There are various thematic aspects of a film, Spielberg's films are a broken family reuniting for example.

So my question to you is, what is your favorite thematic aspect in a film?

Mine-since I've seen a trend in my own film making, story telling, etc.- is a "maturing: how a boy becomes a man." This can be tackled through various means. It's basically a film where a young adult undergoes some kind of change and comes out of the journey "an adult."

Downfall.

And specifically when a gangster's world crumbles around him.
The Long Good Friday is a prime example. About a London gangster who sees his empire fall because of vicious terrorist attacks. Goodfellas, where Henry Hill completely ****s up his dream-world over a narcotics affair. Get Carter, about a hitman who while in pursuit of revenge makes so many enemies that escaping is impossible. In Scorsese's Casino DeNiro undermines his own business by marrying a no-good woman. And ofcourse the heart-shattering drama of The Godfather Part II

And then you got the movies with a person's psychotic downfall. In White Heat James Cagney starts losing all control, slowly turning into a complete madman. Falling Down has Michael Douglas as a common man losing it because of small but recognizable frustrations in daily life. InThe Man who would be King Sean Connery start believing he's a God, with tragic results. Raging Bull is a story about a man who alienates everybody he loves with his ferocious temper.

There are alot more movies with this theme. It usually provides chances for an actor to go beserk, good drama (nothing as tragic as seeing someone destroy everything he loves) and some bloodshed aswell ;)

I agree as well on vengeance. To see how it changes someone and makes them into something so completely different to who they were before the events that brought them to where they are now.

I like stories of conquering loneliness and ones where you lose sight of your priorities, and have to get back to what you once stood for.
