so i am a huge fan of marvel cartoons and live action movies and now i want to read the comics. for the most part i do not want to read comics that are too old/inconsequential to the modern spider-man comics, though i am not sure how to quantify what to old is since i know pretty much nothing about comics!

i know spider-man is relatively old and vast but he is my favorite stand alone superhero of all, what issue/series do i need to read in order to catch up with the most modern incarnation of spider-man comics and have all of the necessary knowledge to continue reading spider-man for the foreseeable future?

from seeing the various incarnations of characters in the different spider-man movies and cartoons (mostly the marvel's ultimate spider-man but also some older series), along with reading snippets of comic book info on different wikis/articles over the years, there are a few characters i would like to specifically learn and read about!

so just in case they are not in the main comics i have to read in order to catch up with modern spider-man comics, what do i have to read in order to learn more about agent venom, the iron spider, the scarlet spider, carnage and spider girl/spider woman.

i also know from the ultimate spider-man that spider-man worked with a group called the new warriors including but not limited to power-man, iron fist, white tiger and nova. sticking to the same idea as with spider-man where i only want to read relevant comics that can get me to the most modern form of each character, so what issues should i start with?

i think that is it for now because it will probably take many years and much money to acquire and read all of this material!

Yeah, there's a lot to dive into there from a lot of different sources. Modern Spider-Man is Dan Slott's run, which I think has been positively received, but there has certainly been valid criticism. I suppose you could start at the beginning of that or you could start post-Superior Spider-Man.

Agent Venom, Iron Spider, Scarlet Spider, Carnage:
Uh, there's gonna be a lot of 90s crap there. Iron Spider is from Civil War, though. That's relatively straight forward:
Amazing Spider-Man 529-531
Civil War: Opening Shot
Civil War 1
Amazing Spider-Man 532
Civil War 2
Amazing Spider-Man 533
Civil War 3
Civil War 4
Amazing Spider-Man 534-535
Civil War 5
Amazing Spider-Man 536-537
Civil War 6
Civil War 7
Amazing Spider-Man 538-539

It's during JMS's run of Amazing Spider-Man so there's presumably a lot of things going on you wouldn't know, but I didn't know about it and got on just fine. You'll have Mary Jane and Peter being married (something that gets reset later), but you'd also have that for a lot of the 90s stuff.

If you're asking for Scarlet Spider stuff, it seems like you want the Clone Saga. Carnage comes before that. I bet Agent Venom (the Flash Thompson Venom) is probably just fine starting where it is. Maybe read ASM 300 (and a couple issues that lead up to it to just get a sense of the character).

Which Spider-Woman? Jessica Drew, Julia Carpenter?

so from wikipedia i see that there is an agent venom comic book series that started in 2011, what do i need to read prior to that so i can fully understand it? and can you be a bit more specific about the different spider-man series?

i did not know that there were different spider women...

The Amazing Spider-Man is the main book. Some of that 90s stuff I mentioned would probably require some of the others (the other main book was Spectacular Spider-Man). These days, I think you can stick with Amazing. I was just pointing out that, briefly, Spider-Man switched bodies with Dr. Octopus and the series was renamed The Superior Spider-Man.

As for Venom:
The black suit Spider-Man first appears in Amazing Spider-Man 252. Someone else will hopefully be able to clue you in on any relevant storylines during that time, although The Amazing Spider-Man 258 seems like a good one. Then I would read Web of Spider-Man 1. You might want to read Web of Spider-Man 18 and 24, but I think you'll be fine without them. I would definitely read Amazing Spider-Man 298-300.

The problem is you want Agent Venom, not the original Venom. That means you not only need to understand the Symbiote, but Flash Thompson (the Venom in the stories I recommended is Eddie Brock). Flash Thompson was Peter Parker's High School bully. He featured significantly in early stories. I haven't the time or background knowledge to tell you which stories are important. The cliffnotes are that the two characters eventually stop hating each other, Flash goes to Vietnam where he loses the use of his legs, and then the events of Agent Venom pick up. I think you can read the series without truly knowing more about Flash Thompson, but I suspect it adds a little more to it. A quick search says you should start with The Amazing Spider-Man 654.

Carnage starts in Amazing Spider-Man 344-345. 361-363 is the first time Venom turns good (to my knowledge). Might be worth including.

As for Spider-Woman:
There's Jessica Drew, Julia Carpenter and Mattie Franklin. There's also Spider-Gwen who is Gwen Stacey and Spider-Girl who is May Parker (not that May Parker). Then there's Arana (Anya Corazon) who is sometimes referred to as Spider-Girl.
