Which album means most to you and why?

I have to thank Deep Purple for a certain compilation that came out back in 1994. I was 18 at the time. The band would change the way I look at music forever. And I've never looked back since. They really opened my ears. I abandoned the crap on the radio and went out to discover the music for myself.

Deep Purple helped me appreciate live music not to mention many other genres including classical.

But when it comes to certain albums I can't choose only one.

At the moment:

Marillion - Marbles (Steve Hogarth is incredible)

Love the band as a whole. They have that uncanny ability to have a song for nearly every emotion. Beautiful stuff. Coldplay has nothing on these guys. They wished they were Marillion. Not even Thom Yorke could touch h.

Just my $0.02.

"it was all a dream"

I used to read word up magazines
Salt and Pepper and Heavy D up in the limosuines

First, Evanescence has 1000 billion times more talent than any of the bands currently on the charts. At least they produce songs, not some raspy speaking and orgasm sounds while will.i.am or some such person says 'yeah' and 'uuuh' in the background and repeats their names 20 times.

Second, don't laugh and call me 'emo' when I say that the album that has had the most influence in my life is Linkin Park's Hybrid Theory. It was the soundtrack to my life for almost 2 years, not for anything personal, but because it was my inspiration at a time when I was having a... creative awakening.

The question of the thread is 'Which album means the most to you and why?". I said Evanescence because when I first heard them, I was in a crucial period of my life. I was 14 years old and the only music I was familiar with was rap because all my friend in jr. high listened to it, so I did too to it in. But when I was finally on my own, I discovered Evanescence, and I liked them so much that I brought their album. Not only was it the first album I ever decided to buy on my own, but it was also the first time in my life that I was making decisions that weren't influenced by the people around me. My mom didn't want to let me buy it, but I still did. This album means the most to me because it symbolizes a period in my life where I was beginning to move into adulthood, and learning to make decisions on my own.

I can easily bash some of you for the albums you posted, or laugh at it's meaning to you, but I'm not going to do that. That's not who I am or what I do. I recognize that everyone has their own taste in music and have gone through their own trials and tribulations, and in most cases, music was a big relief at that time, thus it has a huge importance to that person. Though I don't understand why some of you can't seem to understand that on your own.

I was hoping this thread would be full of sweet stories. Instead it's become an argument about relative musical tastes. Who cares what people like if it has meaning to them and a story behind that meaning!

That's what you get for thinking anything is going to be "full of sweet" anything on the hype, lol.

I can't choose just one.

This album is damn near perfect. A lot of rappers rap about dealing coke and what not but Jay-Z did it with flair, realisticly. He raps about stress and his regrets and his transformation into somebody he didn't really wanted to become but the money had a hold on him.

Eminem used to be my favorite rapper and this is definitely his best album. He's a lyrical genius. Eminem is at his best when he's struggling, broke and can't deal with his problems and when he made this album he was all of the above.

KanyeWestTheCollegeDropout.jpg

This album was a breath of fresh air. Kanye wasn't rapping about dealing coke, shooting people or having a lot money. He was rapping about college life and i can relate to that. Besides the beats on this album are hella dope.

No, they just whine and play their instruments really loud, Same ****, differnet *******.

I had never heard of this group, but one day I just so happen to turn it to MTV2 and they had like a 30 minute concert special on and I watched the last 10 minutes of it, enjoyed it bought the album. It's not my favorite album of all time but when i listened to this album the most was when I was in a new relationship (ended up married to the same girl) I had just started my own company and I just remember listening to this album over and over, it has some songs that make you think of the past, present and future. To this day I've never heard a song by them that isn't on this album.

U2 - The Best of 1980-1990. It introduced me to U2, and changed my musical taste forever.

janet jackson's velvet rope got me through some times but i can't even bring myself to listen to it anymore.

Hmmm...I was going to say that same album. Very emotional and very touching. Yet, I can still listen to it. I still play it when I'm down and after an emotional rollercoaster and some feeling worse, it brings me back up after playing it.

I credit this album with a lot.

Until then I was just a Heavy Metal Vomit Rocker. It opened my eyes to alot of different genres.

Floyd: "Meddle"
It means the most to me for nostalgia reasons. Its like a vinyl time machine for memories.

Such an amazing album. "Politics As Usual" is the track that made me fall in love with Jay's music. He has put out some nice stuff since then (Blueprint, Black Album, American Gangster...) but Reasonable Doubt will always be his crowning achievement.

couldnt leave these out either...

too sick. too too sick.

Naughty by Nature's self titled album. I was coming up when G-Funk and West Cost hip hop were taking over the world. I wasn't really feeling it. I was about to just give up on rap all together. My friend from across the street had Naughty's self titled album and he didn't like it. One day he asked if I wanted it. Sure, I said. Who was I to turn down free music.

Anyway I took that home and jammed it over and over. It started a love affair with Naughty by Nature. Yeah, we all remember "O.P.P.", but I'm talking real Naughty--"Yoke The Joker", "Wickedest Man Alive", "Everything's Gonna Be Alright", "Pin the Tail on the Donkey", "Everyday All Day" and the killer "Uptown Anthem". I was so close to abandoning hip hop when I heard this album. To this day I still wear my Naughty gear with pride.

I still can't get enough of this album. In a culture where youth and the newest of the new is appreciated, I still bump this 17 year old album in my whip all the time. I have mad love for 19NaughtyIII, Poverty's Paradise, 19NaughtyNine: Nature's Fury and even iicons(I must be the only one) but their debut album is my all time favorite for ushering in the time of my life when I became a bona fide hip hop head. Now, I'm White. I mean bird poop on a snow covered glacier white. I play hockey and snowboard. I'm not one of those obnoxious "wi***er" types, the ones who equate hip hop with "being Black" (insulting in my opinion) but I have no problem screaming out "Naughty for life".
