Queen+ Paul Rodgers NEW single & album details

Dude, you're making these either/or deividing lines at the wrong place.

I TOTALLY agree with your statement here:

But you just took it too far when you said:

You don't have to be so extremist.
It's much simpler to be accurate.

Queen was - Brain May, Freddie Mercury, Roger Taylor and John Deacon.

It was a band, or 4 dudes, not "one man".
3/4ths of Queen still want to play the old songs they wrote or helped write...but 1/4th of Queen died, so they got another dude and kept the name, and still do their old songs.

That, you can have negative or mixed feelings about, for sure...but you can't say that Freddie Mercury "ALONE" "was" Queen.
It's not true.
If that was true, then you could have:

Freddie Mercury: Vocals, Piano
C.C. DeVille: Guitar
Sid Vicious: Bass Guitar
Meg White: Drums

...and it would sound just as good as Queen.
Absurd, okay?
Okay.

Okay your 'Band members' at the bottom make a good point. What i'm trying to say, Maybe not too clearly is while the rest of the band are very important in the dynamic that is Queen, Since Freddie died to me there just not Queen. Freddie was a massive part (again for me at least) and without him the band will be no where near as good.

I'm sure with Rogers they may even attract fans who were not Queen fans, but for me Freddie was such and important part without him its just not the same.

I mean some bands get new members and they add a new dynamic to the band, a fresh energy and while you miss the old member you can still enjoy and appeciate the new member. With Rogers i just dont get that, i admit from what i've seen the man tries his best but personally i cannot help but compare him to Mercury and for me theres just no comparison.

Like i said before assomeone already stated i think it wouldhave been better had the 2 remaining members of Queen along with Rogers should have made a new band with a new name.

What I like about this new group they have going is that with Paul Rogers they haven't tried to replace Freddie in ever facet, they know he's irreplacable in certain aspects (voice for example). So they haven't gone for someone who trys to sound like Freddie, they've gone for someone who has their own voice and sure it may not fit all the Queen songs that Freddie could sing, but who's voice could, he;s a damn good singer anyway.

Kinda like when AC/DC recruited Brian Johnson after Bon Scott died, they didn't go for a carbon copy type of frontman.

Well, technically they are a new band now. Considering they have a new album with new songs coming out.

Brian May made a comment once about how they were thinking of changing their name, but I guess they couldn't think of a good one.

George Michael did a pretty bang-up job at that Freddie Mercury Tribute concert way back when. He's the only guy I've ever heard cover Freddie's parts perfectly.

Actually, Johnson has said that his performance on "Back In Black" was him trying to do his best Bon Scott impression.

Yeah George Michael did do a damn fine job at the Freddie tribute.

Johnson said that? hehe I didn't know that :oldrazz:. I know there was talk of Bon being "present" during the recording of BIB, but not about Johnson doind a Bon impression!

Very true. I'm not really a fan of George but from all that tribute concert he was one of the best along with Bowie.

Well I'm glad they kept the name. As far as that they are a new band...I guess you could use that argument about every decade they played in. Not saying that's bad at all, just saying they did change styles a bit as the decades went on.

Yes, yes they did. :)

Yep. It sort of set him up for the mangled voice he's got today because it set the expectation that he'd sing like that from now on. Granted, he's got (or at least had) one of the most distinct and powerful voices in rock and roll (who doesn't immediately know they're listening to AC/DC when they hear either Johnson OR Scott's voice?), but he's paid a price for it in terms of the health of his voice over the long haul. He really didn't sing quite like that before he got the gig with AC/DC. To his credit, he did pen most of they lyrics to Back In Black both as a tribute to Scott as well as trying to write like he thought Bon would have.

Very true. I'm not really a fan of George but from all that tribute concert he was one of the best along with Bowie.

I remember there was a HUGE push from fans for Michael to join Queen full time after that concert because of his performance. He knocked it out of the park. He should have listened to the fans because his career has been in the toilet ever since.

Really, i never knew that. as you said ithink it would have been better if he did. His careen kinda started going down hill when he admitted he was gay (not that theres anything wrong with that, before some one calles me a homophobe) his toilet incident never helped either.

Taylor and May obviously wanted to explore some different musical directions with a different voice in Rodgers. I just wish they'd spent less time butchering old Queen classics and moved right on to new material that suited Rodgers' voice and style. And I wish they'd quit calling themselves "Queen + Paul Rodgers". Call yourselves just "Queen" or get a new name. I think it's safe to say that most people have figured out at this point that Freddie isn't back with the band.

Hmm there's something wrong with this. Oh, I got it. It's not Queen. It's May & Taylor plus Some Loser.. Sorry folks, Deacon retired and Mercury died back in 1991.

Some loser? Quite the rock and roll historian, aren't you? :whatever:

So essentially you'd tell Brian May "I don't care if you wrote We Will Rock You or not, you guys ain't playing it!"?

