoenix, which I know you are, hands down the best X-storyline. I absoutley love AoA, but it didn't have a massive impact on the X-Men world, the only thing that remained was Sugar Man, X-Man, and now Blink and Sabes. Phoenix is probably the biggest part of Jean and a major factor involved in anything 'X'.

But, really, in all honesty, and I know I would get butchered for thinking this, but Grant Morrison's entire New X-Men run, while it may not be the perfect continuity of character actions that everyone complains about, it is one of the best, most fun, and most 'suspensful' stories I've ever read.

Well, when you say Phoenix Saga, I think Claremont's run from 101-137. So between that and the Age of Apocalypse, I have to go with the AOA. There's no denying that the DPS is a work of art, but even it doesn't match the sheer scope of the Age of Apocalypse. For simply grandeur and scope, AoA gets the win in my book. I agree with usagicassidy that Morrison's run should rank up there too.

Well...as far as Epic-ness goes. BOTH AoA and The Phoenix Saga have it in Spades...but there is an underlying love story with TPS and DPS a defining one that lasted throughout the history of the characters of Jean and Scott...that is until the movies came out and butchered it all.
Now the Age of Apocalypse was just balls to the walls greatness! it had no need for a major love story but Rogue and magneto would count. but the fight for survival andlast hope desperation against all encompassing evil....just wow. it truly showed WHY there is a need for heroes in the world. That was its lasting impact. That Xavier and his dream, no matter what you may think of the man, but his dream and drive for the hope of a better future between man and mutant are needed and appreciated.

I think this thread should've included more arcs for consideration. I personally loved Inferno and X-Cutioner's Song, but between AOA and DPS, I'd have to go with AoA. It was a bigger arc and included more, but the DPS will always remain a landmark event for the 616.

Grant Morrisons run was pure genius.

If we're just doing one story Arc though, id say Executioners Song still holds a placec in my heart, as it was the first real epic X-Story that i read.

Phoenix is the only part of Jean. She has never been allowed to develop a personality that wasn't "Phoenix".

And while Grant Morisson's run had its flaws, it was without a doubt the gutsiest run in comics in well over a decade. And that's why some fans hated it so much. Because they had been so used to the same five or so storylines being recycled for so many years that once he came around and changed it on them, they freaked out before even giving it a chance.

"It's DIFFERENT! It must be AWFUL!!"

As people have brought up Morrison, thought id post this...

You're absolutely right!!! Seeing Jean get reborn and dying, gaining and losing the power of the Phoenix every 2 years is the best thing to ever happen to the X-Men!!! I can't wait till she comes back to life and they deny she's Phoenix to eventually make her say she is Phoenix after all and then die again!!! (please note the heavy content of sarcasm in those sentences).

I'm an alternate reality fan, so I have to go with Earth 295, or as you commoners refer to "AOA" :p Sure, the Phoenix Saga was nice and all, but an entire reality is far more inviting and interesting (until they ruined it with last year's mini ¬¬). Anyway, my vote is for the AOA :D

UssagiCassidy... I love everything in your sig... yet I am so on the other side of the fence with Morrison. I think his run was the worst thing to ever happen to the X-Men... did you guys read Patty Cockrum's rant about it? I'll look the link and post it if you haven't.

Yet you like any piece of **** shoveled our way as long as it has Storm in it, so how seriously can we take your opinions? ;) :p

Albeit off-topic...but kind of on-topic because it's what we've been talking about...is it true that the entire collection of Morrison's NEW X-Men will be collected in one giant hardcover? Does that come out around December?

Age of Apocalypse. A complete new world, an original different point of view: Cyclops with long hair and Wolverine with just an arm, a world divided and extremely struggled... incredibly beautiful, the development of the saga was so great!

Though the X men are X men mostly because of the Phoenix saga (which is a really great moment of the comics history), I'll never forget what it "could have been" if Xavier died so long ago.

Yep, thats what i believe aswell.
Thats gonna b one badass hardcover...... a bludey expensive one aswell id imagine

My coffee table is missing a leg... maybe I'll buy that hardcover :p

You jerk. lol.

But yeah, like J&D was saying, I do like that component about AoA, how radically different everything was. You look at Ultimate X-Men and you're like "they're barely any different!" but almost everyone in AoA had some big changes to their character, while still essentially keeping 'what's them' about them.

Has anyone ever read the Bongo comics parody of the Pheonix saga with Radioactive Man?
