What makes some films timeless?

Does anyone see any films produced this year becoming "timeless"? I can't think of any of the top of my head...

I think V for Vendetta has a chance, because it's a vision of the future that still can come true, people can look back at it seeing it as prophetic.

Its a fact that in old times, there was more good movies and masterpieces than today or recent years. I think that , in general terms, all the creative things in all the levels were better than today.

The only fact is that you are wearing rose colored glasses and have selectively eliminated all the crap from those years and only choose to remember those few 'masterpieces'

That's certainly a possibility.

it will never become a classic, simply because it's a future which has been rehashed time and time again. Of recent movies I would definetly say the Matrix has become timeless and unfortunatly although I don't like it the lord of the rings triology

The Matrix, yes. Lords of the Rings, though immensley popular, I can't picture myself looking back in 40 years going, "Now THOSE are what movies are all about."

I'm sure others will disagree, though.

You're right! to the Phantom Menace being timeless.

Yeah, LOTR are certainly up there. Everyone praises them so much, but I just don't see what's so great about them. The books, I can understand. But as films, I just don't see what's so great about them. Randal's view on the trilogy in Clerks II is exactly how I feel about them. Just a lot of walking. Hell, even the trees walk.

The other films on the highest gross list are much more worthy of their posistions, IMO.

unfortuantly the unholy trilogy has wiped out all the decent movies off their rightful rank and left the most rubbish on top

It's Star Wars for this generation. Bigger, flashier and more lights.

appropiate for the thread title as the original star wars is also for our generation and i think i'll keep them and disregard mannequin skywalkers triology

Yeah. It's long, boring, and cartoonish, with horrific acting.

But Darth Maul was badass. I'll give you that.

I think it's harder for the sci-fi genre to be timeless. They set themselves up in a "not too distant future" so when that time actually comes, it just looks ridiculous since it's not even close.

true but you'll find the majority of the classics fall into the sci-fi genre, mainly because what you say is true and people enjoy the possibility of a similar future

Spider-Man a classic eh?

While it certainly has its flaws, it was a film that was decades in the making and fulfilled the dreams of millions of fans who had been waiting to see Spidey on the big screen for quite some time. It's also the most successful superhero franchise, financially and probably critically. I can see it being loved for generations.

they have to have some special quality that makes them great. And I think that comes from a bunch of factors somehow clicking together in perfect or near perfect harmony. Like Wrath of Khan. Or empire strikes back.

Spiderman classic... pfft. Daredevil's more of a classic than that movie, especially the DC.

The only superhero movie I can see being considered classic beyond the first Superman is Batman Begins, to me and others I know Spider-Man has not aged well at all. I can't bring myself to watch it again I know that.

It was sarcasm, but it is a growing trend of people to think that the movies of a bygone era are overall better than what comes in current times.

There was a lot of crap back then too, but you only remember the gems and those few movies per year that stand out while the rest fade away into the land of forgotten movies. You are comparing those gems against the week to week releases of today, it's a very unfair comparison.

A better comparison is to compare those yesteryear gems to the best of the last decade. I am sure you'll see there have been some great movies in the last ten years that can compare to them.

thank you!

i get so sick of the whole "all the movies today suck!! Teh Classix r tha roxxors! lol!" thing... hollywood has always made stinkers, usually more than good movies, but the good movies are the only ones anyone remembers.