Music must be the only profession where, if any number of variables pops up, people demand that you cannot continue to use your own work, the very art you created and perfected for some 3 decades MUST be retired for good.

Ok so let's say the never performed a single Queen song (wait, does that mean they also couldn't do the Queen tracks Freddie *didn't* sing on?) and just went with the 14 songs they have now. So.....um, their concerts will last just under an hour then. Not exactly a wise use of their time.

Someone brought up Freddie's solo work. Have any of you guys heard "Mr. Bad Guy" at all? How cheesy and dated it sounds? Now listen again to something like "Made in Heaven" (also from Freddie solo album) that was drastically re-worked by the surviving members of Queen and tell me the boys didn't improve Freddie's song by miles.

Mercury = Queen? Hardly. This ain't the Eagles we're talking about here where two guys ruled the roost. It was, without a doubt, an equal partnership. Freddie's loss is a great one but not big enough for me to have the balls to say they can't continue using the name Queen (which they all worked hard to make a recognizable name) or play the songs they wrote.

I'm really having trouble figuring out why you responded to my post because none of what you wrote pertains to anything I wrote other than I said that I'd have rathered they pursued the new material with Rodgers sooner rather than later because I don't feel that Rodgers' voice fits the old Queen songs well at all. I also wrote that they should just call themselves Queen...not Queen + Paul Rodgers, or get a new name altogether because people probably know by now that Freddie hasn't rejoined the band. I didn't mention Freddie's solo albums. I never said he WAS Queen. Ever. Work on your reading comprehension and stop mixing other people's posts up with mine.

Let's not get touchy.

You'll notice that I said "someone brought up Freddie's solo work," I did not say YOU did. If you had actually taken the time to READ what I said it would have been drastically obvious when I was refering specifically to YOU and when I was responding to other posts. So as George Carlin would say, calm down and have some dip.

When you quote someone on these boards, it's largely regarded as you responding directly to them, thus the strong response from me. It's probably not a good idea to address other people's posts when responding to another person. Just a cultural tip about this place you might keep in mind. However, you still completely misread what I wrote and added a lot of meaning to it that wasn't there either implicitly or explicitly, so I'm not the only one guilty of not fully reading and comprehending what someone else meant. ;)

Yup. Actually, most of the songs on that album were finished after Freddie died and they are still phenomenal.

And Brian Mays "Too Much Love Will Kill You" is far superior to Freddie's version.

aHAHahaha....slap fight over Queen......to the Death, let loose the Dogs of Nerd!!!

"THE COSMOS ROCKS”

QUEEN + PAUL RODGERS FIRST STUDIO ALBUM

EMI/Parlophone Release September 15, Hollywood Records (October 14)

“Our teachers were The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, blues & soul…”

The first thing you notice about The Cosmos Rocks, the much anticipated first album from rock legends Queen + Paul Rodgers is “all tracks written by Queen and Paul Rodgers”…”produced and performed by Brian May, Paul Rodgers and Roger Taylor” (indicating that between them they played all instruments, including bass - Paul and Brian swapping duties - in case you were going to ask). This is obviously not a case of Rodgers lightly stepping in to fill a vocal gap, as some might have been drawn to assume would be the case when the three of them got into the studio together.

No, this is a full bodied, group endeavour: May, Rodgers and Taylor in a totally democratic union, even down to equally sharing the credits. The album’s dedication to legendary Queen front man 'Freddie Mercury,' (you’ll also see thanks credits to John Deacon and Paul Kossoff) shows the band mates still feel his presence strongly enough to dedicate this entirely new work to him, nearly 13 years on from Queen’s last studio album.

You also wonder how Rodgers who takes control as main vocalist on all thirteen tracks here feels about his work being dedicated to the man whose fans still worship at the altar of the pre-Mercury demise Queen.

But then thinking about it, it doesn’t seem quite so strange. Brian May and Roger Taylor have, after all, never shied from acknowledging the mighty presence Mercury provided to the band on stage and the wonders of his extraordinary creativity in the studio. Mostly, they acknowledge how even today, they still miss ‘dear Fred’.

In the case of Rodgers, he can stand assured in the fact that Mercury always rated him as one of the best rock voices of his time. It is public record that Mercury would make a point of dropping into the Marquee or any number of other London venues when Rodgers was performing with his band Free. Mercury often in his past acknowledged Free’s Fire and Water as one of the albums to most influence Queen. On top of this, Rodgers has now played enough sold-out and wildly received dates as Queen + Paul Rodgers to know that it works, and that the acceptance is there. You only had to be there at last month’s Nelson Mandela 90th birthday concert to feel the heat from the audience to the band’s blinding set.

It all makes perfect sense when you get the opportunity to see what the band have to say about the sessions:

“We went in and played, every day, and ALL kinds of things happened, little bits of chemistry happening between us. It’s good, organic music.

