I was ready to claim Crisis on Infinite Earths, but thinking some more it was actually Knightfall when Bane broke the Bat. It's not my favourite storyline (it doesn't even come close) but it really shocked me when it happened. I remember putting that issue down in disbelief and just sitting there, stunned.

Does anyone else have particularly strong memories of their first reading of a particular DC comic?

I recently heard BOF’s podcast on Knightfall and it brought back memories. Unfortunately I was in grad school at the time and was behind in reading and my roommate spoiled the back breaking.

To answer your very good question, off the top of my head it would be Dick’s apparent death in Forever Evil.

This one. It kills my soul a little everytime I think about it. :(

Flashpoint was released shortly after my father passed away. I remember crying at Bruce reading the letter from Thomas.

I think it's GL rebirth back in, what, 2005 ? I was rebuilding my life after a breakdown and a break-up, and seeing Hal in this hollow city, because Coast City had almost no inhabitants, felt just the same as me living in empty suburbs.THE GL COrps coming back to life was a real mirror.
The biggest impact was also V forVendetta if you count it in DC. I read it, you know, standing against the shelves in a book shop, over several days, and I suddenly thought : "Man, we can achieve THAT with a comics?!"

I somehow managed to own 3 DC titles. One GL comic featuring Kyle Raynor, an Impulse issue, and some Flash story with an alternate universe Barry whose suit resembled the Quantum Ranger. Said alternate universe Barry ends up in the "real world".
