There were obvious errors in the estimate profit totals regarding merchandise. The studios were estimated to have received $5 million and $25 million in merchandise fees, respectively for DOFP and ASM2. But Marvel didn't approve of any tie-ins for the X-Men sequel and didn't share any of the Spidey money with Sony.

If all other numbers are correct, that would put DOFP at around $72 million and drop Spidey down to $45. This certainly shows why Sony was so hot to make a deal with Marvel, as that $45 million would have very likely evaporated with AMS3. And the relatively low # for DOFP shows why FOX is desperate to expand the brand into TV.

Here's some food for thought... Is that $77M that DOFP made before or after Marvel's cut because if it's before Marvel's 7%-10% then ASM2 might actually be #3 when it's all said and done.

Wait... The biggest, best X-men movie ever only made 7 million more than Amazing Spider-man 2, which is widely known to be a financial disappointment?
Hahahhahaah. Wow.

I think that Marvel's cut is closer to 1% than 7-10% for the X-Men movies. Avi got his arse handed to him on that one.

I don't think it was suppose to include merchandising. Besides those Carl's Jr. commercials Fox got are a pittance to what Marvel made off of Spidey, Cap and GOTG last year.

Merchandise is the last line before Total Revenues. And FOX's payment for the Carl's Jr. commercials came in the form of free advertising. I doubt that cash exchanged hands.

Well, in this article: http://money.cnn.com/magazines/business2/business2_archive/2006/05/01/8375925/

It says Marvel was getting between 2% - 10% but there were more studios pimping out Marvel characters back then. Avi says that Marvel only got $25k from the first Blade movie but since then got about $75M from the first two Spider-man movies which is considerably more than 1% but still nothing compared to the $1.6 billion the 2 films made combined. (Though that's not straight profit)

I am a little surprised about that DOFP number. Would have thought they made more. FOX has got to get those domestic numbers up higher than 233 mil. Thats still underwhelming to me considering the 2006 film made slightly more without the adjusted numbers. Thats 8 years ago. And they brought the gang all back too. Apocalypse will certainly tell us where the X franchise is going.

I would think that GOTG and Cap2's bottom line would be even higher if that's the case.

Does anyone have a link that shows the breakdown of how much Marvel/Disney made from movie merch in 2014 just to see if this adds up?

I can envision a scenario in which Apocalypse is the last big budget X Men film, at least for a while. We will likely see some dropoff from DOFP, and with the wide scale destruction we've been promised I don't think the budget will be greatly reduced.

Most of the future confirmed and rumored projects - FFINO, Deadpool, Gambit, X-Force, X-Factor TV show - are much smaller in scale than what WB and Marvel are doing with their connected universes. It may be a case in which FOX is zigging while the Big Two zag.

For me, tracking box office and revenue is of importance when a sequel's status is still up in the air.

All did well enough to warrant sequels and then some (obviously the MCU is still going, and FOX is moving forward with Gambit, Apocalypse, Wolverine, a 2018 film that's rumored to be X-Men-related, and possibly X-Force) so I'm happy on all fronts.

(Well, ASM2 didn't do well enough, but Spider-Man's story will be told in the MCU)

Indeed. Don't expect any of the people who attended the Fox-men parade last year to speak on it though...

Yeah, I'm curious to see if Fox will even change that release date since the competition is a lot steeper next year then it was last year. Heck there's barely room to breath in Summer of 2016. This isn't Maleficent and Godzilla. It's Angry Birds, Wonderland2, Turtles2 and a Seth Rogen cartoon that's fighting for box office relevance.

I think Apocalypse will do just fine, but I've said before and I'll say again that I don't think the X-franchise (at least in it's current form) has as much steam left as some might hope. These box office results don't do much to change my mind.

Whoda thunk Rocket Racoon would outperform Spider-Man and the X-Men COMBINED?!

Guardians made the studio almost triple what X-men and Spider-man did.
That speaks so much to not only the power of the Marvel brand with consumers, but how well they know how to budget and market their properties. They are known for being cheap, but damned if it doesn't work.

The depressing thing about that list for me is Transformers: Age of Extinction's placement at #1. I cant' believe people are still flocking to see those movies.

For what it's worth, it's only due to the growing international audience. Domestically I think people are tiring of that franchise, it's been on the decline since the second one I believe.

If Godzilla is getting another movie then everyone above it is fine lol. I am sure all the movies made more money and will make more money in the long run.

Not sure about these numbers. I thought Sony made a lot less for ASM 2. Is the Xmen budget before or after tax rebates. Also Disney admitted that Guardians went over budget according to this

http://www.forbes.com/sites/csylt/2...of-the-galaxy-was-over-budget-at-232-million/

Something is not right. Anyway, I'm happy we are getting sequels to Cap, X men, TMNT, Guardians and Apes. That's all that matters to me.

I'm just curious what the point of all this box office dick measuring. All I care about is whether a potential franchise I liked made enough to get sequels. Heck, Godzilla did well enough for Toho to start making Godzilla movies again.

We're comic book fans. This is what we do. It's interesting to look at what each studio is doing with their properties, and the rewards they are reaping for their work.

A few thoughts. Didn't asm2 only make a profit of like 15 million? I think the 70.377 was before over head so these must all be before over head. Second guardians made like 2.75 times has much has days of futures past. 3erd if asm2 only made like 15 million after over head and with interstellar make like 23 million less then asm2 before over head dose that mean that interstellar didn't really make like any thing?

Hahahhahaah. Wow.

Just shows how popular sm really is that a movie that was consider bad and a franchise that has had 3 not good movies in a row only did a little worse then a franchise that has had 2 good/great movies in a row.

Yeah not only 8 years but no 3d like DOFP had. 2016 has more big movies then any another year before its just crazy but even with that said i do think it will go up at least a little. I think there are going to be a lot of movies in 2016 that make like 800 million to like 1 billion WW.

How do they measure these numbers ? TWS says 166 but its total BO was 714 and usually they measure profit total BO minus budgetx2 so shouldn't its profit be around 360m ? excluding bluray/dvd etc. sales which is a lot more.

Says most people when they're not too happy with the measurements. If it's not that serious to you then why click the link to the thread in the first place.....

Can't sweat if there's no activity.

Me, I personally want everything with Marvel sooner than later so I'm looking at what serves my best interest in the long run.
