Ad Astra

It's quite possibly the ultimate dad movie. James Gray does a fantastic job on creating the world and the futuristic set up for the movie. I thought they took the more realistic approach with space travel and space colonies than Interstellar did. It's got a very 70's aesthetic to it, both in tone and pacing. The first half is more fast paced and delivers more of the action while the 2nd half slows down a lot. It's also incredibly well shot and they used the CGI perfectly. The cast was effective enough and Brad Pitt does do a pretty good job overall. However, I will say the 2nd half is extremely ponderous to the point where you wonder if you're watching a Terrence Malick movie. And much like Blade Runner, I don't think the movie needed a narration. I thought the story was fine for what it is, but it doesn't have a big crescendo moment, it just kinda leaves you there. Overall, it's a solid space drama, but I wish they had more plot.

Rambo: Last Blood

Sadly generic. They essentially copied and pasted the script for Taken and instead of Eastern Europeans, they changed it to the Mexican cartel. It's a far cry from First Blood where it had something to say about PTSD and Nam veterans coming back home. The movie goes to the typical route by having Mexican stereotypes at all times which does nothing but reinforce the Trumpian ideas. Even taking the politics out of it, the villains are just so poorly written and ultimately becomes cannon fodder for Rambo. The story is so simple, it makes Miss Bala look like an Oscar winner by comparison. The only saving grace this movie has from being one of the worst movies of the year is the 3rd act where Rambo becomes Jason Voorhees and Kevin McCallister. It's almost like they had this idea first and created a terrible movie around it. Much like the last Rambo movie, it's gory as hell. Overall, despite the action at the end, the movie is trite with no sense of awareness.

Between Two Ferns: The Movie

It's breezy and fun. It essentially takes the mockumentary approach to the Between Two Ferns skits. It very much feels like an extension Scott Aukerman's Comedy Bang! Bang! show and humor. I thought most of the cameos were solid, they even had a couple of surprises I didn't expect. Overall, It was pretty damn good.

It's interesting to see Atkinson in a subdued serious role as Inspector Maigret.

I was very pleasantly surprised at Atkinson's performance as Maigret.

There is this theater up here in Portland OR called the Hollywood Theatre. They get all kinds of movies on 35mm and 70mm and have special guests some times. I go there so much, it's like my home away from home.
I envy you. Sounds like a fantastic place.

Place just sounds better and better!

It's amazing to be honest. They do special showings too for certain events. Like when Adam West passed away they showed a 35mm print of Batman: The Movie. After Caligari ended I went to a bar down the street for a few drinks and am currently back at the theater to watch a double feature for Stephen King's bday. Christine and Maximum Overdrive.

A few months back they had a Friday and Saturday night feature showing House on Haunted Hill and then House of Wax. Both nights Vincent Price's daughter was in attendance and talked a bit about him and did a Q and A. Only theater in the greater Portland area that can show 70mm prints. Took them a few years apparently to track down parts and out the projector together piece by piece.
