Who is Fanboy?

That's actually one of the more level-headed and fair articles I've seen written on the matter. They touched on how crazy we can get over source material, devotion to things we perceive 'done right', as well as our own inability to be satisfied at times, despite what seem like made concessions. Although, I don't think it's as hard to narrow down what would be popular in this community as the article points to.

There's good reason to court — and fear — the elusive demographic. While their full numbers remain unclear, Internet and comic devotees can add $25 million to $50 million to a movie's box office take, according to some estimates
That was a bit surprising. Not that I ever tried to estimate box office pull, but that's fairly significant.

Fanboy, says Fantastic Four star Jessica Alba, is a little like pornography. You can't define him, but you know him when you see him.

lol

The article is pretty cool. I can't wait to see that Fanboy movie. Should be hilarious.

You're right that does seem pretty significant.

When you think about it, $25-$50 mill could be anywhere between 8% & 30% of the movie's take depending on the budget.

JAL saw FF and FF:ROTSS, respectively, like, 12 times in the theatre.

How many JALs do you think are out there?

Okay, JALish fanboys?

A lot.

=

A lot of money.

"Well, I'm not Fanboy," Alba says. "But he's saved a couple of my movies. So whoever he is, I'm glad he's out there."
Okay, Seriously, I'd pound this little twig like a blacksmith's hammer on metal.
His tastes can be obscure. "You know the movie they quote me most often?" says Matt Damon. "Not the Bourne movies. Not Oceans. But Rounders. I can't figure it out."
Matt's got it more figured out than he knows. Truth is, we don't like to fit into mainstream, we like our jokes kept inside.

Damn straight, and just like pornography, you secretly love the feck out of us.

"A fanboy doesn't ask me for a picture or for a date," Alba says. "He wants to know what it's like to meet Victor Von Doom. It's a little strange, but cute."
LOL, Jess is outsmarting herself. Believe me sweety we want way more than a date, but we are realistic enough to know all we're getting is the fantasy.

Does seeing SM3 5 times make me a fanboy?

Who am I kidding, being on this site is enough of an indicator.

I remember talking about the potential of something like this happening within the next ten years, back when this site was called Spider-Man Hype

history is moving faster than I had expected

and yes, the article is quite engaging

I sincerely doubt we add that much to a box office take, though. Repeat viewings or not.

Great article! I finally got around to reading it while I ate lunch. All I have to say is "dammit if Hollywood movie studios don't have some of the STUPIDEST people!?"

No kidding they should follow the forums! Because we actually have TASTE for pop culture and it's juices, and all they want to do is make profits on movies.....Muthah F3@ks!

And while it was cool to see CS.net on there, you gotta be kidding me!? SHH pulls WAY more traffic on a regular basis. And while a strong % of that goes in every which way, there's still a LOT to learn from the people, er, fanboys on here!

its pretty ******ed of the studio execs not to realize all we want is a good quality film thats appropriately true to its source material. theres not much of a mystery to it.

It's kinda funny that their demographic of the typical fanboy matches that of the average serial killer......heh.....whOOps! :)

That $50 million box office accounts for only admitted fanboys. There are also plenty of fanboys and fangirls "in the closet" so to speak.

It's probably higher.

The average ticket price is 5 bucks. So that would suggest there's 10 million fanboys. But when you add in multiple viewings there wouldn't need to be 10 million fanboy and girls to get 50 million. Maybe 7 million fanboy and girls.

You think less than 3% of the US population are geeks and nerds?

It's gotta be somewhere around 20% at least.
