What next for the WWE, does it have a reason to exist?

This thread actually brought me out of SHH retirement. The title was ridiculously absurd. I don't know where you guys are now in the discussion, but some people simply underestimate the power of this billion-dollar buisness. I'd be willing to bet ratings raised a bit after the Benoit tragedy. This is one of the worst cases of any publicity is good publicity, but its true.


By the way, for some of the wrestling fanatics, anybody remember Dave Meltzer reporting a year ago that a big name star was being observed very closely for his health and mental state? I wonder if Benoit was the guy. I always thought it was Angle or Flair.

As far as the title of this thread, it's a mute point. Pro Wrestling as a whole will continue as well as WWE as an entity. There are people who would like to see it discontinue but that can be said about most, if not all, forms of entertainment. As you said, as long as people are buying tickets, it will be around.
On the 2nd point, I remember the Meltzer blurb. It happened close to the time that Lashley and Khali were pulled off the road for elevated liver enzymes. After Angle bolted to TNA, I assumed it was him but that was never confirmed. It may well have been Benoit. However, Angle and Flair are indicative of another industry problem. Guys who simple can't shed the spotlight. Both have millions of $$ and could walk away from wrestling. Yet despite reports of Angle's continuing neck/back issues and Flair being in a good deal of pain after 30+ years in the biz, neither wants to retire. In fact Angle is contemplating a run in MMA! Steroids users are difficult to catch but stopping guys who don't know when to slow down will be an even more difficult issue for the industry to face.

Yeah, I remember that. It'd be nuts if were Benoit.
 
I'd whole-heartedly agree. People that just don't like wrestling or the WWE want it shut down simply because they don't like it and this whole situation gives them a leg to stand on.

Testosterone is an anabolic steroid, all androgens are and Tesosterone is the route androgen. Injectable testosterone has a longer life before metabolation than natural testosterone so you don't inject it all the time. It's also the depression of coming down which is most likely to have led to problems not roid rage. So you would expect a lower but still elevated level. Roid depression though is not something a coroner would be prepared to stick his neck out and say was a cause though. This is due to most experts agreeing it happens but the fact it doesn't always happen leading to reasonable doubt.

He had a steroid in his system at raised levels.

I admit I was wrong on that point. The show I was watching said "no anabolic steroid, but testosterone". After someone corrected that after I posted that it had me confused so I looked it up and testosterone is a form of anabolic steroids. So I was wrong, but based on what I heard on TV. I think the guy meant no other forms of anabolic other than testosterone in his body, but he said it wrong.

O.K. The guy on telly was wrong. To explain why, most androgens used as anabolic steroids have an active group at the carbon 17 atom. See my almost original posts in this thread if you'r interested. Injectable testosterone does not have a methyl group at C17 it doess though have an active group making it last as an endocrine messenger longer than natural gonadatrophins and as such it is more effective. Roid depression is still a side effect, in fact it may be more serious because the supression of gonadatrophins is greater when natural testosterone analogues are introduced like with Chris Benoit.

Fake gladitorial combat. It always amazes me how people can be so up on UFC (where people are really brutally beating the crap out of each other) and be so down on WWE (where people pretend to beat up on each other).

I mean what could possibly be the point of violence for entertainment if it isn't even real right? :rolleyes:

UFC doesn't market to kids, neither does boxing. Plus the whole deal with the fake story lines and everything, boxing and UFC doesn't do any of that.
 
I think it's a supreme case of throwing out the baby with the bathwater. Professional wrestling has pleny of outlets other than WWE. Companies like Ring of Honor and Puro make it about the "wrestling" and not the "body image"

If the powers that be choose to punish or whatever WWE and the problems get fixed, that's fine. But all of professional wrestling shouldn't suffer

If UFC wasn't marketing to kids, there wouldn't be video games...but there are
 
They have a T rating I believe.....but parents can be ignorant when it comes to games so even if they were M parents would probably buy them for the little bastards

So the UFC isn't marketing to kids in quite the same way as the WWE then.
 
They have the same tools in marketing though..DVD's availabe for rental in stores, which is the UFC bread and butter. T-shirts. Video games. Apparel. Each of the different "teams" in UFC have apparel lines which are readily availabe in retail stores or online.

I don't think you see kids in the Audience at UFC events in the way you do at the WWE.

I've been to UFC events in CT and have seen kids there...it's also just as accesible on TV here in the states as well. Spike TV has at least 12-16 hours of UFC programming on a week

The WWE obviously markets far more actively to kids. Characters like John Cena are aimed squarely at children.
 
So let's just shut the WWE down and put all the freaks out on the street. But wait, the WWE actually does employee about 350 people, accountants, tech personnel, production crew, concessions, travel agents, receptionists, and the like....you want to give them a job Whirly?...and considering the WWE is based in my home state of CT....I wouldn't like to hear about 350 being out of work

People make choices, if they are part of something unsavoury I worry little for them.
 
I have a friend there who is a travel agent. She makes sure everyone has rental cars and hotel rooms....how is that unsavory???

It just might happen....wouldn't surprise me at all if Congress looked the WWE's way.
