When people say 'no pun intended'...

Except for when it isn't.

Merge with my wisdom thread. I give nothing away for free:mad:

well...it doesn't necessarily mean it's intended, it just means whoever wrote or said it acknowledged that other people might think he intended to make it a pun...

only when people think they're being really clever . . .

It only really works in real-life, when you really do accidentally make a pun.

I think I'd actually say that most of the time, the pun really isn't intended

I'm aware of the official rationale as to why the term is used, but when there's a thread titled "plz post pics of naked boobies" that's reached its 34th page and one guy says "wow guys, you sure are milking (no pun intended) this thread for all its worth", that pun's about as unintentional as JFK's assasination.

If you realize there was a pun, after you have said/written what you have, and leave it there with "no pun intended" then you are trying to be funny/witty, but have failed miserably. You are on about the same level as Bob Saget.

... the pun's pretty much always intended, isn't it?

Respond by hacking them with an axe and say "No offence".