“There's a lot of guitar orchestras and some of our old trademarks, but at the core of it you'll hear the three of us playing. People really, truly playing together in the studio - you don't get that much these days. But, you will get it on their new album.

“Do they still call them 'albums'? I don't even know. But this is really, we believe, an Album in the old sense of the word - something you can put on and listen to all the way through, and it takes you on a journey ... the subjects and moods in it are widely spaced - but nevertheless, a challenge to the listener to put his day on hold for an hour or so, be drawn in, make connections, and experience something new.

“These days it has seemed to us that few people have this in mind - CD's by large tend to be a collection of songs, often produced by different teams, assembled in random sequence - with the idea that folks will shuffle the order on their iPods anyway. Of course you always have that option! But our teachers were the Beatles, Hendrix, blues + soul and ... you know where we’re going with this. “

The Cosmos Rocks was recorded and mixed at Taylor’s The Priory studio between November 2007 and August 2008, and co-produced and engineered by Joshua J Macrae, Justin Shirley-Smith and Kris Fredriksson. It marks the first album of newly recorded material from Queen + Paul Rodgers since they first set out on the road in 2005, and the first Queen studio album since 1995.

A first single from the album, “C-lebrity” is released September 8 in enhanced CD, 7”, and digital formats. Versions contain exclusive performances of Queen + Paul Rodgers live performances of “Show Must Go On” and “Fire and Water” filmed during Q + PR’s 2005 Japanese tour.

The track, according to Roger Taylor – and seemingly much in keeping with many on The Cosmos Rocks – is the writers’ skew on the times in which we live: " ’C-lebrity’ is really a comment on the current concept of fame - success and all that goes with it. Getting your face on TV is enough - talent doesn't really enter into the equation. ‘Celebrity’ is an overused and devalued word today. I think the song shows we have lost none of the humour of Queen!”

Other tracks on The Cosmos Rocks include "Cosmos Rockin’”, "Time To Shine”, "Still Burnin'” (a mission statement of why artists are compelled to create), "Small”,"“Warboys”, "We Believe”, "Call Me”, "Voodoo”, "Some Things That Glitter”, "Through The Night”, "Say It's Not True” (a new version of the track donated to Nelson Mandela’s 46664 HIV Aids campaign), and "Surf's Up, School's Out”.

The album is released in three physical formats: standard CD, deluxe package which includes additional DVD featuring 15 highlight performances by Queen + Paul Rodgers from the band’s Super Live in Japan concert recorded live at Saitama Super Arena, Tokyo on 27th October 2005, along with double gate-fold vinyl release. The album will also have a special digital release including bonus tracks.

Coinciding with the release of The Cosmos Rocks, Queen + Paul Rodgers embark on a 33-date Europe and Northern Eurasia tour beginning mid-September. The tour reaches the UK on October 10 with 11 dates including two at London 02 and the tour’s final date at Wembley Arena on November 8.

PRESS RELEASE: C-LEBRITY

Queen and Paul Rodgers European Tour
Press Release: C-lebrity

Want to be a face on TV ?
Want to be a C-lebrity ?

QUEEN + PAUL ROGERS
New single – 'C-LEBRITY’

Release date September 8, 2008
(DIGITAL & PHYSICAL FORMATS)

'C-lebrity’ is the brand new single from Queen + Paul Rodgers. Taken from the forthcoming album 'The Cosmos Rocks’ (release date Sept 15th), 'C-lebrity’ was written and produced by Brian May, Paul Rodgers and Roger Taylor.

Many of Queen’s best known songs have been written in humour, and 'C-lebrity’ follows in this pattern; it is a comment on the celebrity-driven times in which we live where the myriad of reality-based tv shows are producing a generation of C-lebrities.

The track received its first airing as an exclusive on TV’s Al Murray’s Happy Hour, since when, according to Brian May, “we went back in and roughed up the studio version a bit. I think it gives a fair idea of the kind of energy on the album.”

It is a subject on which each of the band has a view to share:

Roger Taylor: “C-lebrity is really a comment on the current concept of fame – success and all that goes with it. Getting your face on TV is enough – talent doesn’t really enter into the equation. ‘Celebrity’ is an overused and devalued word today.”

Paul Rodgers adds: “I see the song as Rogers’ take on the increasing emphasis on fame for its own sake. It’s quite ironic that Andy Warhol’s statement that everyone will have fifteen minutes of fame is becoming something of a reality, although it may be down to fifteen seconds in today’s world of instant communication.”

'The Cosmos Rocks Tour’ begins in Europe mid-September before rolling into the UK for the following shows:

OCTOBER
10th Nottingham Arena,
11th Glasgow SECC,
13th London O2,
14th Cardiff Arena,

NOVEMBER
