So I'm horrible with names. Problem is my name is super memorable and lots of people know me from my various extracurricular activities. So I usually handle it with vagueness by saying things like "homie", "chica", "partner", etc. Surprisingly I don't get called on it much and I usually try to pay attention if they introduce themselves to someone else or someone else says their name and at least try to remember it going forward.

I do this because I feel like if I say I forgot their name and ask them then it would make the person feel bad. There are folks I see all the time that I still have no idea what their names are.

My question for all my fellow Hypesters is this:

Which is more rude, telling someone you forgot their name and asking again or just pretending you know their name and keeping it really vague?

How do you handle these types of situations?

Learn to pay closer attention.

I have no issue paying attention. I constantly throw/host/DJ events on a regular basis. I meet mass quantities of people on a very regular basis. Not sure what you do with your life but if paying close attention was the answer this wouldn't be a problem.

I'm in your case, I don't remember some people name, people that I see almost every day at work...well, usually I ask a close colleague the name of the person.

You are upfront and say you forgot the name. Simple. Honesty is the best policy.

Its a memory issue. Not an attention issue. Some people are just bad with names. Some are bad with faces.

As for the OP's question, if I was tereible with names Id just tell the person that. "Im sorry, and its nothing personal, but Im terrible with names, and Ive completely forgotten yours." Its honest and it reassures them that you arent trying to be rude.

Or you could ask someone you know who knows them to refresh your memory as to what their name is, like I do. :o

I'm usually good with names except when I'm introduced to a whole bunch of new people at once. I have a stupid trick for it, but it usually works. I'll usually remember their name in my head if I attribute it to an actor or fictional character of the same name. Example: If I meet someone named Tom, I'll think of Tom Hanks to remember his name. If I meet someone named Sarah, I'll think of Sarah Connor. I'll only do it until I know their name by heart, but it's worked for me somehow.

I think it depends on the person and how long you have known them for. Otherwise, yes, honesty is the best policy.

I can't remember names for the life of me. If I don't see the person on the regular, chances are I will forget by the next day.

Using the wrong name is rather annoying.
Saying you forgot the name is ok.

I'm have a **** memory for names so I just never use them. I say hi and talk but have no idea what to call them. Sometimes I forget the names of my nephews and I see them every week. To be fair though, there's four of them and they're almost the same size.

Everyone else though I am **** at remembering names. I've known some people ten years and still can't remember their names.

So yeah, for me I find it crazy rude but I cannot use peoples names.

Add them and talk to them online, that should help you remember their names.

I don't know their names on the first place. Jeez Aziz. :o
