CHIEN (2017)
Directed by Samuel Benchetrit.
Chien ("Dog") is a dark and surreal French-Belgian comedy.
We follow Jacques Blanchot, an ordinary guy, without relief, who sees his family and professional life explode. Passive about his social decline, he gets closer and closer to a sadistic and humiliating pet shop owner...
And you can guess what happens next. I think...
Without being a snob, the film is not for everyone. By design.
It deal with subjects such as depression and existential crises. Questions like:
What defines a "good life"? What is a "dog's life"? And, in the end, isn't one worth the other? Thus, the whole film maintains a permanent sense of uneasiness that can make the viewing uncomfortable to some. But at the same time, and this is where the charm lies, this dark and gloomy world that is created allows for a certain form of absurdity. That brings some poetry and gives the whole thing a fable-like quality. A bleak one, but still.
I was really seduced by this film. Like said, there's a real work on the atmosphere, with a particular care given to the framing and the rhythm. There's a true vision behind it and that's what I love in movies.
Also, Vincent Macaigne in the lead role and the rest of the
(very limited) cast are absolutely perfect.
I don't know if this film is available in a translated/subtitled version, but if anything in what I have just briefly described appeals to you, then go for it! It was an unexpected and very cool surprise for me, and I can only hope it could be the same for you.
