I'm reading the current arc of Daredevil and I'm liking it. I think its good. But, I haven't been getting, nor read, anything of Daredevil at all. The only thing I got before this arc was the film (I will always say that movie is good, going by director's cut only) nothing else, unless you count his apparence in the '90s Spider-Man animated series.

Now, treating The Murdock Papers as the only TPB I will get with no problem. And with Loeb's Yellow in consideration and Miller's Born Again not really in my mind to get at all, what TPBs of Daredevil do you think I should get that is good to be a "beginning" before this arc I'm reading? In other words, what TPBs are good to get? And if an arc in one book continues in another, please state that.

Also, I don't want to get it, yet there is a spot in me of Born Again in some degree. Could someone tell me, if they have read that book, why is it that good and why should I get it if they insist I should?

The Murdock Paper's is the arc directly before the one you're reading, it's true, but you should really go back to the begining of the Bendis/Maleev run, which is where everything started. The Murdock Papers are the culmination of the events begun in the book I just linked you to

Born Again, DD: Yellow, Frank Miller Visionaries, Hardcover vol 1, and The Man Without Fear are all other essential reads you should get at some point, but again, THAT ^ is where you want to start if you want to lead up to where you are now.

the book I linked you to I gave to a GIRL earlier this week, a girl who had never read comics before, and she just ate it up, she demanded more, she wants to know everything about Daredevil

So I can read that HC and then go to Murdock Papers with no problem?

mmm, no, you should really read the entire Bendis/Maleev, trust me because it's one big saga. The Murdock Papers was the conclusion of it.

bad analogy, but: I'm pointing you towards The Fellowship of the Rings, because that's where you need to start. The Murdock Papers is The Return of the King, the conclusion. But you wouldn't want to skip over The Two Towers, ya know?

or, I dunno, the current arc is Return of the Jedi, and you want to watch The Empire Strike Back, and I'm saying go back to The Phantom Menace and catch up, but don't skip over the others (another bad anaology since the prequels sucked, but you know what I'm getting at)

Okay....

Well then, lets try this:

1) Daredevil HC-2 (Issues 26-37)
2)
3) Daredevil HC-6 (Issues 16-19, 76-81)

What would be number 2?

HCs #3-5

get HC #2 and you'll see what I'm talking about and you won't be able to resist reading them in order

like I said, it's GOLD

(and I didn't know WAKE UP was being collected in vol 6, thank you)

Your welcome.

Hmm, this seems to be a problem. As getting 5 Hardcover books will cost $110.00 from amazon alone. Man, it seems just reading and moving on from the arc I'm reading now seems to be best. 2.99 a month for an issue, a new one I should say, of Daredevil beats going back and buying books passing 100 dollars.

I just asked this because I thought maybe I should get some books since this arc made me start getting the title. Part of me is saying just HC 2 and Murdock Papers is what I should get but I know, even by you, it wouldn't be right. But again, I don't know. Would that be alright?

P.S. In case I foget, this site will help you and anyone else on TPBs/HCs. When a trade/HC will come out, what issues it'll have, what books are out there and if they're still in print or not, etc. Put this on your favorites as this can be VERY helpful:

All of the hardcovers. :o
Get the Miller stuff too, it's available in 3 tpbs called Daredevil Visionaries: Frank Miller. You only need the second 2 to get his whole initial run (the first trade is illustrated by him, but scripted by Roger McKenzie)
If you dig that, you'll love Born Again, which Miller did in, what, 86? Brilliant Daredevil story. One of the best comic stories ever told, IMO.

But I cant afford the hardcovers. And only Born Again is up in the air, not the rest.

Here's what you should get, just listen, don't skip anything

DD Visionaries: Frank Miller volumes 2 & 3
DD Legends vol 2: Born Again
Daredevil: The Man Without Fear
Daredevil: Guardian Devil

then pick up Bendis' stuff in hardcover (though I did it in trade just to keep my bookshelf looking nice and symmetric)

If Born Again is up in the air I don't know what I can do for you besides give you a knife to slit your own wrists with, because it's easily the best DD story ever, and probably a top 5 Marvel story from the last 20 years

You know, it's not like you have to buy them all at the same time. Just get one or two now, and then buy the rest in order when you get the cash. Really, you should read them all. Skipping from the begining to the end is just, stupid. Take your time.

And I would also recommend Born Again. It really is one of the best stories Marvel has ever produced.

Agreed. Just buy a hardcover once a month or so. It'll give you something to live for. :)

LOL

Man, then it must be good if you're gonan say that. If I don't plan to get it all, you might say "Binker, if you don't get it I'll find where you live and kick your ass!"

Nice idea. I hope that can work out.

Reading what Born Again is about, its almost as if THAT can be the first story, then Murdock Papers and then the comic is all thats left.

Because I treat TPBs as movies. From movie to movie, things change to the setting and characters. So thats why I wanted just a couple books. When Elijya said to get Hardcover #2, I thought "ok, that and Murdock Papers" But it wasn't easy as I thought. But checking the Bendis run on those hardcovers, it seems only a couple to a few (lets say 3-4 of what I think off the top of my head) only relate to the arc I'm reading now.

So this is what you guys are asking me to get:

THE MAN WITHOUT FEAR

VISIONARIES: MILLER 2 - 168-182

VISIONARIES: MILLER 3 - 183-191

BORN AGAIN

GUARDIAN DEVIL – 1-8

DAREDEVIL HC 2 – 26-37

DAREDEVIL HC 3 – 38-50

DAREDEVIL HC 6 – 76-81

I have a plan to make up my mind. But no one will like it. Its worth a shot.

Don't worry, kids! I'll think of something!

I think I'll be picking those up as well.

Born Again is the definitive confrontation between Kingpin and DD, it's what a writer is talking about when he points to their history together.:o

You pretty much need to pick up those third and fourth hardcovers, though. Bendis' DD stuff is one big long crime epic. I know it seems like a lot but if you stretch it out over time, you know, buy one hardcover per month, or every couple months even, and it'll be OK. Trust me, when you read those Bendis hardcovers you'll want everything.

if you can't afford every book I would drop Man Without Fear, and maybe Visionaries vol 3. Though it's nice to have all of Miller's run since vol 2 leads right into vol 3 on a Punisher story...whatever though, you get the gist of DD's origin, and while very good, you can hold off on Man Without Fear, just pick it up in a year or two:up:

I just got Daredevil: Born Again and am really enjoying it. I'd recommend it.

Ok, I have some news on that book. I have a friend who's.......not near me. He's gonna scan the pages from the book and I'll read it to decide to buy it. So I'am checking it.

THE MAN WITHOUT FEAR is up in the air. Maybe not getting it. VISIONARIES: MILLER 2 is up in the air. VISIONARIES: MILLER 3, as I've been told here that its sorta not needed as 2 mostly is, so thats not needed. And GUARDIAN DEVIL is 50/50 as its a semi-sequel to Born Again.

I never really got into Guardian Devil, but that's just me.

I always liked Gaurdian Devil. It was the first DD story I ever read. Plus, I never was all that attached to Mysterio, so that helped. But it's not neccesary really. Like I said, take your time. No rush.
