Stephanie

Enjoyed it for the most part. It was interesting at first that Blumhouse didn't want to show this in the theaters, because the first 30 minutes of the movie is kinda incredible. The only actor that was on screen carrying the movie was the main little girl and she was great. They do a pretty good job giving you a mystery to keep you invested. You can't tell whether it's supernatural or it's alien based. In some ways it's kinda similar to A Quiet Place. Once it gets into the 2nd act and Frank Grillo and Anna Torv shows up, the movie gets into what it is really about. Not to spoil it but, after that it kinda goes downhill. It gets a bit cheap and becomes not as sharp as that first act. Overall, it's just decent.

Apostle

I might be bias about it but, this was fantastic. Gareth Evans gets to expand on his horror side from V/H/S 2 to Apostle and he was able to make it look stunning. There's a lot of inspiration he took from other movies about the occult mainly The Wicker Man and others like The Devil's Rain and Kill List. But what he did differently is give some nuances to the cult's governing system. What I like about it is they mostly don't operate like hive mind like so many other movies about cults. As for the performances I thought Dan Stevens killed it, he does a lot of facial acting that adds to the tension. I didn't expect much from Michael Sheen but he was also a highlight as well as Lucy Boynton, who I can see be a bigger star in the future. What this movie kinda hides from the trailers is it gets really strange and really supernatural. Gareth Evans loves creating notable characters designs that you remember from his movies and this is no exception. It's got great imaginary all around. If I had any complaints, it would be the middle might be slow for some, but it really picks up at the last 30 or so minutes. Overall, it's easily one of the best horror movies this year.

Bad Times at the El Royale

It's a extremely fun and stylish slow burn mystery thriller. I think Drew Goddard took what people loved about The Cabin in the Woods and applied it to the murder/crime mystery genre. To me this was like an interesting mash up of the new Murder on the Orient Express movie with The Hateful Eight. In fact there's a lot going on in the story structure that reminded me of a Quentin Tarantino movie, but not as dense. The cast they got here all did a great job with some surprises like Dakota Johnson (who can actually act for once). Chris Hemsworth doesn't really show up until the final act and when he does, he gives some of his best work to date. It's almost like the whole movie stopped for Chris Hemsworth. I think what I love about the movie the most outside of the performances is the cinematography and production design. As much bad sh** that happens in the El Royale, I would love to stay in a hotel that looked like that. Overall, it's fun all around.

First Man

It will be interesting to see how many people wont be into this because it's not a straight forward telling of how America went to the moon and how America is great. It's far from that in the best way possible. In fact, this movie is actually a small scale story of a person going through grief and depression...who just happens to be Neil Armstrong. The movie isn't going for accuracy of what exactly transpired during the 60s with the space race...despite trying their hardest to show off all the little details in the mechanics that went along. To me, this is more closer to Tree of Life than Apollo 13 (and obviously done much better). Ryan Gosling gives a cold and calculated performance, but unlike some of his other movies, it adds a lot to the story. I thought it was great. Claire Foy isn't giving a whole lot to do in the movie, but every scene she's in she's phenomenal. The rest of the cast is a who's who of great character actors that you've seen in other great movies and tv. They all did a pretty good job with it. Damien Chazelle did a great job directing it especially on making you feel very claustrophobic during certain scenes. The music was also on point. And as for the scene about the flag, it's there but it's not the main focus for obvious reasons. If I have any complaints, it would be it could have been a little shorter. Overall, Damien Chazelle did it again.

Venom ( theater ).
I was entertained, it is not a great comic book movie but it was not an abomination either.

Ant-Man And the Wasp

I really enjoyed this. The shrinking/enlarging stuff was entertaining, and Lilly was bad ass in the fighting scenes (and a great character over all). Peña was great as well, and I also have to say the little girl that played Scott's daughter was not only super adorable but really good.

I personally had some laughs regarding the "truth serum" parts. We've rarely seen La Pfeiffer on the big screen the last 10 years, so I was hoping she'd have more screen time here, but oh well. Looking forward to the 3rd one.

She'll apparently be co-starring with Jolie soon in Maleficent 2 :yay:
