What I've seen since my last post:

some notes:

You Won't Be Alone: low budget farthouse nonsense at its worst. Very little dialogue, repetitive mumbling narration of pseudo-poetic nonsense, goofy makeup, dumb ending, blood but but horror (no suspense, setups & payoffs lacking), constant extreme closeup photography, couldn't wait for it to be over.

The Bob's Burgers Movie: I'm not a fan of the show but friends wanted to see it so that's how I saw it. The movie isn't bad but it's not something I'd ever revisit. Series fans will get more out of it than I did.

Dressed to Kill and Sisters: De Palma has a reputation for not being what he used to be, but is it deserved when he made stuff like this in his early years before Scarface (an actual good movie).

The Owners: This was a pleasant surprise of a home invasion thriller I found on Hulu starring Maisie Williams.

Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin and Love and Monsters: The third acts of each movie saved them from a thumbs down.

Firestarter: Don't know why they remade this. All the characters act really weird and unnatural in it, though some of that is part of plot.

The Thirteenth Floor: I remember liking this movie like 20 years ago but on a rewatch it did not hold up for me.

Well acted but fairly convoluted thriller.

Surprisingly decent DTV thriller with 2 easy to root for leads that respond to an intense situation like the regular people they're supposed to be while Cusak gives an understated performance as the villain.

Cool concept, zero budget and garbage execution.

The talented and classy Diane Lane leads this cyber thriller that's disturbing subject matter has only grown in relevance, there are plenty of stretches in plausibility but it's got plenty of intrigue and tension.

7.8/10

This movie genuinely made me queasy. It’s a more responsible version of torture film in that you actually feel sympathy and concern for the characters. It is very unnerving when the killer gets them.

Blood: The Last Vampire (2000)

Anime horror short (just 48 mins, including titles) set in 1966, about a Japanese girl named Saya, who hunts vampires on behalf of a mysterious US govt organisation. This organisation gets word of a series of vampire attacks at the American Yokota Air Base, Western Tokyo, and Saya is sent in undercover as a pupil at the base's high school (gotta find an excuse for that school uniform), to find and destroy whoever's responsible...

The digital animation is fantastic (especially as this is over 20 years old). Virtually every scene takes place either at night or during overcast days - sometimes with heavy rain - and those backdrops are stunning. Character animation is very good. Character design is unfortunately uneven; Saya looks hot and badass as she wields her katana, and the vampires look very impressive, but some other characters look more basic and generic.

The story is nothing remarkable, but it's atmospheric, and there's plenty of action. We pretty much hit the ground running with Saya in full flow, so we have to piece some things together as we go (such as who she is, how she can do what she does). And whilst we get a short-term resolution to the situation that Saya was tasked with, the movie does end abruptly with a feeling that there was more to tell (I've seen claims that it was originally intended as the second of a three-part OVA series, but the budget disappeared and they were only able to animate the middle portion - which seems plausible). The voice performances are very good. Btw, one point of interest; this was the first anime made almost entirely in English, with Japanese subtitles (the few times characters speak Japanese, we get English subtitles).

This movie is fine as far as it goes. It looks great, the action is well done, the heroine is kick-ass, and the vampires are seriously cool. It just needed more. 7/10
