DareDevil

Last issue showed why Waid's run has been my favorite DD run. It's all about subtlety. Waid and Samnee keep things moving at a nice pace instead of trying to stop everything for some kind of dramatic impact that's not necessary. Murdock deals with a past his prime Evil Knievel like daredevil in two issues instead of it being dragged out into six, and then at the end of things he just simply realizes that he's in love with Kirsten. Not much of a huge deal is made about it. It's not like, "Kirsten....I love you. SHAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!" *commence dancing and romantic nonsense*

Things are so matter of fact to keep it moving. That's why I can get more out of a year's worth of issues instead of everything rising and falling on some super long ass storyline that gets boring at some point because they keep running in circles. Samnee has really stepped up his game too. When he first got on I didn't mind it, but I was missing Paolo Rivera when they alternated because he's straight awesome. Samnee though has kinda made me forget that. Dude's been on fire lately.

BTW, I'm continuing my collecting run, trying to catch up to Waid's start. However, I wanted to finish Volume 1 (well, stopping with Joe Kelly; I'm not crazy and reading the final issues too). I discovered a weird quirk:

The height of Marvel's 90s popularity is full of big event comics and the like that were supposed to one day be really valuable. Those comics are essentially worthless. However, when Marvel collapsed, they stopped printing. That meant the comics that followed are actually pretty pricey. I ended up having to pay something like $7 for Daredevil 372, while issues that people might care about (although obviously not ancient ones like the first issue) would cost $1. It doesn't help that it was a crossover with Ghost Rider. I'm looking forward to reading it because I wanted to see Mr. Fear before he appeared in Brubaker's run, but I doubt this comic will be worth seven times the amount of others from this time.

Now that I have bought what I wanted to end nocenti's run, I'm ready to begin Waid's run!

So I just finished reading Essential DD volume 6, and now there are a few issues between this and the Miller run, so I have to get them off of ebay as separate issues. I can tell right now it's gonna be a pricey endeavour.

Yeah, I just went to look and see if I could get it on Midtown Comics and came up goose eggs. I'll wish you good luck, although I realize if you get them, it'll take away from the supply for me ;)

Marvel did release a pocektbook edition named marked with murder, it's basically the same issues as in the first volume of frank miller visionaries. With this one, you will only miss like ten issues between essential volume 6 and frank miller's run.

Haha yeah. I bought 2 issues so far, supposedly near mint condition, and with shipping and everything it ended up at around 40 bucks or so.

Thanks for the heads up, but I already have the Miller/Janson omnibus so Marked for murder will just be the same issues as is in that one.

I also just realised that after the MIller run, there are like 200 issues or so that doesn't seem to have been released in a collected edition. Oh boy.

Marvel used to only collect certain stories in trades, and the others were given no thought at all. It really wasn't up until the new millennium, I think in terms of time frame, that they started getting the idea of having TPBs for every storyline in order to get fans following the character better. Unfortunately it's taken some time for them to come around on some lesser collected stories, but that seems like it's changing in both Marvel and DC. Marvel has the Epic Collections that are rolling out now, and I did notice that there are some for Daredevil. Hopefully they will get all of that collected for the fans that want cheaper access to those post-Miller and pre-Marvel Knights stories.

Denny O'Neil has a chunk of issues through Loves Labor Lost (215-217, 219-222, 225-226)
Ann Nocenti has Daredevil Legends Vol. 4: Typhoid Mary (254-257, 259-263) and Lone Stranger (265-273)
D.G. Chichester has The Fall of the Kingpin (297-300), which was originally Last Rites and is frankly probably cheaper to buy that way, and the Daredevil Epic Collection: Fall from Grace, which has Fall from Grace and Tree of Knowledge (319-332 and Annual 10)
And just released is Daredevil Epic Collection: Widow's Kiss with Joe Kelly, Scott Lobdell, and D.G. Chichester (365-380, -1, and Daredevil/Deadpool Annual)

Is it ideal? No. I think Ann Nocenti absolutely deserves one (her two books are awkward because they split storylines, leading to confusing beginnings and weak endings). But it's not completely bare.

Well, blessing if you consider being able to read Fall from Grace to be a blessing :p

BTW, is it too late to change the capitalization in the thread title to make the second D lowercase?

Hopefully they churn out more in the near future so I don't have to spend too much money on single issues :oldrazz:

Yeah there seems to be some smaller collections covering a bit of the rest of volume 1, so that's good.

I was about to make the same joke :cmad:. Nothing written by Chichester can be considered a blessing.

:drl:

I like Last Rites (the Fall of the Kingpin story) although it's certainly not without flaws and issue 304 (34 Hours) is pretty good. But Fall From Grace is a chaotic abomination of a story. It's self-indulgent *********ion of macho fanboyism and marketing gimmicks all thrown in together in a story that is bloated and incoherent. The followup story, Tree of Knowledge, while not exactly good, is at least cohesive and, therefore, a vast improvement (although it's weird at how SHIELD and Hydra-heavy his Daredevil stories are).

So I recieved some issues that I bought on ebay, and I had to pay a stupidly amount of customs or whatever, but oh man were the comics nice. They could have been fresh off the presses for all I knew.

Sometimes, I feel compelled to wonder about the point of working so hard to maintain a secret identity.

Well, blessing if you consider being able to read Fall from Grace to be a blessing :p
The first half is solid, the second half is a fall from grace.

I like what Chichester did before that stupid arc leading to the great looking black costume.
That costume and Kingpin spitting on Matt's grave are good things produced in crap.
