Ok after falling in love with the xmen cartoon, movies, i decided im going to start reading comics or at least marvel/dc comics cause i read the ocassional dark horse star wars comics. But I was wondering what is a good series to start in that isnt to far ahead to catch up in. I was mainly looking for marvel comics though. Suggestions please.

Hmm....well any of them can be caught up in with research.

For me Astonishing X-Men was easy. I picked up #13 and 14 and started reading. :)

As for DC..Practically any DC book can be started right now and you'll have like hardly any catching up to do.

For DC, picking up 52 is a must. It comes out once a week, and we're already three issues in. Really helps set up the changes in the DCU after recent events.

Ultimate Spiderman. Everyone on these boards hates Bendis but you should give it a chance.

Iron Man is currently at issue #8 only, and is just in the process of a new arc. You could try looking into the series, and same would go for Moon Knight which debuted in April and is at issue #2.

For DC, there's a new Blue Beetle series which isn't off to a bad start, along with Checkmate. Alot of books are getting relaunched such as The Flash and JLA. Flash is due for June, with JLA in July.

as far as Marvel goes, I would recommend the THing, but its getting ready to die, so that might be a bad idea. X-Factor isn't too far in. Runaways is an excellent series as most anyone will attest. Bendis does do his best work on his Ultimate Spider-Man title, and it wouldn't be too god-awful hard to catch up on that. luckily most comics these days have a catch up page at the beginning to fill you in on whats been going on in this arch.

as a few questions around the hype and we can either fill you in or link you somewhere where you can get filled in. I can't tell you anything about the DC universe because I am stubbornly and admittedly stupidly sticking to Marvel only for my reading material out of an idiotic sense of loyalty.

glad to hear you've taken up the interest, BB. We have an Official Recommendations Thread here that I think should give you a world of help
http://superherohype.com/forums/showthread.php?t=186190

For Marvel, I would fully recommend Runaways, Young Avengers, Astonishing X-Men, or anything Ultimate to you. From other publishers, Invincible is easily the best superhero comic around hands down.

there's also lots of non-superhero books, most of them for mature readers, that are doing just some incredible things. The thread linked to above has summaries and sample art for dozens of them, good luck!
